It's been a successful and enjoyable fall thus far from academics to the arts to fall sports.

In academics, the 1st quarter finished last month, and once again our kids continue to prove themselves in the classroom. 60% of our student body made honor roll (all As and Bs), and 34% made exemplary honor roll (all As)...quite impressive.

In the arts, visual arts students recently competed in the Biennial Regional High School Junior and Senior Juried Competition among 35 other tri-state schools. Performing arts students just completed three amazing performances of Peter Pan (4 including last Friday's performance for our elementary students). It was another incredible show with talented kids and outstanding direction from Mrs. Zengerling and Mrs. Tanner.

In athletics, both boys and girls soccer, girls cross country, and football won their respective sectionals. Girls cross country won regional as well and became the first cross country team in school history to qualify for State where they finished 13th overall. Football continues their IHSAA tournament journey this Friday at Evansville Memorial having just won the program's 21st sectional title this past Friday.

Finally, as the holiday season approaches, our students and student-organizations are involved with local pantries, Toys for Tots, etc. always seeking ways to give back to this community. In the end, all of the successes are wonderful, but it is in these philanthropic efforts that our students shine the most.

Matthew “Miller” Small certainly fits the profile of Student of the Month and ECHS is pleased to introduce him. Miller is the son of Chris and Kerrie Kitts. He is the Student Council President, For the Kids Night President, Executive member of Student Ambassadors and Senior Scholarship, Swim Team Captain, a member of the National Honor Society, Track Team and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

East Central Student Council sponsor, Dr. Bettina Rose-Ronnebaum had many great things to say about Miller. “He is the EC StuCo President, and I have been honored to work with both him and his leadership team this school year. He has done a wonderful job leading the school in both spirit and philanthropy while holding on to EC traditions. Miller is an exceptional young man who would be a great addition anywhere, or to anything, he puts his focus. Miller has certainly earned the title of Student of the Month for all he has done for EC and our school community at large!” Senior class sponsor, Mrs. Pam Donohue confirmed the character of Miller noting, “He leads by example and by doing, not by telling everyone what to do. I have enjoyed watching his leadership skills come alive in the last two years. He is a terrific young man and it has been an honor to work with him.”

Miller plans to attend Jacksonville State University in Alabama next fall where he plans to major in Emergency Management. He would like to thank his parents for who he is today; “Their endless support has given me the confidence in the work I do.” His words of advice for underclassmen, “Max out your capability. Be as involved as you can. Our school has so many amazing groups of people and it would be a wasted opportunity not to be involved.”

Maxwell Koehler exhibits the qualities of a hard working East Central High School Student of the Month! Max is the son of Mike and Katie Koehler. He is a 4-year member of the ECHS tennis team and National Honor Society. Max enjoys volunteering at Shady Nook, playing baseball, watching his younger siblings play sports and hanging out with his friends. He is a loyal Cincinnati Bengals fan!

Mrs. Lisa Tupper, ECHS Guidance Counselor shared, “Max is on track to graduate with both the Indiana Academic Honors and Technical Honors Diplomas. He is a high honors student who is working to complete the Electrical Trades program at Southeastern Career Center in Versailles.” Mrs. Tupper indicates that “it is a rare occasion that a student earns both the Academic and Technical Honors diploma through a skilled trade, hands-on experience at SCC.” Mrs. Tupper often uses Max as a student role model for other students who plan to transition directly into the workforce after graduation. His instructor Scott Iceberg states that “Max always shows up to the lab on time with the tools and willingness to learn. Max is also very good at interpreting the National Electric Code. Though Max is only in high school, I can already see the kind of man he will become. I am proud to say that I was a part of helping Max in a trade that he is interested in. I am sure someday his employer will say the same.”

Max plans to join an electrical union to pursue a career as a licensed electrician. He would like to thank his parents for shaping him into who he is today. He is extremely thankful for their support and everything they have done for him. Max shares his advice for underclassmen, “Four years seems like a long time but it flies by. Make the most of every moment and have fun.”

The Sunman-Dearborn Foundation Endowment Gift keeps book bills to $25 for the Technology Fee or $50 if you elected to purchase the Chromebook Protection Plan. Now also posted to PowerSchool are any outstanding fees for 2021-2022 including Missing Textbooks and Chromebook Damage. If you paid the 2022-2023 fees your PowerSchool account should have a zero balance. If your account shows a balance due there may be an outstanding amount from the 2021-2022 school year. Scheduling process for the 2023-24 school year will begin in December.

• Class meetings with current 8th-11th graders will be held December 8th to review the registration process for next year’s classes.

• During the month of January guidance counselors will begin meeting with students individually to discuss registration, diploma types, ICC and pathway requirements.

• May 9th: Target date to release 2022-23 schedules to students. Last day to change schedules for 2022-23 will be May 25th.

Seniors:

Remember, the FAFSA is now open until the April 15th deadline for Indiana. Students should follow up with counselors with admission issues or concerns and they will assist with contacting colleges with questions particular to the students’ needs.

Seniors are allowed two college visit days to explore or finalize colleges of choice. Deadlines are quickly approaching for college applications and guidance counselors are always available to assist as needed. December 1st is another deadline for many college applications.

Seniors who are undecided about what to study after high school are encouraged to connect with Ivy Tech Community College’s Associate Accelerated Program (ASAP). This program helps high school graduates earn an Associate’s Degree in just 11 months and prepares them to transfer to a four-year college to earn their Bachelor's Degree.

Juniors:

SAT School Day: New required test for all juniors in the state of Indiana is the SAT that will be given during the school day on March 1, 2023. This test is free and used by the state for school accountability. The benefit of the test is that students will be able to use this score report for college applications. More information will be provided as the March date approaches.

Sophomores and Freshman:

Scheduling will be completed by the end of January for the following year with changes accepted until the end of the year. Students should be focusing on grades and career/college exploration. Once sophomore PSAT scores are received, results will be reviewed in the classroom along with additional supports for SAT/ACT test prep.

November 22nd the Southeastern Career Center will hold a presentation for all sophomores to review programs available to them for their junior and senior years. The website to review prior to this presentation is https://www.sccusa.org/. Sophomores will also be invited to attend a field trip to the Career Center on December 8th.

Ivy Tech College Connection Coach

For students working on achieving the Indiana College Core and needing to pick up courses, Ivy Tech has multiple eight-week sessions throughout the school year. These are online, virtual, in-person, or blended classes; students choose whatever works best. As an East Central High School student, there is potentially a full scholarship for these courses, and books are potentially free.

Save Time, Save Money, Get a Degree

The Associate Accelerated Program (ASAP) is an 11-month program, which is student focused and designed to support, encourage, and mentor students throughout their first year of college. This program is great for students who prefer smaller class sizes and who prefer to be on a first name basis with their professors. ASAP works with students to build confidence before transferring to a 4-year university to get their bachelor’s degree or going into the workforce. Applications are now being accepted for the next cohort. East Central FFA Nursery/Landscape Team Competes in National Event

The East Central FFA Nursery/Landscape Team represented their school and the state of Indiana in the National FFA Nursery/Landscape Career Development Event on Wednesday October 26th at the 95th National FFA Convention & Expo in Indianapolis. Kubota Tractor Corporation and Haviland Plastic Products sponsor the event. CDEs and help students develop the abilities to think critically, communicate clearly and perform effectively in a competitive job market.

The team consisted of; (Photo L to R): Hadrian Emley, Lewis Darringer,Caleb Harper, and Bryson Dossenback. Roy Johnson is the chapter advisor.

The Nursery/Landscape CDE consisted of the following events and skill practicums: Plant, disease, pest and equipment identification; written and verbal customer assistance, general knowledge exam, plant propagation/potting as well as skill practicums including pruning, drainage and grading, plant design layout and surveying skills.

The team placed in the Silver Emblem category placing 21st overall out of 43 teams.

The National FFA Organization provides leadership, personal growth and career success training through agricultural education to over 700,000 student members who belong to one of 8,630 local FFA chapters throughout the U.S., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. What’s Happening in Prep for College and Careers?

This year in Prep for College and Careers students have been working hard to plan their futures whether it be in college, in a trade, serving in the military or whatever path their future may hold. To demonstrate their proficiency in this class all students participate in a project titled, “A Day in My Life 2032”. In this project students will take the information they have learned about themselves and research they have completed and compile it into a well documented plan for their future 10 years from now. Throughout the past month students in engineering classes have been carrying out a number of different types of projects.

Introduction to Engineering and Design, has been learning how to use Autodesk Inventor and have created multiple 3D parts. They are currently working on a toy car project where they have to create the wheels, axles, and the body then be able to assemble the cars.

Civil Engineering class has spent the majority of the last few weeks working on learning how to use Revit Architectural Software. They have completed a tutorial by creating a two story building, and a shed. Later in the year they will be planning, designing, and creating their own residential house on the software as well.

Computer-aided-Design class has been working on multiple parts and projects on Autodesk Inventor. One of the projects is to create an East Central related key chain that they will get to 3D print. Another project that we have been working on is creating Automoblox cars on Inventor. The students are working in teams to create the individual parts and then they will learn how to assemble them on the software to look exactly like the actual cars.

English 10 students in Mr. Meiners’ class will be learning the elements of research and writing while studying contemporary topics. Students will complete an argumentative research paper over a topic of their choice. After completing the research paper, students will debate other students over the topics they researched.

After studying rhetoric, rhetorical devices, and logical fallacies, Mrs. Goodpaster’s English 10 students are launching into their argumentative papers using electronic tools including Google Keep to help with organization and note cards. Once their papers are completed, we will be watching "The Great Debaters" in preparation for their final project.

Mrs. Goodpaster’s seniors are, after reading some Frankenstein, getting ready to launch into a novel written by "The Queen of Mystery, Agatha Christie. While reading And Then There Were None, students will have the opportunity to predict who the killer is and who the next victim will be, analyze the characters and their reaction to guilt, and try to use logic and reasoning to solve the great mystery before it is revealed to them.

This month, Ms. Huber’s English 9 students will be reading To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. We have been researching Harper Lee's life and learning about some of the events surrounding the novel, so her students are excited to start reading the book this month. Ms. Huber loves this book, so she’s looking forward to hearing new perspectives and ideas from her students as they discover the story for the first time.

Mrs. Cecil’s English 9 students are reading John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men.

Mrs. Tucker’s English 9 classes recently read Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. As a culminating activity, they completed a Body Biography Project that incorporated quotes from the text, character descriptions, and other elements of the novel.

In Mrs. Ketcham’s Honors English 12, students are preparing to learn about King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table by going on a “field trip” to King Arthur's Digital Museum. They explored peer-created exhibits focusing on the essential question: “How have the legends of King Arthur influenced our culture?”

Students in Dr. Rose-Ronnebaum’s English 11 are currently wrapping up their American poetry projects. They had to choose one American author's poem from 1400-1900 to research, analyze, and present to the class. They compared the poems to 21st-century music lyrics to show the timelessness of good prose.

Intro to Culinary Arts & Hospitality

Students in Intro to Culinary Arts have been busy exploring different kitchen tools and equipment. We are still practicing different cooking methods and are starting to use different small appliances in our labs, like blenders for smoothies and waffle irons to make waffles. As always, during labs we are demonstrating proper measuring skills and kitchen safety.

Advanced Nutrition and Wellness

Students in Advanced Nutrition and Wellness are reviewing the MyPlate guidelines and exploring the essential nutrients. We have had a chance to even try some new foods through some lab experiences. Many students were surprised by how much they enjoyed the spaghetti squash lab.

FACS Newsletter-November 2022

Introduction to Fashion and Textiles Students have been studying about how to use color and what colors and seasons of colors are the most flattering on them. They have also learned how to lay out and cut a pajama pants pattern. They will begin sewing their pajama pants this week.

Advanced Child Development Students have been discussing who can deliver a baby and the different places to have a baby. The students have also been taking home the Real Care Baby Simulators for the past 2 weeks and are discovering how to care for an infant.

Advanced Fashion and Textiles class has finished their scrap lap quilts, which will be given to the elderly at a local nursing home. We will be working on simple crafts to sell at the North Dearborn Craft Show in December.

Education Professions I students are currently studying about school are governed by the state. They also watched a local school board meeting to understand how decisions are made at the local level.

ProStart 1:

The ProStart 1 Culinary Arts & Hospitality students started October by finishing up learning all about the Hospitality & Foodservice Industry. They studied the various segments of the Hospitality Industry as well as the history of foodservice, inventions, entrepreneurs, and chefs that have shaped the industry over time. The students completed 2 labs where they made recipes from various time periods in our history. They also practiced their measuring & weighing skills in a lab and each made their own small batch cookie recipe. At the end of October students made Caramel Apples & learned all about the art of making caramel! Next we will move onto food safety & complete Servsafe® training. As a part of this course students are required to complete the ServSafe® Training and Certification Program from the National Restaurant Association. This training provides students with the knowledge, skills, and abilities they will need to thrive in the foodservice industry. The ServSafe® Training and Certification Program provides students with the knowledge, skills, and abilities they need to serve food safely. Food handlers in many states, including Indiana, are required by law to have a ServSafe® Certification.

ProStart 2:

The ProStart 2 Advanced Culinary students have been learning about stocks, sauces, & soups this semester. In the beginning of October they learned all about the 5 mother sauces & created all of the sauces, as well as some of their derivatives. These students also made pies & donated them to the St. Leon Oktoberfest Pie Auction event to help raise funds for the local legion. In the middle of October we moved onto learning all about soups! We started off by identifying the 2 basic kinds of soup and started making some “clear soups.” In the culinary lab students created a Chicken Tortilla Soup and a French Onion Soup. They got to use the new Salamander broilers for the first time while making the French Onion soup to melt the cheese over it. Next, students completed a “Ramen Challenge.” They had to create a ramen soup using 2 packs of ramen noodles and various other fresh ingredients. This was a cool lab for students to practice their creativity as well as their knife skills. At the end of October students made Caramel Apples & learned all about the art of making caramel!

Catering:

The Advanced Culinary Arts ProStart 1 & 2 students do various catering events throughout the school year. They recently made boxed lunches for the Sunman Dearborn Education Association teachers union. They also just catered a very nice meal for the Southern Indiana Superintendents’ Club on Nov 3rd in the new natatorium area! Upcoming catering events include a Dessert Reception for the Girls Soccer Team Banquet in November and the Swim Team’s sectional dinner in February! This is such a great opportunity for our students to use their skills to practice real world industry skills!

FCCLA-These students have been extremely busy the past few weeks. A hayride was held in mid October with FFA so that our members could enjoy a fun activity. State officers Mak Kelly and Alexandra Seubert attended the Indiana IACTE Conference and shared information about starting an FCCLA Chapter.

The state officers led the Middle School Fally Rally at the Hendricks County Fairgrounds where they led over 80 middle school students in leadership and FCCLA Activities.

We also participated in the Trunk or Treat at North Dearborn Elementary School were we won second place for our best decorated Trunk!

Our local chapter members also carved pumpkins with the elderly at North Dearborn Village where we served Homemade Chicken Noodle Soup, brownies or apple crisp ala mode. The residents enjoyed the entire event!

Lastly the East Central FCCLA officers set and served a wonderful meal that was prepared by our Culinary Students to the Southern Indiana Superintendent’s Club. All of our students did an amazing job! We are so proud of them!

On November 4, 2022 East Central High School art students participated in the Biennial Regional High School Junior and Senior Juried Competition. This competition was hosted by the Xavier University Department of Art. The competition was open to any artistic media including but not limited to painting, sculpture, graphic design, drawing, printmaking, fibers, ceramics, photography, digital imagery, and jewelry. There were 35 High Schools that participated in this competition from Ohio, Kentucky, and southern Indiana. Each high school could only submit two artworks to represent their school. Leah Kubitz and Madge Flowers represented East Central High School. Three awards were given to this juried competition.

In other art news,

What would you choose if you were asked to pick one item or person that represents current pop culture? Around sixty years ago, Andy Warhol created artwork that represented the consumerist cultures in his generation. The students in Digital Design: Photoshop classes created artwork that shows their interpretation of current pop culture. Each student picked an item/a person that represents their pop culture, and they used varied techniques in Photoshop to recreate the textures and the styles of Andy Warhol’s artwork. Here is some of their work.

Students in Sculpture have spent several weeks creating custom fit plaster masks. We discussed various reasons people might wear a mask. Some of those reasons include cultural ceremonies or dances, transformative purposes in theatrical or movie performances, and even as a means of protection. Each student had ultimate creative freedom to create their own mask or to recreate one they’ve seen. Mixing the correct ratio of plaster and water while being patient during the setting process was imperative. Some created wire armatures which were then wrapped in plaster strips and attached to their initial facial form. Later these armatures were smoothed out or built up by adding plaster, and eventually refined through sanding with files or sandpaper. Others chose to paint their mask based on a pattern or design that interested them.

In painting class, students finished a watercolor painting of an animal. Students experimented with different watercolor techniques such as flat wash, graded wash, splatter/spray, salt, and ceran wrap techniques. The students further developed their watercolor painting skills with transparent layers and texture of their animal.

In Drawing I class, students were working on creating a drawing on scratchboard. The students scratched away the ink to reveal the white underneath. Scratchboard drawing is a great way for students to understand mark making and the importance of highlights. Students had to think in reverse to pull the image from the surface.

In October and early November students learned about the importance of Dia de los Muertos in

Mexico. This holiday occurs the night of November 1st to November 2nd. The family members

of loved ones who passed away go to their loved one’s gravesites and remember their special

angels. A good depiction of this holiday is the movie Coco. Students in various Spanish classes created skull magnets to help them remember the importance of this holiday. The skulls and skeletons symbolize Dia de los Muertos.

Our Algebra 1 teachers, Mr. Bentley, Mr. Loveless, Mr. Harris and Ms. Jansing, have the students working hard on graphing linear equations. They have learned how to graph using tables, x and y intercepts, and using the slope and y-intercept. The students have also been solving and graphing inequalities as well as absolute value inequalities.

Students enrolled in Algebra l Lab complete weekly assignments on a curriculum-based program called ALEKS. Credits can be earned for this course by completing those problems on ALEKS, but students are also encouraged to work on math assignments for Algebra l. This can be done in the following ways: 1) ask questions of the instructor to provide examples; 2) have the completed work checked for accuracy; 3) allow the instructor to assist in preparation for quizzes/tests. Students using these opportunities to improve will equal a successful performance in Algebra l. Mr. Loveless, Ms. Jansing and Mrs. Rowland all teach Algebra 1 lab and hope the students use the class to be the best math student they can be!

The drama club presented Peter Pan this past weekend. The students did an amazing job, and had so much fun as pirates, lost boys and Indians. Thanks to all who came out and supported these amazing students.

The choir department will be performing at the Lawrenceburg Holiday Expo on Friday, Nov. 18th from 6:00p-7:00p. Tickets are $5.00 at the door.

There are so many exciting things happening in the PE and Health classes. Check out our Athletic Trainer, Sammy Hendricks, volunteering her time at Beacon to present career day to ECMS students. In her classroom at ECHS, her students had fun creating different types of fractures out of play-doh, while also studying soft tissue injuries and wound care.

Some PE classes show off their skills in competitive volleyball games and relay races, while others work on their speed and agility. Callie Bentley led the pacer test with an outstanding score of 84, and Just Dance is a favorite for cardio day. The students loved showing off their “moves like Jagger”.

As we approach cooler temperatures, the science department continues to heat up with engaging activities for all students. Here is just a sample of what has taken place during the last couple of weeks.

Earth science students discovered that wind, water, gravity, and glaciers are agents of erosion that have drastically altered landforms on Earth. They also have assessed how humans have been a contributing factor to these erosional forces and what can be done to reduce/prevent future devastating effects of mass movements.

Physics classes are combining Newton's Laws and the principles of momentum.

Integrated Chemistry/Physics classes just finished up power and energy and are currently working towards applying the concept to simple machines such as levers, pulleys.

AP Biology is working on discovering the importance of ATP and enzymes as well as the impact of pH on enzyme functions.

Anatomy students were taking part in Histology Lab Part 2, where they are responsible for identifying nine different tissues and knowing where each tissue is located in the body and what its major function is.

Biology I classes are completing a lab covering Photosynthesis and the various cycles that take place in a plant's chloroplast. They are specifically filling out the parts of the Calvin cycle, which is the major cycle in photosynthesis to create sugars.

Chemistry I students this month worked on comparing binding forces and properties of different compounds. They are now finishing up measuring with significant figures in the lab and will apply some math and lab skills as they identify different percent compositions within materials.

Biomedical Science students are building tissue box holders that describe the process of the chain of infection and how infectious diseases become transmitted between people.

AP Chemistry students just finished up learning about spectroscopy which culminated in a lab where students determine the amount of aspirin present in a variety of different medications.

Chemistry II students finished up molecular geometry and molecular polarity. Students will now apply those concepts to intermolecular attractions and physical properties of matter.

In Mr. Stonefield's Economics classes, students are currently studying business organizations. Next week, students will complete a class project where they will create a realistic, appropriate business proposal that will represent the various business organizations that exist in society today.

In Mr. Owen's American History class, students are wrapping up their examination of the War of 1812, Jacksonian Democracy, and the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. Ask your student what this man (John Marshall) did to amplify the power of the U.S. Supreme Court.

In European History, we are studying the Age of Exploration and the circumstances surrounding the English Civil War. Ask your student why professional artists tend to admire the work of Diego Velazquez so much - particularly the following painting:

In Mr. Reynolds' Geography classes, they are preparing for their USA Test next week. Students must be able to identify:

• All 50 states
• All 50 state capitals
• Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, and Gulf of Mexico
• Rocky Mountains, Appalachian Mountains, Great Plains, Mississippi River
• All 5 Great Lakes

Boys and Girls Soccer

5 Trojans represented the boys and girls teams at the Indiana state district games this past weekend and a total of 7 of them receiving awards.

The awards given were:

Girl's District 3 First Team and All-State Second Team: Olivia Hopper

Girl's District 3 Second Team: Erika Wells and Lexi Watkins

Top Team player award: Ellie Hill

Boy's District 3 First Team and All State First Team: JT Roden

Boy's District 3 First Team and All-State Third Team: Joey Black

Top Team Player award: Adam Miller

Football

Football Continues to advance in their play. EC will play Evansville Memorial Friday, November 11th at 7:30 E.S.T.

Cross Country

Congratulations to our Girls Cross Country Team on placing 13th at State. They were seeded to place 16-17th but were pleasantly surprised when they were called out for their 13th place. What a phenomenal group of athletes. They are matched by even more phenomenal coaches in long time coach Steve Cotherman and Fr. Meyer. Congratulations on your season!

Girls Basketball

Girls Basketball are off to a great start with a 2-0 record thus far. They are currently ranked 8th in the IBCA Top-20 Poll. Two of their players have committed to play at a collegiate level. Josie Trabel (Wofford University) and Laney Baker (Thomas More). Congratulations ladies!

Boys Basketball

Boys Basketball started this week with tryouts and are looking forward to a great competitive season. Their season opener will be Thursday, November 17th at home.

Swimming & Diving

Swimming and Diving will have their season opener on Thursday, November 17, 2022. Plan to come watch them in the new Natatorium.

Wrestling

Wrestling has been working hard in the off season to come back with a strong team this winter. With a great turnout at pre -season workouts they decided to extend them to get more practice time in. They will begin with a red/black scrimmage on Tuesday, November 22.

We love our student section! Thank you to all those who support our athletes week after week. Our athletes love hearing you cheer from the stands. We hope you to continue that strong presence at our winter sports. We encourage you to attend a new sporting event this winter.
