Short Avenue IB Learners Strive to Be...
Mr. Lamb's Updates
Happy Weekend Short Avenue Families and Friends!
Week one is in the books! A week ago we were filled with nervousness about the coming school year and now we are seasoned veterans. My team and our students are learning new routines and getting to know each other and learning is already evident.
Monday was a surprise with an earthquake at lunch. While we were all safe, and most did not even notice, it is a solemn reminder that these types of events do happen and do happen without warning. Please make sure you are prepared at home with extra water and fresh batteries for flashlights. We will continue to be prepared at school too - we are checking our own emergency supplies and are conducting drills so that we know what to do and where to go. Friday we practiced a fire drill. This coming Thursday we will practice an earthquake drill with stopping, dropping, and covering. Drills for each are being scheduled monthly. If you know your child can be anxious please front load that this is just practice and learning. We are safe and we are working to stay safe.
As we push deeper into the year we will continue to monitor our systems and practices with an eye to improving and creating better efficiency. For dismissal at our 2nd - 5th grade gate on Beethoven, near Short Ave, I remind all that we cannot double park and block the street. It is a wonderful moment of modeling responsible behavior when we park down the block and take the extra moments of walking a little to be as safe as possible. Please make safety the priority over convenience.
Finally, please know that we are working to improve our website so that it becomes a useful tool for our community. For example, in addition to reminders on Class DoJo, there is now a calendar of events that is accessible on the website. If you have any suggestions for other information that can be shared or ways to make the site more efficient or a better resource please let us know.
It has been a warm couple of days so please stay hydrated, please stay safe, and please enjoy the rest of your weekend.
See you Monday!
Mr. Lamb

DOLPHIN DISCOVERY CLUB _ FOSA AFTERSCHOOL ENRICHMENT CLASS
FoSA is launching the Dolphin Discovery Club! This fall the after school enrichment classes will begin the week of September 2nd and end the week of December 2nd - except for Monday classes, which will begin September 9th and end on December 9th. We are offering classes through Got Game, ReDiscover, Chess Wizards, and Santa Monica Playhouse. Additionally, there are also a few classes offered by Short Avenue teachers and staff. Please see the schedule of classes in the table below. Registration will open Saturday, August 24th at 9:00am.
To help streamline the Dolphin Discovery Club’s registration process and communication throughout the semester, FoSA has subscribed to the Jumbula platform. This means that you will be able to register for all enrichment classes through one website. Additionally, we will now be able to offer a monthly payment option.
We will send out instructions Wednesday with how to create a family account on our Jumbula page BEFORE registration opens next Saturday. We encourage all families to create an account before registration to help make the registration process more efficient. Also, prior to registration, you will be able to review the details for each class, such as class descriptions, time, location and in some instances, pictures. This way you will know which classes you want when registration opens.
In the chart below, you can see the class names, location, the grade levels eligible for each class and its price. Also, the number in parenthesis is the maximum number of students for that class. We have increased the capacity for the program to over 100 slots on Monday through Thursday. Please note that we have limited options for TK students in the fall, but there will be more options for TK in the spring.
