Team Dublin Weekly Update
Week of March 25, 2024
Mr. Kirschenbaum, ELA
Mr. O'Malley, Math 6 and 7
Friday morning. MANY of our dublin students are not completing their homeworks. If it is helpful encourage your student to come to my room during recess once or twice a week to complete their homeworks or on days I am after school.
Ms. Wesselhoft, Geography
Students have come home this weekend with a packet of work in page protectors. They are to use those materials to 1) complete their study guides, and 2) review for their test on Monday. It is a two part test assessing Criterion A: Knowing and Understanding and Criterion D: Critical Thinking, as applied to our studies of Population Growth and Urbanization.
On Tuesday, we pause to do an in-class Geo Bee. This is a pre-qualifier to have 5 representatives from Team Dublin compete against the other teams. This is not a graded assessment.
Then, we will wrap up the week looking into the SDG’s (Sustainable Development Goals), and having kids think about ways we can sustain this rapidly growing population.
to come
Ms. Osman, Science
This week our students will be delving deeper into our weather patterns units, exploring the intricate connections they have with the water cycle. This topic offers an enriching educational experience that not only enhances our students' understanding of the natural world but also fosters critical thinking and scientific inquiry. As part of this exploration, we want to encourage our students to immerse themselves fully in the learning process. Therefore, there will be no homework assigned this week. Instead, we encourage students to utilize this time as an opportunity to catch up on any missing assignments or to engage in additional study to reinforce their understanding of previous topics covered in class. I will be accepting late work without penalty this week and will be available after school on Tuesday and Wednesday after school. I will be available on Thursday by prior arrangement only! Please note that you may have a student who needs to fix a computer glitch on a test that we took on Tuesday. If the student does not come in, I can't help them fix it and that score is the one that goes on the record. It is relatively easy for me to check from their account ONLY if they have the correct answer and the computer recorded the wrong answer on the teacher page.
Please help your student remember that manners count. Your student is expected to be respectful and polite. Your student is expected to write on paper, not on desks or chairs. Your student is expected to turn in work and to pay attention in class. Gum chewing is NOT allowed. Your student knows the rules. Thank you.
Finally - if your student drinks water in class - I am almost completely out of normal size paper cups. Your student knows if your student routinely requests water. I provide the filters for the pitchers. I started the year with a couple hundred cups which are long gone. Please consider cups as a donation item.
Ms. Patsalos, Intermediate ESOL
Ms. Garcia, Beginner ELA and Geography
MLL newcomers are busy authors in World Geography this week as they finish writing, revising, and publishing their travel books about an Asian country of choice. Through this summative project, students are learning English while simultaneously developing valuable digital skills such as graphic design, online research, and how to use digital tools.
In ELA, newcomer students are engaged in pre-work for their Unit 4 project, “The Art of Storytelling.” Through this project, they will write a movie script, film and act in their movie, edit their movie, and publish it. Much of this work will take place during the month that we will not have access to classroom computers, so we are asking that one student per group be allowed to bring their cell phone to class so they can use it to film their movie. This will be arranged with the team administrators.
Students in Beginning Literacy continue to make great progress in their reading of English language texts. Almost all students are meeting their comprehension goals for their individual book reads and some are ready to move to a new reading lexile group. Students are also doing much better with meeting their weekly System 44 goals. Please continue to support them from home by encouraging them to read or by taking them to the DC Public Library to borrow books to read.
