Eagle Family Connection #14
December 1-6, 2024
Update #14 - December 1 - 6, 2024
Hello Wilkesboro families! Here are updates for the week of December 1-6. You can visit your teacher’s page by clicking on the link below.
We hope that your family had a wonderful, safe Thanksgiving holiday. We are excited to welcome all students back to school tomorrow for two and a half busy weeks leading up to the winter holiday. Car line will begin at 7:25, and buses will run their usual routes. We have been planning for your return, and we will make the most of these days.
We want to share a few seasonal reminders. After lots of illness in November, we want to remind you to send in written notes when students return. Also, please remember we follow strict protocols regarding pick ups from the school office, so please remind visitors to bring a car tag or ID when picking up students. Please note the weather has also turned colder, so make sure to write your child’s name in their jackets or hoodies. We have lots remaining in the lost and found if your child has missing gear.
We want to thank you for your overwhelming generosity to our PTO’s fundraising campaign which raised just over $13,000. Thanks to your generosity, some bathroom updates are already taking place in building 2. We will share final totals, name the winning class and top fundraisers, and draw for individual winners on Friday. Please send in any remaining donation envelopes tomorrow. Work is already getting started, and we are appreciative of everyone’s efforts to support our school. Our school community is blessed to have such supportive parents, families, neighbors, and businesses.
On Wednesday, your child will receive a progress report. Please review this report, talk with your child about their growth, return the signed report to school, and reach out to your teacher with questions. This report may be accompanied with supplemental parent reports regarding check ins for 3rd-5th grades.
On Thursday, our 2nd and 3rd graders will travel to the JAWCC for a field trip.
On Thursday, December 5, we are excited to welcome families for our PTO Art Celebration Night. We have art on display across the school, and our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students will sing in the gym. Please see your child’s folder tomorrow for full details.
On Friday, we have some fun school-wide events planned. On Friday, everyone is invited to wear pajamas and enjoy decking the halls at school. Please make sure your child wears appropriate shoes as we’ll follow normal routines.
Friday is also the fourth turn in deadline for field trip payments for the 6-installment plan. If you chose to make six $10 payments, the December $10 payment is due on Friday (4 of 6). If you chose to make two $30 payments, the final $30 payment is due on Friday. You can pay online using the link at the top of our Eagle Connection page, or you can send the payments in your child’s green folder. On Saturday, you can support our school by dining at Glenn’s restaurant between 8:00 - 3:00. Mention WES when ordering for dine in or take out and a portion of sales will be donated to our school.
We want to thank you for your ongoing support, encouragement and cooperation. We are grateful to our Wilkesboro Elementary family, and we look forward to seeing everyone back at the Nest.
Thanks for Your Generous Support of our School!
We are grateful for the support of our WES PTO, parents and community. Our PTO has big plans for the school year. Past campaigns have funded security cameras, whiteboards in all classrooms, the outdoor classroom, shade structures for playgrounds, security windows for exterior doors, playground equipment and storage for recess, decodable take home readers for K-2 classrooms, trees and landscaping, and school wide events. This year’s campaign hopes to raise funds to install additional interior and exterior security cameras, create a sensory garden in the courtyard, update our in house news system, and provide needed improvements to student restrooms.
WCS Wants Feedback on Title 1 Family & Engagement Policy
WCS is seeking parent input on the WCS Title 1 parent and family engagement policy and plan. WCS shared information previously with parents regarding the district's parent and family involvement plan. You can find that information below.
District Parent Advisory Committee Meeting Presentation
WCS is asking for feedback on the policy through a short feedback form linked below. Please submit and complete feedback form by Friday, December 6, 2024 if you'd like to provide feedback. Thank you for your support of our school and WCS!
4th Graders Lead Operation Christmas Card
Our fourth graders are leading a special project called Operation Christmas Card! Operation Christmas Card is a project to collect holiday cards for the local nursing home residents of Wilkes County. This means that anyone who lives in any of the following nursing facilities will get a special holiday card this year:
- Westwood Hills (about 100 residents)
- Accordious/Ridge Valley (about 103 residents)
- Rose Glenn Manor (about 55 residents)
- Rose Glen Village (about 80 residents)
- Wilkes Rehab & Habilitation (about 113 residents)
- Wilkes Assisted Living (about 92 residents)
Our goal is to make the 550 cards needed to provide every resident in Wilkes with a special card. Fourth graders will be visiting all PK-5th grade classes to encourage each child to make at least one handmade holiday card. Students can make a card, write a note, or even write on a store bought card. We welcome students to make more than one card, and we also welcome staff, parents and family members to contribute to this important project.
Learn More about Field Trips & Pay Online
Field trips are a special part of school. Field trips allow students to experience new environments, learn in unique places, apply skills learned in the classroom, and connect with the real world. We have planned a full year of field trips for students in every grade, and we look forward to meaningful learning in new places!
We've created a dedicated field trip page to share full information about how to pay.
Visit our FIELD TRIP HEADQUARTERS PAGE here.

About Attendance
School starts at 7:50 each day. Students who are participating will be marked PRESENT or ABSENT. If your child is not in school, you will need to send in absence notes the next day and it will be coded as excused or unexcused. Written notes are required and can come directly from the parent/guardian or a medical office. Also note that ClassDojo messages are great for communicating an absence, but they do NOT serve as legal documentation of absences. Please send a written note. Thanks in advance for your help!
After School Care Available
YMCA After School Care Available
You can sign up for the YMCA after school care for the Wilkesboro Elementary site online. Once you are signed up, please communicate with your teacher to let them know your plans.
Also, this year the YMCA classroom will be in building 2. Please park in our back parking lot beside the MEGA Toy playground when coming to pick up your children. Thank you!
Volunteers Needed
We Need Volunteers!
We welcome volunteers to help with school events. WCS uses Volunteer Tracker to help organize this process, and we use Sign Up Genius (shared via email and ClassDojo) to make signing up easy and convenient. To get signed up, follow steps below.
1. Go to www.wilkescountyschools.org
2. Go to the PARENTS tab at the top (or VOLUNTEER at the bottom).
3. Click on VOLUNTEERS.
4. Click on VOLUNTEER TRACKER.
5. Go to the green NEW REGISTRATION and follow instructions from there.
Level 1 volunteers can help in many ways. Level 1 volunteers can sign up to help with book fairs, school events, class parties and projects, Field Day, Fall Festival, and proctoring for tests.
Level 2 volunteers can do all level 1 tasks but can also help chaperone field trips and work more closely with students in small groups. Level 2 volunteers can also sign up for classroom tutoring and assistance, reading buddy program, tutoring, leading after school activities, and chaperoning school events field trips.
We ask that all parents/guardians who plan to attend field trips sign up to be Level 2 volunteers at the start of the year. It takes a few weeks to verify volunteers, and signing up early will make sure that you are approved in time for this year’s events and field trips.
Car Line Helpers Needed!
We are looking for friend, positive people to help on morning carline. If you're interested, please complete this form and we will be in touch. Thanks for considering this volunteer opportunity!
