Cougar News - Week of 1/22/24
Letter from Ms. Bedford
Hello Smallville,
I hope you had an amazing week! This week we were able to work through our heating challenges and we ended the week with a much warmer campus. I again would like to thank you for your continued support and willingness to donate your time and resources when we face difficult situations. This type of support is what makes Small such a special place. I know that when challenges do arise we as a campus are never alone!
On a much lighter note, Iām so excited about the enthusiasm our Cougars are showing at the start of this spring semester. They arrived back in the building ready to go and I know that this will be a rewarding time of year for learning, growing, and exploring.
We are already in the beginning stages of planning for the ā24-ā25 school year. Our counseling team is preparing to visit classes to present choice sheets, they are also visiting our feeder elementary campuses to present our course offerings. This will be a busy time for our counseling team, and they are anticipating an increase in questions and inquiries regarding scheduling. This increase may cause a slight delay in response time from our team, but please know that we are diligently working to get to every email, meeting request, and phone call in a timely manner.
Our spring sports, Boys Basketball and Girls Soccer, have kicked off, so please join us in supporting our Cougar athletes as they take the court and field this season. As always, I hope you have an amazing weekend! See you on Monday!
Stay Present Cougars,
Bedford

Future Austin High Maroons:
If you are planning to attend Austin High School as a 9th grader next year, it is time to complete the Academy Preference Survey so your academy can be selected through the lottery process. Please complete this google form by February 6, 2024.
You can read more about the academy model at Austin High by visiting their website and exploring Academy Overview Information.
All future Maroons who live in the AHS attendance zone must complete the google form to rank your academy choices: Academy Preference Survey.
We work very hard to honor student choice and place students in their 1st or 2nd choice academy, but you DO have to submit your Academy Preference Survey by the Feb. 6 deadline.
If you live outside the Austin High attendance area, please have your parents/guardians complete the Enroll Austin tile in the parent portal, rank Austin High as your top choice, and then complete the Academy Preference Survey/Curriculum Transfer Application. Students who do not complete this application will not be considered eligible for a curriculum transfer to Austin High School.
String Camp for Beginners, and Everybody Else!
When: January 20, 2024, 9 am to 2 pm, concert at 1:30 pm
Where: Austin High School, Orchestra Room
Cost: $30, lunch and snack provided
Registration: https://austinhighorchestra.com/camps-trips/winter-camp/
Does your student love music? Are they a beginner musician, or maybe they've never played a stringed instrument? If you think they might want to join an Orchestra program in middle school, this is the camp for them!
This one-day Winter String Camp, led by the two amazing orchestra directors of Small and O. Henry, lets students try out different instruments, learn simple music, and even perform in a mini-concert at the end of the day. It's a wonderful introduction to the joys of being part of an orchestra community. The cost is just $30 to cover expenses.
