Happy Birthday!
Mrs. De Los Santos! November 14
🎉🎂 Hooray for Mrs. De Los Santos, our second-grade star,
In the realm of teaching, you've set the bar!
With laughter and learning, you fill up the room,
Like a burst of sunshine, dispelling the gloom.
In Oasis Elementary, you're the talk of the town,
The queen of the classroom, wearing your birthday crown.
You wrangle the ABCs, and the numbers as well,
Turning each lesson into a magical spell.
Your second graders adore you, it's clear to see,
Mrs. De Los Santos, you make learning pure glee!
On this special day, let the confetti fall,
May your cake be sweet, and your joy stand tall.
So here's to you, with a cheer and a toast,
Happy Birthday, dear teacher, you're the one we love most! 🎈🎁

Supplies
We moved the supplies and copiers down to 17 so you could have access to them if you happen to be working outside of regular office hours. We are, however, noticing that we are going through more supplies and faster than we have in the past.
Please do not hoard supplies in your classroom. These supplies are meant for all staff and students, so taking more than you need for your classroom does not leave any supplies for others. As always, please use the clipboard for any supplies Melissa should reorder. Thank you!

Hall Passes
The hall passes are being sent to pubs today. Please continue to use the ones you have until they come in. The electronic version of the hall pass is linked below and in the files in our Oasis Teams Drive. We will put some hard copies for the week in your box.
The reason we are requiring paper hall passes is so we can collect data about days, times, and lengths of times students are out of the classroom. We know, anecdotally, that students are all over the place. We can see them! In order to support you, we need to pinpoint where to use both our human and financial resources. Thank you for helping us out!
Class Escorts
Please remember your classes need to have adult escorts during the following movement:
- From Line to Class in the Morning
- To and From Recess
- To and From Lunch
- To and From Specials
- To Dismissal Area
PBIS Tier 1
Thank you to all that came to the PBIS Tier 1 meeting to provide input. We appreciate you!
Social Emotional Learning
Mr. Eugene Hamilton
When the SLT met at the end of last year and the beginning of this one, it became clear that SEL needed to be a focus this year. Our student's behavior across campus supports this as well.
To support our efforts to increase social-emotional learning across our campus, Mr. Eugene Hamilton will join us for four days this year to guide us in implementation. I can promise you Mr. Hamilton is not a stuffy consultant who needs to learn what he is talking about. He is an expert in the field of SEL, and he is funny.
I know some of you are hesitant about this. I see you, and I hear you. I am asking that you come with an open mind. What we are witnessing at Oasis right now is not unique to Oasis. Students everywhere are showing more emotional dysregulation that often ends in violence. The tools we have used in the past are less effective than they used to be. It is time to think big, think outside the box, and try something new.
Social and emotional learning (SEL) has become increasingly prominent in education in recent years, primarily focusing on the benefits it provides students. However, it is equally crucial for us to acknowledge the significance of adult SEL within schools, as it profoundly impacts the students we serve.
Our own SEL can positively influence our students in multiple ways. Teachers can model empathy, self-awareness, and effective communication, creating a supportive and nurturing learning environment. By prioritizing our own SEL, we become better equipped to handle the challenges and demands of public education, leading to a calm, focused learning environment that promotes student well-being and academic success.
Moreover, our strong sense of self-awareness and emotional regulation enables us to respond empathetically and supportively to our students' needs, building trust and rapport with them. Positive relationships with our students are essential for their engagement, motivation, and well-being.
Finally, our own SEL has a ripple effect extending beyond the classroom. By engaging in self-care practices and building emotional resilience, we collaborate more effectively with colleagues, creating a supportive and cohesive staff community. This helps to enhance the school climate, fostering a sense of belonging and well-being for everyone.

Accomodations vs Modifications
Some of you have asked about the difference between modifications and accommodations and how to implement them in your classroom. As educators, we strive to ensure that all students have equal opportunities to succeed academically. For students with disabilities, this means providing accommodations or modifications to meet their needs. This month's Oasis University will focus on the difference between accommodations and modifications and how a collaborative approach involving families, teachers, and the Individualized Education Program (IEP) team is crucial.
Accommodations are changes made to how students access information, participate in school activities, or demonstrate their learning without changing the curriculum. These changes can include adjusting the workload, providing extra assistance, adapting assignments, or changing the physical environment. Accommodations aim to create a level playing field for students with disabilities, enabling them to fully engage in learning.
Modifications, on the other hand, involve changing what is being taught or what a student is expected to learn and demonstrate. For instance, while the class learns to tell time, one student may only be expected to identify the hours. Modifications are necessary when the standard curriculum is not suitable or accessible for a student with disabilities.
Our team of educational specialists is available to work with you in supporting our students on IEPs. Please contact them if you have concerns about your students or need help implementing the accommodations and modifications recommended in the IEP.
Providing individualized educational support is essential for students with disabilities to achieve academic success. Accommodations and modifications play a significant role in providing equal opportunities for these students. Collaborating with special education teachers ensures that each student receives the support they need to thrive in the classroom and beyond. Let's continue to promote inclusivity and empower every student to reach their full potential.
