Tip of the Month
As we enter the cold and flu season, we want to remind everyone of the importance of keeping our school community healthy and safe. To help prevent the spread of illness, we kindly ask that you take the following precautions:
- Monitor your child’s health and keep them home if they show symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, or fatigue.
- Encourage proper hygiene, including frequent handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes, and avoiding close contact with others when feeling unwell.
- Ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the colder weather to stay warm and reduce the risk of illness.
If your child is absent due to illness, please inform the school as soon as possible. We appreciate your cooperation in keeping our students and staff healthy during this season.
The Power of Reading at Home Each Night
Students reading every night at home is important because it significantly improves their vocabulary, comprehension skills, critical thinking abilities, and overall language development by exposing them to a wider range of words and sentence structures, while also fostering a love of reading and building a strong foundation for academic success; and reading practice outside of school reinforces and expands on what they learn in the classroom.
Students should be reading at home for 20 minutes every night. If you need books, please contact your child's teacher and we will send books home.
Importance of Sleep for Elementary Students
Sleep is crucial for elementary school students as it impacts their physical health, cognitive development, and emotional well-being. Children aged 6–12 need 9–12 hours of sleep per night, yet many do not get enough due to early school start times, screen exposure, and busy schedules.
Importance of Sleep for Elementary Students
Cognitive Development & Learning
- Enhances memory, concentration, and problem-solving skills.
- Helps in processing new information and retaining lessons.
Physical Health
- Strengthens the immune system, reducing illness.
- Supports growth and development.
Emotional & Behavioral Regulation
- Reduces mood swings, anxiety, and irritability.
- Helps in better social interactions and emotional control.
Academic Performance
- Well-rested students perform better on tests and classwork.
- Increases motivation and engagement in school activities.
Effects of School on Sleep
Early School Start Times
- Forces children to wake up earlier, reducing sleep duration.
- Leads to grogginess, lack of focus, and lower academic performance.
Screen Time & Technology Use
- Exposure to screens (homework, entertainment) before bed disrupts sleep patterns.
Solutions to Improve Sleep in Students
- Schools can consider later start times to allow for sufficient rest.
- Parents should set a consistent bedtime routine and limit screen time before bed.
- Encouraging relaxing activities (reading, deep breathing) before sleep can help.
