News from the ABC Unified School District - 2/1/24
Next Week: Town Hall Meetings - Potential School Consolidation
As you’ve likely heard, the ABCUSD Board of Education has created an ad hoc committee to look into the efficient use of our school facilities as we face declining enrollment across the district. The School Facilities Capacities and Declining Enrollment Ad Hoc Committee has been meeting since May 2023, studying district-wide data and trends, and recently identified the following six schools, Aloha, Furgeson, Hawaiian, Juarez, Kennedy, and Willow, for further review and possible recommendation for consolidation.
Input from our families, staff, and the community plays an important role in the Ad Hoc Committee’s process, and they will be holding two town hall meetings to hear from you. The meetings are set for the following dates:
February 7, 2024
6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Artesia D.E.S. Portuguese Hall
11903 Ashworth St.
Artesia, CA 90701
February 15, 2024
6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
C. Robert Lee Community Center
21815 Pioneer Bl.
Hawaiian Gardens, CA 90716
More information on this process is available on the District Website, and we encourage you to read past meeting minutes to understand the process so far: School Facilities Capacities & Declining Enrollment Ad Hoc Committee

Community Advisory Committee Learns About Self-Determination Program
The ABCUSD Special Education Department holds regular meetings with a group of families to get feedback and share information. Last month, this group, called the Community Advisory Committee, heard from representatives from the Harbor Regional Center about a new Self-Determination Program. The program is designed to help those with developmental disabilities and their families access services and supports. Thank you to our Special Education and Special Education Local Plan Area staff who organize these meetings.
