A MINUTE WITH DR. MAXWELL
Happy May East Families,
As the flowers begin to bloom and the air begins to warm in May, our thoughts drift towards summer and all of the fun activities that we have planned. I encourage all of our students to enjoy their time off, but to continue learning for fun outside of school. There are many ways to engage your child in learning that make it fun.
The first way to help support your child’s summer learning is to sign them up for summer school. This is a free program that only requires parents to provide transportation. Sessions will be held at East Elementary from June 4-25. Students will be actively learning, but in an enjoyable environment. For more information or an enrollment sheet, please contact our office at 243-5271.
Another way to maintain and continue learning is to read over the summer. We suggest visiting the library with your child to inquire about summer reading programs designed to motivate readers. You may also take a break from the hot summer days and check out a local bookstore. For technology savvy students, you may have them play learning games on electronic devices or PCs. Simple flash cards can be an easy way to review math facts as well!
In an effort to maintain balanced classrooms, we will be using all available resources, including current and previous teachers’ input, to evenly balance classes. As a parent, should you have any specific educational information you feel we will need to ensure a good placement, please feel free to contact me during the month of May. During the summer months, all principals will be collating all class lists.
In early August, students’ placement will be considered finalized and class lists will be sent by email to parents on August 8. Thank you for your understanding and patience.
The fourth year at East Elementary has been a fabulous one. It has been a joy serving you and your children. Thank you for your continuous support to East Elementary and Jackson R2 School District.
Jessica Maxwell, Principal
Happy Summer!
MRS. CRIDDLE'S CORNER
What a fabulous year we have had at East Elementary!!! The year truly has flown by. We have such an amazing group of teachers, staff, students, and parents. Thank you to everyone for making East Elementary such an incredible place to be.
MAP testing for 3rd-4th graders will be May 6th-10th. To help ensure your child is prepared to take their test, please make sure they do the following things:
Go to bed at a reasonable time so they are well-rested.
Eat breakfast.
If they are in 4th grade, make sure their Chromebooks are charged and ready to go.
Thanks for an awesome year!
Shauna Criddle, Assistant Prinicipal
MRS. MOYERS' MESSAGE
As we wrap up this school year, my hope for all of my students is that they will take what we’ve learned throughout the year and remember that they are in control of their emotions, choices, and behaviors. Being able to recognize if they are in their upstairs or downstairs brain, knowing how to verbalize how they are feeling, and knowing whether they can manage their feelings on their own or if they need help are all skills that are essential to their mental and emotional well-being. This year, we have also focused a lot on T.R.I.B.E. - Trust, Respect, Integrity, Belonging, and Empathy. I also hope that they will remember what they have learned about each of these and put into practice the choices and behaviors that will help them to put each of these into action even when they are out of the walls of East Elementary.
While I want students to be successful academically, I’ve learned that mental and emotional well-being directly affects academic success. I also know that the skills we have learned this year will be able to help them achieve great personal and career success in the future. If there is ever anything I can do for your student, please don’t hesitate to let me know! I hope you and your family have a great summer!
News From The Art Department
As the school year draws to an end, I want to thank you for your support of our Arts Department! Our Art show was a huge success raising over $800 for our students!! How cool is that!? If you missed out on it, be sure to check it out next year. Student's artwork was on display in the East Elementary Cafeteria. Parents were able to purchase the art matted and framed that night, and take it home with them for $25. If you did not purchase your child's artwork, look for it to come home around the beginning of May.
In addition, our Artsonia fundraiser (for online purchases of your students artwork all school year) has raised over $1,000 this year. You guys are amazing!! With Mother's Day and Father's Day just around the corner, make sure to check it out for some awesome gift ideas. Remember, 15% of what you spend on the site comes back to our school. Thank you again for your support! Have a great Summer!!

NEWS FROM THE NURSES
Happy May!!!
Just a reminder that if your child has medication in the nurse's office (Tylenol, Motrin, ADHD medication, asthma medication, epi-pens, etc) you will need to pick those up on the last day of school. We will send home a letter a week before if you do! You will also have the choice if it is Tylenol/Motrin/Asthma medication/Epi-pens with an expiration date that would work for next year to leave it in the nurse's office for 2018-2019 (that will be on the letter as well). However, ADHD/controlled substance medication MUST be picked up from the nurse's office by an adult (any ADHD medication left will be destroyed May 24 at 3pm).
Asthma medication, Diastat, and Epi-Pens can be sent home with your child on the bus on the last day if you indicate this option on the letter (these are the only medications that are allowed on the bus).
****IMPORTANT NOTE FOR SUMMER SCHOOL STUDENTS****If your child will be at East for summer school you will need to drop off medication and fill out another medication form with the summer school nurse on the first day of summer school. You will also need to fill out paperwork with the summer school nurse if your child has any food allergies, asthma, seizures, diabetes, etc. We do not relay any information to the summer school nurse!

LANGUAGE ACTIVITIES FOR SUMMER
1. Compare big and small objects. “Compared to you, is a tiger big or small?”
2. Take a talk-walk. Describe and tell all you know about what you see – in short, easy to understand sentences. “I see a tree. It has a rough, brown trunk covered with bark. The tree has green leaves.”
3. Look through your child’s story books for some good action pictures. Have your child describe what he/she sees, who is in the picture, what they are doing, what may happen next, etc.
4. Let your child help with household tasks, talking your way through the task. For example: “To set the table we need plates, cups, forks, spoons, and knives….”
Let your child help you sort and categorize common objects. For example, folding and putting away laundry. “Socks go in this drawer, pants go in this drawer.”
POSSIBLE SUMMER EXPERIENCES FOR LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT
These are just a few of the many summer activities in which you and your child can participate to provide opportunities for language enrichment. Use these activities to talk about what you are doing, discuss new vocabulary, describe items, use positional concepts, answer questions, etc.
1. Go swimming
2. Play baseball (or another game)
3. Go to a carnival or fair
4. Camp out in the backyard
5. Roast hot dogs or marshmallows
6. Go on a Picnic
7. Cook outside on a grill
8. Pick berries, etc.
9. Go on a hike
10. Play in a sandbox
