I am so excited to welcome you to the 2024-2025 school year! The first day of school is Tuesday, August 27, 2024. Our first day is a half day. Our start time is 8:30 AM. Parent Connection is a web-based service that gives parents the ability to access student data via the Internet. Parents use a confidential personal identification number (PIN) and password to view their student’s attendance, grades, assignments and other information online.

Registration” link at the top of the page.

● Click through each link confirming or changing any information and then click "submit and

Wayne-Westland Community Schools provides busing services to elementary students who reside over one (1) mile from school, and middle and high school students who live over one and one-half (1.5) miles from school are eligible for transportation services.

After the student's registration is completed or updated in MiStar ParentConnection and the dwelling meets the qualifications, if you want your child to ride the bus, you MUST check YES, or a bus route will NOT be assigned.

We respect that some appointments or obligations will require you to pick-up your child(ren) early from school. If you have an appointment and you must pick up your child early, please expect delays and please come before 2:45 pm. In the spirit of safety, our dismissal process involves all staff and it is very difficult to have staff get a student early from their classroom and bring them to the office between 2:45 and 3:20 pm. Please do not pick-up children between 2:45 and 3:20pm. This greatly affects our safe and efficient dismissal process. We do not have extra staff to easily get students from class prior to our 3:20 dismissal. Thank you for your continued support. Go Roadrunners!

We know that pets are a huge part of many families. However, please do not bring your pets to school. Student arrival time and dismissal time can be a very anxious time. Bringing your dog or cat when you are walking on campus to pick up your student can be very sensitive for some kids and adults. We do not want anyone accidently bitten or scratched. Safety first.

We love our volunteers! There will be many opportunities during the year to volunteer at school. **Reminder** All volunteers such as helping in the classroom or field trips are required to have a background check before helping with any events. It is free. Thank you. Volunteers must fill out a new background check every school year.

Does your student need medication administered during the day?

Parents must complete a medication form for any student medication at school.

We cannot administer any medication to students unless we have this form completed and on file at school. This includes prescriptions and over-the-counter medications such as aspirin, Rolaids, Benadryl...etc. Please call the main office (734-419-2720) if you have any questions.

Nut Free

• We are a “NUT FREE” school. We will always support the safety of our Roadrunners. As a result of a Roadrunner having a serious nut allergy condition, we are now officially a NUT FREE school. Any exposure to peanuts or nuts through contact or ingestion can cause a severe reaction. If your child has eaten peanuts, peanut butter, or nuts prior to coming to school, please be sure your child’s hands have been thoroughly washed prior to entering the school. It is important that no nuts or food items that contain nuts are brought into our school or buses. Thank you for your assistance in providing our students with a safe learning environment. Nut Free Snack Options Breakfast and lunch is free for all students: *Menu will be available very soon.

Fish and Shellfish Free School

• We are a fish and shellfish free school. We will always support the safety of ourRoadrunners. As a result of a couple Roadrunners having serious fish and shellfish allergies, we are officially a fish and shellfish free school. Do not bring fish and shellfish products to school such as tuna fish and sushi.

Throughout the year we conduct fire, tornado and lockdown drills to familiarize students and staff with the process of what we do during various safety situations. We have age appropriate conversations with students about safety scenarios and provide students with age appropriate instructions in order to keep students physically safe and emotionally safe.

• We practice safety drills to become really good at them. Safety first.

• If there is a fire, we need to evacuate the building so we get far away from the fire. It is highly unlikely that we will ever have a fire, but we practice to be prepared if a fire were to occur.

• If there is severe weather such as a tornado, we practice severe weather drills to be prepared if there is severe weather.

• A lockdown drill is just as important as a fire drill or tornado drill. A lockdown take cover drill helps us stay safe if someone were to gain access into our school to make bad choices. It is highly unlikely that this would ever happen, but we practice to make sure we stay safe in any situation.

• It is important in a safety drill that students are not talking and always listening to teachers/staff.

The purpose of this information is to act as a reminder to revisit safety discussions and review safety tips with your child(ren) at home. Student safety is our highest priority and we appreciate every one helping to keep each other safe. The intent of this communication is not to alarm children and families. The goal of this information is to provide tools for families and kids to feel safe and to be safe. Fortunately, we live in a society where most people are good-intentioned. However, there are some people in our society who take advantage of others and do bad things. For that reason, we need to be vigilant and cautious. If there were ever any reported stranger danger safety concerns in our Roosevelt-McGrath area, please know that the school would immediately send out a stranger danger email and voice message informing you of any safety concerns.

Here are some safety tip suggestions to help guide discussions with your children at home:

• Always walk with one or more fellow students when going to and from the bus stop or anywhere else.

• Do not walk alone.

• If a stranger approaches and attempts to have a conversation with you, do not respond to him or her. Don’t talk with them. By responding, you could encourage their actions.

• Do not accept anything from a stranger.

• Do not get in the vehicle of a stranger, regardless of what they tell you.

• In the event a stranger pursues you, go to the nearest door and knock loudly, and yell, if necessary. While we would not typically knock on the door of someone we do not know, when a stranger is pursuing, we must take every action to ensure safety. Keep in mind, when you approach someone’s door, the stranger has no idea whether you know the people living in that residence. Such action alone may deter the stranger and prompt them to leave the scene immediately.

• Think SAFETY first. Report any incident to your parents and/or school personnel, and most importantly, the police. Additionally, please know that any teacher, school staff member, school bus driver, Wayne Westland or city service vehicle may also be a safety resource during these events.

Birthdays and holidays are very important. We understand and respect that parents want to send things to classrooms to celebrate birthdays. We encourage families to send fun pencils, books, fun markers, stickers...etc. In the spirit of safety, do not send food items such as cupcakes and cookies to celebrate birthdays. We are a NUT FREE school. Thank you for supporting safety.

A reminder for our school community, Care Solace is a complimentary and confidential service provided by the Wayne-Westland Community School District. This service is FREE to students, families and staff. Care Solace helps connect individuals to mental health or substance abuse providers by locating a therapist that meets their specific needs. Note: Care Solace is not a crisis line. They will call providers for you, verify insurance, and even help you make an appointment. If you would like to use Care Solace to help you find a provider:

For those experiencing a suicidal crisis, please contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline by calling or texting 988 on your phone, or visit 988lifeline.org/chat/ to chat with a trained mental health professional, who can provide help.

Wayne County Health Department asked schools to share lice prevention strategies:

• Avoid head-to-head (hair-to-hair) contact during play and other activities at home, school, and elsewhere (sports activities, playground, slumber parties, camp)
• Do not share clothing such as hats, scarves, coats, sports uniforms, hair ribbons, or barrettes
• Do not share combs, brushes, or towels
• Disinfest combs and brushes used by an infested person by soaking them in hot water (at least 130°F) for 5–10 minutes
• Do not lie on beds, couches, pillows, carpets, or stuffed animals that have recently been in contact with an infested person
• Machine wash and dry clothing, bed linens, and other items that an infested person wore or used during the 2 days before treatment using the hot water (130°F) laundry cycle and the high heat drying cycle
• Clothing and items that are not washable can be dry-cleaned OR sealed in a plastic bag and stored for 2 weeks
• Vacuum the floor and furniture, particularly where the infested person sat or lay
• However, spending much time and money on housecleaning activities is not necessary to avoid reinfestation by lice or nits that may have fallen off the head or crawled onto furniture or clothing
• Do not use fumigant sprays or fogs; they are not necessary to control head lice and can be toxic if inhaled or absorbed through the skin
• To help control a head lice outbreak in a community, school, or camp, children can be taught to avoid activities that may spread head lice

The Health Department also reminds us that;

• Notices, emails and letters home about head lice are not the recommended guidance per CDC and MDHHS.
• Head lice, while a nuisance, is not a mandatory reportable condition or pathogen in the state of Michigan.

Unexcused Absences: Unexcused absences negatively impact your child's education. Absences without valid reasons will be considered unexcused, and appropriate actions may be taken per district policy.

Timely reporting of absences helps us maintain accurate attendance records and ensures that your child's absence is properly documented. Absences must be reported within 24 hours.

There are two convenient methods for reporting your child's absence to facilitate efficient communication and accurate attendance records.

• You can notify your child's school through the dedicated attendance line. Please leave a detailed message stating your child's name, grade, and reason for absence.

• You can report absences directly through MiStar, our secure online portal for student information. MiStar provides a user-friendly interface that allows you to submit absences.
