Koch's Corner
November is one of my favorite months of the year with the fall colors and the college football season in full swing! This time of year is also a time that is generally focused on family, gratitude, and caring. We have much to be grateful for here at Leeds Elementary School. We are so very blessed to have a wonderful, caring staff of custodians, paraprofessionals, office staff, teachers, and all of our remaining support staff that play an integral part in helping us reach the goals and vision we have for our school. I am personally so grateful every day for the opportunity to work with all of them and all of the amazing, supportive students, families and friends in our Leeds community.
A couple reminders for you:
· Now is a good time to get out those winters coats and warm clothing to ensure the students are safe and warm as we move into those cold winter months.
· If your child is in need of a coat, mittens, or hat, please contact the office and we will do our best to find them what they need.
· Goodwill is also having their Shoe & Mitten Party. Parents/ Guardians need to fill out the application online or submit a hardcopy to Goodwill before the deadline November 15, 2021.
The first 1,000 applicants will be invited to the party and will receive free shoes and mittens. The event will take place on Saturday December 4, 2021, 9:00am – 2:00pm at Goodwill on 4th street

Winter Is Coming
With the cooler temperatures upon us, please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the colder weather. Even during the winter season, the District allows recess and outdoor activities to continue as usual, so it is important that students have the right winter weather clothing. When the temperature feels like 15 degrees or lower, then students are kept inside for recess and activities. Students should be prepared for the cooler weather with a warm coat, hat, scarf, and gloves. If your student does not have access to cold weather apparel, please contact our school office.
Please remember that parents and guardians have the right to make the decision to keep their child home on any day they feel it is unsafe for their student to be in school because of weather conditions. If you believe the weather provides a sincere reason why you may have to keep your student at home, or take your student home when classes are scheduled to continue, you as a parent or guardian will simply need to contact our school office to let us know.

We encourage you to stay up-to-date on school news, highlights, and student recognition by following our school on Facebook and Twitter as well as the District’s Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram channels. It is one of the best ways to stay engaged with our school and the District. Follow us today!
School Closure Information
The weather in Iowa can be unpredictable. If the weather requires us to delay the start of our school day, cancel school for the day, or dismiss school early, information will be sent to families through Blackboard, our communication system. In addition, this information is posted to our social media sites and the District website.
Free and Reduced Meal Application Reminder:
- Have you filled out a free and reduced meal application for the 2021-2022 school year? If you haven’t, please take a few moments to fill out the application today. While meals are free to all students due to the pandemic, the information collected on the free and reduced meal application is needed for program funding within the District. Families who qualify for free or reduced meals may also qualify for P-EBT benefits. P-EBT benefits carry over for 30 days in the school year or until a new application is filled out for the new school year. The free and reduced meal application is available on the SCCSD website.

Communication and Preparedness
Student and staff safety is of paramount importance in the Sioux City Community School District. For this reason, the District exercises a host of crisis prevention and planning tactics. Should an emergency occur, the school notifies you through our Blackboard phone system. In an emergency, the system calls every phone number associated with your child in order to reach you. The message will give you details about the emergency and provide directions on when/where to pick up your child if the normal school day is altered. Learn more about school safety.
