Career Fair Report
I toured this year's Career Fair at the Classic Center, and wow, it was amazing! The space was packed with all sorts of businesses and organizations hoping to recruit our students. There was something for everyone. I walked past booths for:
- The Carter Center and other non-profits from the whole spectrum of the non-profit world
- Food producers and distributors such as Hershey's, Zaxby's, Aldi, Dollar General, and Ernest and Julio Gallow wines
- The Secret Service, military branches, and smaller police precincts from all over the country
- Tech companies or all sorts
- School districts from all over the country
- Construction firms, property management, and real estate companies
- Banks, mortgage companies, and investment firms
- Health care companies and providers of all kinds
- And many, many more!
In addition, there was an area for students to collect themselves, practice their elevator speech with a Career Consultant, and with a map of all participants in hand figure out their strategy for the event. I highly recommend letting your students know about the Majors Fairs. It's like a great opportunity to connect with employers in a supportive environment!
Please contact me at mjenn@uga.edu if you have suggestions or if there is anything you'd like me to include in the digest.
For Advisors
Important Information and Action Items for Advisors
Reminder to Place No-Show Flags
Please make sure to use the No-Show flag on your students who no-show. It will help our assessment efforts tremendously this semester.
Chinese and Korean Language Proficiency
- Any student who needs to be evaluated for proficiency in Chinese or Korean should be referred to Dr. Mori (mamo@uga.edu), who will in turn refer the student to the correct evaluator.
Experiential Learning (EL) Internship Program
The EL Internship Program, headed by Karen Saunders, is a newly approved EL activity for Franklin College majors as of spring 2020. Students do not need to go through Dr. Kagel in the Dean's Office for approval. Currently, the EL Office can only accept 25 students per semester, so interested students should reach out to them early.
Students who wish to participate in the program need to do the following:
find the internship (keeping in mind that not all companies are willing to participate in this program)
demonstrate that the internship is a good fit with their major
complete a “course” of modules in addition to the internship itself
apply through the Experiential Learning Office well ahead of the start of the internship
sign an MOU for each internship
The EL Office will be launching a new website soon that will contain resources on how the program will work.
Upcoming Meetings
Wednesday, February 5th, 11:00 am - 12:00 pm, OAA Meeting - Biology & Psychology Training, 348 Brooks
Information for Advisors
Minors and the Residency Requirement (with thanks to Morgan!)
- Not all UGA minors require UGA courses to fulfill the minor requirements. The Bulletin states, "The department shall make available to students the requirements for the minor--the total number of hours required, along with the enumeration of any particular courses that are mandated or excluded, residency requirements (if any) for the minor courses."
- If a student is interested in a minor, check the Bulletin entry for that minor and see what specific residency requirements exist, if any.
Do You Have a Student Interested in Intended-Business?
- All students interested in switching to an intended-business major must attend an info session at the Exploratory Center. (See additional information below.)
- The attached cards provide students with information about how to sign up for the sessions, so please pass them along to prospective Terry students.

Exploratory Center Updates
The Exploratory Center has *new* programming this semester to assist non-Honors students who are exploring majors and those who need a primary advisor within the EC! Please see our EC website for informational flyers, links and details. The bullet points below should provide advisors with a quick guide to the changes we’ve made for Spring 2020:
Summary: All three areas of the EC (Intended Terry, Intended Grady, and Undecided/Exploring) are now offering information sessions for students new to the EC. Primary advisor assignments are made following info sessions if a student feels confident in declaring one of our majors or becoming an Exploring student.
Undecided/Exploring students:
Explore Hours (for drop-in visits) have been replaced by Explore Information Sessions (which require registration) for students who want to begin a major exploration process in the EC
Students considering Intended Terry majors:
Intended Business Information Sessions for recent major changers or students considering business majors will continue and also require registration
Students considering Intended Grady majors:
2 options:
Prospective Grady majors (i.e., considering Grady but not ready to declare) may contact Gradyprospective@uga.edu to connect with Grady’s Prospective Student Advisor
