In Math, students use the Open Up curriculum. Click here to see the Open Up lessons for all grade levels! Click here to see the Math 1 Open Up lessons. 6th graders are exploring rational numbers; 7th graders students are working with probability; and 8th grade working on exponents and scientific notation.
In ELA, students are in their last unit of text studies. 6th grade is reading Hidden Figures, 7th is exploring texts from the Harlem Renaissance, and 8th is reading Maus.
In Social Studies, 6th graders are learning about the Islamic Empire, 7th grade is learning about the Cold War, and 8th grade is exploring the mid 20th century.

Math Moments
6th Grade
In 6th grade, students are practicing with positive and negative numbers. Decide which of the following quantities can be represented by a positive number and which can be represented by a negative number. Give an example of a quantity with the opposite sign in the same situation.
- Tyler’s puppy gained 5 pounds.
- The aquarium leaked 2 gallons of water.
- Andre received a gift of $10.
- Kiran gave a gift of $10.
- A climber descended 550 feet.
7th Grade
In 7th grade, students are working with sampling and probability. They conducted several experiments this week. See if they can apply that knowledge to this word problem. Lin is interested in how many of her classmates watch her favorite TV show, so she starts asking around at lunch. She gets the responses in the chart. If she asks one more person randomly in the cafeteria, do you think they will say “yes” or “no”? Explain your reasoning.
.
8th Grade
In 8th grade, students are learning about exponents and powers of 10. Scientific notation is a way to write very large or very small numbers. We write these numbers by multiplying a number between 1 and 10 by a power of 10. For example, the number 425,000,000 in scientific notation is 4.25 x 10^8.
Write each number in scientific notation.
- 14,700
- 0.00083
- 760,000,000
- 0.038
- 0.38
