Dear Families:
We hope you have had a chance to go into ParentVue to check your child's report card as well as check the mid year assessment reports. Our students are working hard and it shows in their progress! Before we know it, students in grades 3-5 will be taking the Virginia state assessments knows as SOLs. These assessments measure what students have learned not only during the current school year, but in prior years as well!
I have completed my LCPS Survey! Have you completed your survey? The survey results are carefully reviewed. Last year we had 116 families respond. We are really hoping for a stronger response rate this year. Last year the survey informed our work for this school year. For example, some parents felt that the curriculum was not challenging enough for their students. As we have increased the rigor in reading and vocabulary, we expect to see higher levels of performance. More students are utilizing IXL in math and in Language Arts. The new Virginia math standards are being implemented at Weller, school wide. Another area of concern that we have addressed is wanting students to have more voice in school. Our School Advisory Committee is being led by our librarian Kadie Jones. The students have helped us make strides in recycling, caring for the outside environment, and we have many other ideas in the proverbial hopper.
So please take the time to respond to the LCPS Family survey.
Every year there are two less than pleasant topics that we need to address. The first one pertains to student property losses. We have had one student's apple watch go missing. We really need students to turn items into the office or into the lost and found when they find things outside or in a restroom, or really anywhere. Sometimes things look like toys, when they are actually not toys!
The other topic is head lice. Yes, it is that time when we need each family to check their children's scalp for head lice. We have events taking place in two different grades. It is important to treat head lice with lice shampoo and to carefully remove all evidence of lice from one's hair. If you have any questions about how to treat your child if he or she has head lice, please contact our school nurse, Sabrina Evangelisti. (571-252-2360)
Our SWES PTO is planning some great events! We have a great team of parents who are involved in every aspect of school! Our March PTO meeting will include guest speakers on Student Mental Health and resources available to families. Mark your calendars for March 21st at 8am.
We will be looking for new board members, so if you are curious about what that might entail, please reach out: info@swespto.com
Have a great weekend!
Respectfully yours,
Julia Burton, Principal

Rising Sixth Grade Event @ Belmont Ridge MS for 2025-26:
We can't believe that the time is nearing when we have to say good-bye to our fifth grade students. In preparation to moving on to sixth grade, Belmont Ridge Middle School has many opportunities for students to become familiar with their new surroundings. "Bridge to the Ridge" is a middle school transition "camp" held on June 23rd and June 24th. It's a two-day program, and families can choose between a morning or afternoon session. Kids learn their way around the middle school, practice opening their lockers, get familiar with scheduling and how middle school life works. This has been a popular program for years and is designed to put kids' minds at ease as they begin their middle school careers. See the flyer attached. (Spanish version) Deadline to enroll is June 14, 2025.
Watchdog Parents:
Watch Dog Parents are welcome at Weller! What is this wonderful program you ask? This is an opportunity for parents to become role models for our students. You will have the opportunity to work with classes, students, and your children's classroom throughout the day. You pick the full day or half day to commit your time working with the Wild Cats. Click here to find out more.
It is important that you provide admin two (2) weeks notice so that they can plan for your visit. All requests to be a Watchdog Parent will be confirmed by admin via email.
