Week of Jan. 7
Welcome Back
Our hearts were once again warm and full with the return of all San Marcos CISD students on Tuesday, January 7! As the chill settled in, the Texans of Travis Elementary embraced the winter vibes with creativity during their library specials! After a snow-tastic story time, each student designed their very own unique snowflake patterns. Welcome back to all Rattlers – let's wrap up the academic year with a strong second semester!
Unleashing Rattler Strength
San Marcos Athletics hosted a successful Rattler Invitational powerlifting meet on Friday, January 10. Our student-athletes recently took to the platform, showcasing their strength, determination, and hard-earned skills. With each lift, they not only demonstrated their physical prowess but also the mental toughness that comes from months of training and preparation. From the first squat to the final deadlift, they pushed themselves to new personal bests, all while supporting one another along the way. A huge thank you to our dedicated coaching staff, David-Ryan Sambrano, Kristal Haralson and all of our amazing volunteers who made the event possible.
New Beginnings in Business
On Friday, January 11, the San Marcos High School DECA Chapter competed at the district competition held at McNeil High School. DECA is a highly competitive business club that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management. Although none of our members qualified for the state competition, the first-year SMHS chapter, was honored to receive the New Chapter of the Year Award. We are excited about the future and continued success DECA has and we look forward to continued growth in the coming years. Six of our SMHS student members — Krishna Patel, Diego Vacaflores, Eben Smith, Geronimo Vacaflores, Eleanor Smith, and Kevin Vacaflores — participated, along with our club advisor, Owen McGlothlin. Congratulations to these individuals on embarking on a new endeavor and forging a way for future aspiring Rattler business men and women!
From Senior Night to Service: Wrestlers Prepare for Military Careers
Our Rattler Wrestling program held their Senior Night on Wednesday, Jan. 8. The heartfelt celebration highlighted the dedication, hard work, and sacrifices made by the four student-athletes and their loved ones throughout their high school careers. As the team gathered one last time on the mat, teammates, coaches, and families reflected on their journey—highlighting victories, challenges, and growth both on and off the mat.
Among the four is a group of future military personnel: Travis Rodriguez, Roy Tobias, Robert Gabrian and Mathew Martinez. Best of luck to all four young men in the Class of 2025 wrestlers as they embark on their post-secondary journeys!

Round 2 of District Play
The SMHS Rattler basketball programs are hitting their stride as they enter mid-district play, showcasing impressive teamwork, skill, and determination on the court. With a strong start to the season, they’ve each faced tough competition but continue to rise to the challenge, proving themselves as a force to be reckoned with. As they move forward in the district standings, both Rattler basketball programs remain focused and will pick back up on Friday, January 17 – Boys in the Snake Pit and Girls are on the road.
