I'm currently reading 'The Blue Sisters' by Coco Mellors, which explores topics I've been gravitating towards recently: grief after the loss of a family member, coping mechanisms (which often lead to self-medicating,) and family addiction. I don't know if it's the holiday season or the fact that several family members have passed away unexpectedly in the last few months, but I want to read about the sad bits of life and Mellors is delivering so far.

To encourage a sense of community and creativity, our library is holding a community quilt project. The blocks will be assembled into a finished quilt that will be auctioned off in the Spring/Summer of 2025. The proceeds from the auction will benefit future programming at the Vinton Public Library. We hope the project appeals to beginning quilters, experienced quilters, and everyone in between. Thank you for supporting our library!

National Puzzle Day is January 29th, 2025, and we're celebrating with a puzzle swap! Between January 10th and January 22nd, drop off your puzzle and pick up one in exchange! Puzzles must be clean, in like-new condition, with all pieces included. Puzzles for all ages and difficulty levels welcome!

This weekend's icy weather gave me the opportunity to work on one of my favorite holiday traditions with my kids, baking and decorating a gingerbread house! We have entered the library contest several times over the years, and this is our first entry during my time as Library Director!

Our contest runs through this Friday, December 20th. Stop in with an entry of your own, or to enjoy looking at all of the entries! It's a beautiful, creative and fun way to make memories that last a lifetime 💓

It's always a fun learning experience when ISU Extension Benton County visits us! Last Friday, youth discussed ways to give and share. They each got to make their own 'Gift in a Jar' to give to someone.

Check out this gorgeous puzzle completed right here in our library! Thanks to the generous donations of several local individuals, we added a puzzle table and chairs to our library in 2023. We always have a new puzzle going; stop in today!

During today's Memory Cafe, we discussed the value of trying new hobbies; we explored beginning drawing techniques, all while enjoying coffee, freshly baked cookies, and dementia-friendly conversation. Our Memory Cafe is for individuals living with dementia and their caregivers, and we meet on the 2nd and 4th Friday of every month from 10-11:30am in the library boardroom. Help us spread the word on the VPL Memory Cafe today!
