Welcoming Back the Waco Veterans
PTSD Can Affect You or Me - By Group 10
The Issue
This website is for Veterans that suffer from PTSD, or post traumatic stress disorder. Our website provides information about PTSD and different ways that you can receive help. But don't worry, you're not alone! There are other Veterans from around this area of Waco that you can meet that are dealing with the same problems you are. PTSD is a serious anxiety disorder that can occur in anybody, but is twice as likely to occur in women than in men. People with PTSD most likely got the disease because of war, physical, mental, or emotional harm, or an unexpected death. It has been estimated that 5% of our population currently have PTSD and 8% have had the disease sometime in their life. Continue reading for different ways to help Veterans.

Our Goal
Take Action
It is important to reintegrate Veterans with PTSD into the Waco community because they have served our country, they have protected Americans and our rights as a nation, and they bring knowledge, bravery, and freedom to our community!
You can take action as an individual by listening to their stories, thanking them, and directing them to appropriate help if they need it. In Waco, you can volunteer at retirement homes and interact with other members of your community.
Potential Activities for the Community
- A golf tournament
- A picnic
- A BBQ
- A tennis tournament
- A movie night
- Arts & Crafts time
- A potluck
- A 5K to raise money for active military
Thank a Veteran for Their Service!

Let's Build a Strong Sense of Community
What We Learned at iEngage
Blake- I learned more about the amendments. I learned about who Hatton W. Sumners.
Brendan- I learned what it means to advocate - to speak out about a cause. I also learned that there is small job growth in Waco.
Luke- I learned that a family of four that makes less than $25,000 annually is classified as impoverished. I learned that 80% of the workers in Habitat for Humanity are volunteers.
Erica- I learned that in the past Waco had euthanized 10,000 pets in one year, but then they made some changes and this year they only euthanized about 1,000 pets. I learned that PTSD could happen in the first few weeks, or years later.
Maggie- I learned that 5% of the population currently has PTSD. I also learned that 40% of Waco is in poverty.
Paige- I learned that if you get your bachelor's degree, your poverty rate is lower at 5%. I also learned that PTSD is not completely curable, but it can be helped by therapy, medication, and other treatments.
Jenna- I learned how to argue effectively. I learned that there are a lot of problems in the world that people are trying to solve, but the problems keep evolving.
Olivia- I learned that PTSD is an anxiety disorder, not a mental disorder. PTSD can create a rift in relationships.
Helena- I learned that people who eat at fast food places at least two times per week are more likely to litter. I also learned that approximately 750,000 men, women, and children are homeless in the U.S.
Garrett- I learned that the I35 bridge in Waco was made possible by TxDOT (Texas Department of Transportation) and Baylor. I learned a lot from Mayor Kyle Deaver when he came to talk to us!
