South Campus Sentinel
DECEMBER 2024
A Note From the Principal
December is finally here and as we prepare for a change in season, our hope is that all of our families enjoyed the end of November with loved ones and a warm meal. Between our Turkey Trot donations and our caring Food Service Team, we were able to feed over 25 of our most-in-need families.
A big THANK YOU goes out to those who were able to come out to our 6th Annual Thanksgiving Parade here on campus. It's always a hit and this year we added our very own Rock Band, led by our music teacher, Mr. Jacob.
It's such a wonderful time of the year. I love celebrating holidays and seeing the excitement and energy in our learners & staff. It's a struggle to imagine how close we are to our Arizona version of winter. The days are shorter already and the cooler weather is noticeable, especially in the mornings. I want to remind all families to send your little ones dressed in layers and for the weather. Please remember to label your child's belongings with their name so they can be returned if misplaced.
We have a supportive community with wonderful parents and I am grateful every day for the opportunity to work with you all...your babies are my babies and they are in good hands! Thank you South Campus families for all you do. You make my role as the principal a joy through your commitment to your children and our school. I wish you all a wonderful month of December as well as a safe & joyous holiday season.

Attendance Matters...
August-November Attendance Data
Our goal for attendance is 95% and every day counts. Here are 10 Facts about School Attendance from Attendanceworks.org:
- Absenteeism in the first month of school can predict poor attendance throughout the school year Half the students who miss 2-4 days in September go on to miss nearly a month of school!
- The most recent federal data show that in the 2020-21 school year, at least 14.7 million students nationwide were chronically absent This means that chronic absence almost doubled for more than 8 million students pre-COVID, who were missing so many days of school that they were academically at risk
- Absenteeism and its ill effects start early
- Poor attendance can influence whether children read proficiently by the end of 3rd grade or be held back.
- By 6th grade chronic absence becomes a leading indicator that a student will drop out of high school.
- Research shows that missing 10% of the school year, or about 18 days, negatively affects a student's academic performance. That's just two days a month & that's knows as chronic absence.
- Students who live in communities with high levels of poverty are 4x more likely to be chronically absent than others often for reasons beyond their control.
- When students improve their attendance rates, they improve their academic prospects and chances for graduating.
- Attendance improves when schools engage students and parents in positive ways and when schools provide mentors for chronically absent students.
- Most school districts and states don't look at all the right data to improve school attendance. In Arizona, we track excused AND unexcused absences.
