Good Sportsmanship
This month the students will have a classroom lesson on sportsmanship. Kids have a lot more fun playing games and sports if they practice good sportsmanship. They learn how to be a good sport from the adults in their lives, especially their parents and coaches. As soon as your child starts competing in sports, it’s important to be a good role model. Any teams your child plays on should have coaches that encourage good sportsmanship. Here are some suggestions to help promote good sportsmanship with your children.
Expose them Early: Encourage your child to start playing games at an early age, so they start understanding the concept of being winners and losers. You can try board games, bowling, sports, or even friendly competitions among family members.
Focus on Effort: Focus on the effort your child puts into the sport or activity they are participating in and not on the outcome of the game.
Focus on Fun: Tell your child everything they gain by playing a team sport, like new and improved skills, new friends and teammates, and new attitudes to help throughout life. You should emphasize the fact that they are playing to have fun, get exercise and build team spirit.
Encourage Others: Team sports work best when each member supports the team. Praise teammates or others you are playing a game with for what they have done well and encourage them when they make a mistake or are losing. Parents can model this while playing games with their children to help them learn this skill.
Teach them to Play Fair: An important part of being a good sport is always following the rules and playing the game to the best of your ability. Encourage your child to play by the rules and model that skill for your children.
Parents and coaches who emphasize good sportsmanship help young athletes learn respect for others and self-control. These skills can help them manage other parts of their lives, and help them develop into mature, respectful, and successful young adults.

Watch D.O.G.S.
Our WatchD.O.G.S. program is in full swing! “Dads” (or dad-like figures) who are interested in signing up to volunteer for a full or half day should contact Angela Bender (abender@otsegops.org) or Jen Knight (jknight@otsegops.org) via email to schedule a date.
When you volunteer, you will receive a schedule for the day that allows you to help out in different classrooms doing a wide range of activities (reading a story, working with a child 1:1, playing a game with a small group). You will also have scheduled time on the playground and lunchroom to interact with students and be a positive role model for them. We need a current background check on file before you can volunteer.
Sign up for Mrs. Knight's Remind!
