Dear Proviso Families,

As I am sure you are aware, there are media reports regarding planned immigration raids occurring in the Chicago area starting on Tuesday. We want to express the District’s unwavering support for our community during this difficult time. We know that events like this can cause great anxiety for our students and their families. Proviso Township High School District 209 is dedicated to protecting the right of all students to have access to a free and appropriate public education, regardless of their immigration status.

As stress and anxiety rise in relation to these news stories, our schools will remain a safe space for each and every child. We will align the needs of our students with all available resources as we navigate these uncertain times together, as a school community.

As we support our students and families, our top priority is the safety and well-being of all students. If you believe that your child needs emotional support, please reach out to your child’s school principal to coordinate our efforts. Our counselors, social workers, and other mental health professionals are available to assist. They are trained to help students cope and manage their emotions effectively.

It is also important for families to know their legal rights and the protections available to them. If you have questions, please reach out to trusted legal service providers for guidance. While not everyone has access to a lawyer, the attached document contains many outside resources that you may want to consider contacting.

We also recognize that families may be worried about their information being shared with federal immigration officials. We would like to reassure you that the educational records of your children are confidential under federal and State law and generally will not be disclosed to authorities unless mandated by a court order. Our employees are dedicated to protecting each student's and family's privacy.

As a reminder:

Proviso Township High School District 209 does not require or ask for our students’ or their families’ immigration status. In general, federal and State law prohibit school districts from requesting or collecting records related to a student or family’s citizenship or immigration status.
Proviso Township High School District 209 will NOT be coordinating efforts with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in ANY way, nor will it assist ICE in the enforcement of federal civil immigration law.
Proviso Township High School District 209 will not grant ICE agents entry onto or into its school buildings unless they produce and are executing a criminal warrant signed by a judge. Even where there is a criminal warrant, please keep in mind that students have a right to an attorney before talking to ICE or law enforcement agents and are protected by their Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. We have trained all school building administrators on students’ rights and the appropriate protocols in the event that ICE agents arrive at any campus.

It is essential that we unite as a community during these trying times. We are dedicated to making sure that every student has access to a secure, safe, and caring environment. Know that as a member of our Proviso Family, you have our full support regardless of immigration status.

Como recordatorio:

El Distrito Escolar de las Escuelas Secundarias del Municipio de Proviso 209 no requiere ni solicita información sobre el estado migratorio de nuestros estudiantes o sus familias.
