VOGELTOWN SCHOOL PANUI
TE KURA O HUATOKI. TERM 3, WEEK 10, 2024.
KIA ORA VOGELTOWN WHĀNAU!
We often wander into the hall but may not understand the significance of the carvings that frame the entrance. Each panel brings to life our vision for learning through actions and qualities connected to historical local Māori.
The Huatoki area was settled by the people of Ngāti Te Whiti. The Huatoki River has two mauri stones (sacred stones), Paetawa and Paeare. The stones provided food for the people and mark the boundaries for Ngati Te Whiti.
Our carvings tell the story of Tuparikino, Kahutaiaroa and Urukinaki - leaders of the local people who were entrusted to protect the sacred stones in the Huatoki River.
As the main chief of the area, Tuparikino was involved in many wars. He protected the whenua (land) from neighbouring tribes who wanted this area for its fertility. Food was the currency of the time and tribes would fight for control of the land. The adze above him shows Paetawa and bush fern designs shows mana over the land - Manaaki Whenua – care for the land.
Tuparikino's son, Kahutauaroa, followed in his father's footsteps - protecting the tangata (people). He became the Mana Tangata or war chief. The adze above him shows Paeare representing mana over the people - Manaaki Tangata – care for the people.
Kahutauaroa's daughter - Urukinaki, had her marae besieged by an enemy tribe. She saw her people starving so went to the enemy to offer her hand in marriage - saving them and sealing peace for the people of Ngāti Tuparikino. She believed in being educated. Her hands are outstretched to welcome you and the kupenga or net is to capture knowledge – haere whakamua – go forward.
I hope that everyone has an enjoyable break and returns to school well rested and ready for another term of learning!
Ryves
A GOODBYE AND A THANK YOU!
Today marks the final day for Mrs. Dayna Lewis, who will be starting her maternity leave. While we are sad to see her leave, we are thrilled for her too, and eagerly await a visit to school with her new baby!
I would also like to acknowledge the great work of Mrs. Britt Webling, who has been teaching in Room 8 this term. She has done a wonderful job at maintaining the learning while Mrs. Broderick has been away and has worked effectively within the Paetoki team. We are fortunate that she will be continuing with us by teaching in Room 11 while Mrs. Dayna Lewis is on leave.
HOLIDAY READING IDEAS
The holidays can be a busy time but that doesn’t mean you can’t find time for some quality family bonding-and what better way to do this than by sharing a love of reading? Try these ideas to promote a love of reading and develop some memories in the process!
Make time for reading every day.
No matter how busy your holiday schedule is, try to carve out 20 minutes each day for reading together. This quality time will send the message to your child that reading is important to you and should be important to them as well.
Visit the library.
Lots of libraries offer special holiday events. These can be great motivators for kids to grab a book or two!
Encourage independent reading.
If your child is old enough, let them choose their own books to read during the holidays. This will give them a sense of ownership over their reading experience but also allow them to identify what it is that they like to read. Guide them if they need help, but ultimately let them make their own choices.
Read aloud together.
Just because your kids are getting older doesn’t mean you have to stop reading together as a family! Gather everyone around and take turns reading aloud from a favourite book.
Make it fun!
Last but not least, don’t forget to have some fun when reading! Find ways of bringing stories and texts alive like having random conversations about the text, linking families outings to events in the stories you’ve read, or doing art or crafts inspired by the stories. The more fun they have with it, the more likely they’ll be to want to keep doing it!
TARANAKI SCHOOLS CROSS COUNTRY
MESSAGE FROM THE ORGANISERS
Thanks so much for coming along and supporting yesterday, what an amazing day! It was so cool to see all the supporters out there cheering on those awesome runners – what a hot day to run! We always love to host so many people on our home course, It is a really tough course - a true cross country course which you don’t find very often, so we are lucky to have such a great resource here in Taranaki.
Unfortunately, we always seem to have a little complaint about the day. This year one of our young teenage volunteers faced some trouble with people driving on the road through the course, when he requested people stop, they ignored him, which was disappointing to hear. A good reminder to ask the families that are coming along to support that they follow the instructions of our volunteer officials. Thank you to the majority of people who were respectful.
On a brighter note, it is always so cool to see the amazing support – high fives, hugs and cheering for those who were happy, the chants heard around the course, hugs and kind words to those who had tears, trouble breathing or were vomiting, the big bright smiles, laughs and celebrations of those on the podium for an individual medal or team award. A big event like this certainly does bring out the best in people both athletically and emotionally.
Thank you for your support of the day, it is nice to see the numbers staying strong when other sports are experiencing a bit of a drop off. If any of your students are asking “What next?”, that is it sorry. However, if they enjoy running, there are running clubs all around Taranaki who offer somewhere to run during summer and over the winter months (winter is when cross country is done).

HATS IN TERM 4
It's almost that time of year when our tamariki need protection from the sun's harmful rays - bucket hats must be worn every day during Term 4. We have the famous Vogeltown School bucket hats for sale at the senior office for $20 each, but any bucket hat can be worn. Children not wearing a hat will need to remain in a shaded area during break times. Thank you for your cooperation with this.
VOGELTOWN HOODIES
Our awesome Vogeltown Hoodies can be ordered via GameChanger. You can even pop into their store on the corner of Huatoki St and Carrington St to try on sizes. Their website for orders is https://www.gamechanger.org.nz/vogeltownschool
TEST YOUR SMOKE ALARMS
Daylight savings is the perfect time to:
- Test your smoke alarms - gently push and hold the button until they activate. If they don’t work, you’ll need to get some photoelectric long life smoke alarms.
- Practice your escape plan with your whānau - make sure you have two ways out of each room.
- Get to your safe meeting place (the letterbox is a great place to meet).
It’s also a good time to clean your smoke alarms by wiping them with a cloth and vacuuming them to get the dust out to prevent unwanted alarms.
We can’t smell when we are asleep, so they need to go in hallways, bedrooms, main living areas, and at a change of levels. Heat alarms are recommended for the kitchen.
