Message from Principal Zimmerman
Hello Lincoln Families! I am so excited and proud to share that Lincoln Elementary School for the Arts was granted the 2024 Magnet School of Distinction Award by Magnet Schools of America! To receive a national merit award, members of Magnet Schools of America must submit a detailed application that is scored by a panel of educators. These schools are judged and scored on their demonstrated ability to raise student academic achievement, promote racial and socioeconomic diversity, provide integrated curricula and instruction, and create strong family and community partnerships that enhance the school’s magnet theme. This award belongs to all of us- families, community, students and staff- as we are all part of making Lincoln such a wonderful place for children to grow and learn! Congratulations! It has been wonderful to see so many families joining our winter conferences this month. The home and school partnership is the most important aspect of supporting your children’s education, and we are so fortunate to have such dedicated families as part of our community. Thank you for your ongoing support!

Kindergarten News
February is a busy month! We will celebrate Groundhog’s Day, Valentine’s day, the 100th day of school, Presidents’ Day, and I love to Read month.
In ELA, we will cover the topics: Trees (How do living things change as they grow?), Fresh from the Farm (What kinds of things grow on a farm?), The Four Seasons (How are the seasons different?), and What’s the Weather (What happens is different kinds of weather?) Sight words we are learning this month include: are, with, he, is, little, she, was. Kindergartners are learning to identify characters, setting, and events in a story.
In math, we will be working with the number line and putting numbers in order. Kindergarteners will rote count to 40, count objects to 20 (counting on, one-to-one correspondence, counting to answer, “How many?”). We will focus on representational addition with sums to 10 and subtractions with minuends to 10.
Ms. Johnson, Mrs. Karsnia, Mrs. Ovitt and Mrs. Peterson
First Grade News
Hello First Grade Families,
The year is flying by and this weather is beyond words! It's beautiful! We are staying busy at school and working hard! It was great to see so many of you at conferences! Thank you for taking time out of your day to meet with us and team up with us to get your students what they need. That being said, here are a few things we are working on in school...
Math: We have shifted our focus to shapes! 3-D shapes, 2-D shapes, parts of shapes, and shapes attributes. We will also be moving into graphing soon. Some ideas on what to work on at home, would be to have students point out objects at home that look similar to shapes, or take a walk outside and look for shapes!
ELA: Students have been doing a fantastic job with the Bridge 2 Read program, they have been working on the RABBIT pattern, the floss pattern, and blends. We have also been reading and are continuing to read some pretty cool books about the past and present as well as our health theme for the month, dental hygiene!
This month is short but oh so fun! Just a reminder of a few dates...
February 14th - Valentine's Day Celebration (students can bring valentines if they choose to)
February 15th - 100th Day of school (students are encouraged to dress up as their 100 year old self or wear something with 100 things on it!)
Thank you so much for working as a team with us!
Mrs. Hustad, Mrs. Mehan, Mrs. Skinner and Ms. Walz
Second Grade News
Happy February!
It is I Love To Read Month! We will be wrapping-up our third Wonders Unit focusing on what have you learned about the world that surprises you?
Number Corner - this month we will be using flags to look at fractions, have a month-long game of Capture the Clock, using addition strategies in our Base 10 Bank, and keep practicing our quick facts. We are also starting Unit 5 in Bridges Math. We will represent numbers using groups of 1s, 10s, and 100s to demonstrate an understanding of place value to 1,000. Use models, sketches, and numbers to add and subtract within 1,000. Mentally add and subtract multiples of 10 and 100 to and from any number within 1,000. Solve money story problems involving pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters using correct notation.
Please continue to read at home for 20 minutes each night!
Mrs. Coubal, Mrs. Howman, Mrs. Pitzl, and Mr. Robertson
Third Grade News
Hello Grade 3 Families,
February is full of fun learning! In ELA, we will finish Unit 3. Then in Unit 4 the big idea is “What are different ways to meet challenges?” The students will read folktales, expository text, and poems. Our comprehension skills will focus on point of view, compare & contrast, cause & effect, and theme.
In math, we started Unit 5 Multiplication, Division, and Area. The students will solve multiplication and division problems, calculate the area of rectangles, and use rectangular arrays to model and solve multiplication and division problems.
Fourth Grade News
Hello Fourth Grade Families,
We are about halfway through Unit 5 in math. This unit focuses on measuring angles. Sorting and classifying shapes based upon their angles and the number of sides they have. Calculating the area and perimeter of rectangles. So far we have learned how to use a protractor to measure and create angles, and we have been classifying pattern block shapes by the type of angle they have: Acute, Obtuse, or Right. Keep your eyes open for optional homework sheets that will be sent home throughout the unit to offer your child extra practice.
We have just finished testing our wind turbines in science class. Our challenge was to design a wind turbine that could generate 2 volts of electricity. They were given different materials to use to create designs, and thought like real scientists by only changing one variable at a time. Don't forget to ask your fourth grader which design was the best at generating the most volts of electricity!
We will be finishing unit 3 in reading after our unit test has been given the week of Feb 12th. Our main focus has been on the author's point of view in this unit. We studied biographies, autobiographies and informational text throughout this unit. We focused on learning about people such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, Westley Wallace Law and Abraham Lincoln who were leaders that made a difference. Spelling reminder: During the unit 3 testing week there will not be any new spelling words sent home.
