Drills
The health and safety of our students and staff are our top priority. Under the Illinois School Safety Drill Act, all public schools are required to conduct a variety of safety drills annually. Drills practiced include fire, bus evacuation, severe weather/shelter-in-place, and law enforcement (lockdown/active shooter). See below for our current drill schedule:
**Fire Drill with our CLFD (New date)
Thursday, Sept. 19, 2024
Tornado Drill
Thursday, Sept. 19, 2024
Lockdown Drill with our CLPD
Thursday, Sept. 26, 2024
Preparing for various scenarios in advance helps empower staff and students in the case of a real emergency. While the chance of an incident happening is unlikely, we care about the well-being of our students and staff and are required by law to educate our school community to ensure emergency preparedness for all.
As indicated above, our school will participate in a lockdown drill on Thursday, Sept 26. We understand that some drills, particularly the law enforcement/lockdown drill, could cause anxiety for some students. Should you have questions about the lockdown drill or wish to opt your child out of the drill, please fill out and submit this form to your child’s school or contact the main office at 815.356.3451. Under state law, schools must still provide alternative safety education related to an active threat to students who do not participate in the lockdown drill.
Shining a Light on Our Amazing Staff!
We want to give a huge shoutout to some incredible members of our North Elementary family. A heartfelt thank you to our wonderful physical therapist, Mrs. Bright, our dedicated instructional coaches, Mrs. Eltman and Mrs. Nielson, and our amazing interventionist, Mrs. Drechsel. As well as our reading recovery team: Mrs. Keenan, Mrs. Coughlin, Mrs. Wolowiec, and Mrs. Schlesinger. Your hard work, passion, and unwavering dedication to our students make North a truly special place. We see all that you do, and we are so grateful to have you as part of our community.
Thank You!

STAR Reading
We're looking for volunteers to be a part of our STAR reading program, where parents can spend some special time reading one-on-one with their child and other classmates. This is a wonderful way to encourage a love of reading and get involved in the classroom.
If you'd like to volunteer, please fill out this form: NPTO Volunteer Form, and don't forget to look out for grade-specific sign-ups at Parent Night next week. We can't wait to see you there and share more about this fun opportunity!
Garden Club
The Garden Club would like to welcome everyone to join in on the fruits of our labor!!! The next garden meeting will be Tuesday, September 17th at 3:30 pm! The garden is full of tomatoes, pumpkins, flowers, and more! The Garden Club here at North Elementary is an after school program meeting twice a month during the regular growing season. Students need to have an adult present with them when attending though it is led by parent volunteers. The Club meets at the school garden in the courtyard area located on the west side of the building near the fifth-grade playground and off the back end of the school parking lot. Meetings go anywhere from half an hour to an hour depending on the needs at the time. The goal is to give access to any student who would benefit from working in the soil, learning about gardening/farming, having hands-on experience with where food comes from and being outside in our community. Please email us at northgardencl@gmail.com to be added to the email/newsletter list for up-to-date info and directions.
Who Are We?
The NPTO is a non-profit volunteer organization of parents and educators from North Elementary who want to support staff and students at North and continue to build a wonderful place to learn, grow, have fun, and work! We do this by volunteering our time inside and outside of the school building, fundraising, appreciating, supporting, and advocating for our students and staff! Please join us here NPTO Volunteer Form
Our first meeting is September 18th in the LMC at North at 6 pm. More details to come!
