June Newsletter
Principal's Message
June is here! Every September it feels that we are starting something new and exciting, with June feeling so far away, in some ways it's hard to comprehend. Yet a few blinks of an eye later, and here we are in June. It is always a highlight of the school year as this is the time of year where we have field trips, outdoor activities, and we see the fruits of many months of hard work showing through in the learnings of the students.
We also have some fun traditions in June - on June 21 we will recognize our grade 4 students and all that they have contributed to our school over the past five years while also wishing them all the best as they move onto middle school. Parents are welcome to attend the Grade 4 Farewell assembly on Friday, June 21 at 9:10am. Students will then participate in a variety of fun activities including a BBQ lunch and a massive water fight to end the day!
On the last day of school we have our annual School Picnic. This will take place on the schoolyard from 11:30-12:45. Parents are welcome to join us at the school to celebrate the year and have lunch together. You can either bring your own picnic lunch or purchase Subway Sandwiches (preorder info below). Then the grade 3's and 4's will head off to the Steinbach Aquatic Centre for swimming, the grade 2's will head to Flippers Gymnastics, the grade 1's will head to the splash park and the K's will do some activities on the schoolyard. It will be a fun way to end the year!

Welcome Mr. Rempel
As you have likely already heard, Mr. Hiebert will be leaving us at Elmdale this fall as he will be moving on to be the principal at Woodlawn School. We are pleased to announce that Mr. Anders Rempel has been announced as the new principal of Elmdale School, starting in fall of 2024.
Mr. Rempel is a familiar face at Elmdale as his own children once attended here. He comes to us most recently from Alberta, but has been a teacher and Vice-Principal in Hanover School Division prior to that. He comes to us with more than 19 years of teaching and school leadership experience as well as a Bachelor of Education (1999), Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Education (2006) and a Masters of Science, Educational Psychology (2014).
We are excited to see how Mr. Rempel will put his own spin on the wonderful things already happening at Elmdale. Please join us all in making Mr. Rempel feel welcome and at home at Elmdale School!
UMBRELLA SKILL FOR JUNE - Healthy Lifestyle Skills
This month with the Umbrella Project, we will build our Healthy Lifestyle skills.
Lifestyle skills include the healthy habits your child needs to have the strength to hold up that big umbrella they are building. Food, sleep, outdoor time and other brain foods are extremely important in helping your child use their valuable coping skills.
When we’re hungry, tired, or haven’t had enough exercise, our brains don’t work as well, making it more difficult to practice all the other skills of wellbeing. We can become grouchy, short-tempered, and less capable of coping with the day-to-day challenges of life. Even people with the strongest coping skills can’t use them as well when they aren’t feeding their brains properly. Making the choice to establish healthy lifestyle behaviours (such as eating well, sleeping enough, and exercising regularly) has been shown to reduce stress, elevate mood, improve immune system function, and make learning easier.
Recharge with quality brain food
Summer is a wonderful time to feed our brain. The school year can be busy and rushed - so take advantage of the summer months as time to help your child recharge their brain. I like to think about brain food not just as what we actually eat, but everything our brain consumes. What we take in with our other senses also feeds our brain: what we see, hear, touch and smell are all fuel for creating the right neural pathways in our brain.
Over the summer, make sure your child's brain is getting a balanced diet of quality brain foods mixed in with some of the lower-quality inputs like too much time spent on screens.
Here are some favorite brain foods: great music, new and engaging experiences, time with friends, walks in the forest, snuggling, unstructured outdoor play, laughter, giving to others and so many more.
We will be sending home a Healthy Habits Bingo Sheet to get your student motivated! Have fun completing these as individuals or as a family.
Enjoy the summer!
Music Therapy
We wish to thank Variety, the Children’s Charity for generously funding our Music Therapy program again this school year. This year our group was led by local music therapist, Lisa Solnick, and each week a group of 8 students had a lot of fun creatively working on self-expression and social skills together. A huge thank you to Ms. Lisa and Variety for bringing this special opportunity to our school.
School Picnic
Our annual Elmdale School Picnic will take place on Thursday June 27 from 11:30-12:45. Parents, grandparents and loved ones are welcome to join their child for a picnic lunch on the school playground starting at 11:30 on June 27. This is always a highlight of the school year and a great way to say good bye to another year at Elmdale.
Our PAC has once again offered to coordinate a Subway Lunch. Order forms will go home in early June and Subway sandwiches will be delivered on the morning of the picnic. Please make sure that orders are returned with the oldest in your family so that ordering and delivery can be kept as simple as possible.
Stay tuned for more details closer to the end of June.
