Peak Prep Principal's Update
December 8, 2021
Dear Families,
Winter break is almost here, as is the end of the first semester. In speaking with the faculty, they have noted that students are beginning to spend less time each day working on their courses, and absences are increasing. I want to encourage our students to spend a MINIMUM of 4 hours per day engaged in educational activities provided by the school. If your student is behind in any courses, they should be spending a MINIMUM of 6 hours per day working in their courses. At this point in the school year, it is critical that students spend the time needed to successfully pass their courses with at least a 60% relative grade (Credit earning).
Parents/Guardians: Please take a few moments to check your student's progress in each of their courses and reach out to teachers if your student needs support or a plan to get on track. They will have the entire Winter Break to get caught up!
Thank you for your continued support and for being a partner in your student's learning! I look forward to sharing information with you throughout the year. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Warmest Regards,
Mrs. Sabrina Ciolino

Answers to Parents’ Questions about Vaccinating Kids
It’s understandable that some parents have concerns about getting their children vaccinated against COVID-19. That’s why Ventura County healthcare providers are sharing their expertise in a series of videos that answer common questions and clear up some harmful misconceptions. You can see the videos at www.vcoe.org/covid-videos.
There’s also been a lot of talk about the State of California’s upcoming requirement that students be vaccinated against COVID-19. The mandate is not yet in effect but is expected to begin sometime during the 2022-2023 school year. The Ventura County Office of Education has prepared an FAQ about the mandate, which is available in English and Spanish.

What triggers re-engagement?
Re-engagement may be triggered by one or several of the following items:
2) If a pupil is not generating attendance for more than three (3) school days or 60% of the instructional days in a school week,
3) If the pupil violates the terms of their master agreement.
4) If a student fails to attend daily synchronous instruction or live interaction.
5) If satisfactory academic progress in one or more courses is not being made.
What Are The Student Attendance Laws?
All children between 6 and 18 years of age are required by California’s Education Code to attend school, and their parents have a legal responsibility to ensure their child’s attendance.
48200 – Children Between Ages of 6 and 18 Years
Each person between the ages of 6 and 18 years, not otherwise exempted, is subject to compulsory full-time education.
What is SART?
You have been invited to a SART meeting now what?
The goal of this meeting is to get the student back on track, not to punish the student. We are hoping for improvement, not perfection.
How Does SART Help?
SART provides a wide variety of services that are designed to meet the needs of students and their families. The ultimate goal is to help students stay in school, attend regularly, and graduate. To that end, SART:
- Recommends placements
- Connects families with agencies for counseling, tutoring, and other services
- Works with probation and law enforcement
- Reinforces parental legal responsibility for student attendance, as required by the California Education Code.
Satisfactory Academic Progress
- The student's achievement and engagement in the program.
- The completion of assignments, assessments, or other indicators that evidence that the pupil is working on assignments.
- Learning required concepts, as determined by the supervising teacher.
- Progressing toward successful completion of the course of study or individual course, as determined by the supervising teacher.
Reasons for Excused Absences
According to the State of California EC Section 48205 a pupil shall be excused from school when the absence is:
- Due to the pupil’s illness, including an absence for the benefit of the pupil’s mental or behavioral health. The state board shall update its illness verification regulations, as necessary, to account for including a pupil’s absence for the benefit of the pupil’s mental or behavioral health within the scope of this paragraph.
- Due to quarantine under the direction of a county or city health officer.
- For the purpose of having medical, dental, optometrical, or chiropractic services rendered.
- For the purpose of attending the funeral services of a member of the pupil’s immediate family, so long as the absence is not more than one day if the service is conducted in California and not more than three days if the service is conducted outside California.
- For the purpose of jury duty in the manner provided for by law.
- Due to the illness or medical appointment during school hours of a child of whom the pupil is the custodial parent, including absences to care for a sick child, for which the school shall not require a note from a doctor.
- For justifiable personal reasons, including, but not limited to, an appearance in court, attendance at a funeral service, observance of a holiday or ceremony of the pupil’s religion, attendance at a religious retreat, attendance at an employment conference, or attendance at an educational conference on the legislative or judicial process offered by a nonprofit organization, when the pupil’s absence is requested in writing by the parent or guardian and approved by the principal or a designated representative pursuant to uniform standards established by the governing board of the school district.
- For the purpose of serving as a member of a precinct board for an election pursuant to Section 12302 of the Elections Code.
- For the purpose of spending time with a member of the pupil’s immediate family who is an active duty member of the uniformed services, as defined in Section 49701, and has been called to duty for, is on leave from, or has immediately returned from, deployment to a combat zone or combat support position. Absences granted pursuant to this paragraph shall be granted for a period of time to be determined at the discretion of the superintendent of the school district.
- For the purpose of attending the pupil’s naturalization ceremony to become a United States citizen.
- For the purpose of participating in a cultural ceremony or event.
- Authorized at the discretion of a school administrator, as described in subdivision (c) of Section 48260.
Please sign your Semester 2 Master Agreements
We must receive your student's signed Semester 2 master agreement by no later than December 17th! If we do not receive your semester 2 MA, your student may lose their spot in our school.
Is your student behind on their classwork?
Students that are behind pace have Winter Break (12/20-12/31) to get caught up (10 total weekdays). If you are someone who is currently behind in their courses, DO NOT GIVE UP! You can do this! The system will not expect you to be working, so you can get back on track and finish strong if you use your time wisely. Remeber, when the relative grade is 60%, that means you have earned credit for your course. The relative grade is the grade a student would receive if they stopped working and received 0% for all unscored, counted activities. As a reminder, students need a final grade of at least 60% to earn credit for a course.
If you need help getting yourself organized or developing a strategy to pass your courses please please please let us know! Don't give up!
