Weekly Memo
Some thoughts for the starting school year
Hi Everyone,
It has been wonderful having all of our students back in the building this week. We have had a lot of activities to kick off back-to-school season. We are very thankful for our Senior Facilitators who gave up their last day of summer to run freshmen/transfer student orientation on Monday. This was a great opportunity for our newest Wildcats to tour YHS, meet their Pride Leaders, and get to know their classroom teachers.
On Tuesday we welcomed everyone back and shared that our overall theme for the year is "You Matter." Staff wore matching shirts (thank you, Yorkwise for sponsoring, and Jaime Alonso for the design) and we showed a video during our opening assembly with a message from all of our staff members to students about why they matter. (Feel free to watch the video -- just remember we are all professional educators, not actors!).
We spent the first two days running through activities planned by our SEL committee to really emphasize relationship-building and getting to know all of our students. We find that this is a good way to ease back into the school year, for both students and staff. If your student has not already shared with you, be sure to ask them about Tuesday's relay race. It was lots of fun and great to have our student body cheering each other on... shout out to the JUNIOR CLASS for winning the relay.
As always, if you need anything or have any questions please reach out to Mike, Liza, or me.
Thanks,
Amanda
Parking and Drop-Off
If you are a student driver, please park in the large parking lot near the York Community Auditorium entrance. Please remember to drive safely and respectfully while on campus. If you are dropping off your student, please do so in the front loop so your student can enter the building through the main entrance. This will help with traffic flow and make sure everyone gets where they need to be in a timely manner. We know that sometimes dropping off or picking up at the YCA entrance is easier -- but it does impact the flow of drivers and buses on that street, so if at all possible please use the front entrance at those times.
Please make sure to park behind the crosswalk when picking up your student in the afternoon. This will ensure that our YSD vans are able to safely park and pick up their students for transportation.

Announcing York Education Foundation’s First Annual Golf Tournament!
On Sept 12, 2024, the York Education Foundation (YEF) will hold its first annual golf tournament at the venerable York Golf and Tennis Club (YGTC) situated along the picturesque York River. The 18 hole tournament will be played in a scramble format and golfers can register as foursomes or as singles. A chef-prepared lunch (hot off the grill on the course), electric carts and a post-tournament reception are included with registration.
The classic Old Clubhouse will host the reception, which will feature passed hors d’oeuvres, a silent auction and a cash bar. Non-golfers are welcome to attend the reception, for which separate tickets are available.
Please consider supporting YEF and its mission of funding grants for creative curriculum to York public school educators and employees by joining us at YGTC on September 12!
