NMS Library Newsletter- Winter 2019

Greetings!

The NMS library has been a busy place this school year! We have seen an increase in visits from teachers and students which has resulted in a rise of our circulation numbers. Book orders continue to arrive bringing us new titles and old favorites, and First Chapter Friday read alouds are being held weekly. Below are some of the highlights of what's been happening in the NMS library.

Norwell Cares Continues...

I am happy to be working with the high school librarian, Jennifer Pratt, the Norwell Public Library, and the Council on Aging to organize a wonderful intergenerational book discussion scheduled for next month. Students and parents are invited to read I Will Always Write Back by Caitlin Alifirenka and Martin Ganda, and sign up to participate in our discussion on March 19th. This wonderful story about kindness and friendship is certain to inspire a sense of global citizenship for all who participate. Space in this program is limited and filling up fast! Students who would like to participate should sign up in the NMS library. Parents or community members who would like to be involved should contact the public library or the Council on Aging.

Book Tasting...

Thank you to Ms. Kinslow and her 7th and 8th grade ELA classes for visiting the library last week for a book tasting! These classes will be participating in a spring book challenge compiled of titles tailored to their interests. Students had an opportunity to sample some of the books included in this challenge which is made up of eight different genres. Graphic novels and historical fiction appeared to be early favorites. Students will begin voting for their favorite titles later in the spring.

WWII Book Club...

A number of sixth grade students have been participating in a WWII book club which gathers in the Community Room during lunch. The group typically meets Monday-Thursday each week. We are currently reading Under the Blood Red Sun by Graham Salisbury. This work of historical fiction is set just before the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. The students in this group are extremely enthusiastic to learn about WWII and I look forward to their questions and our discussions each day.

Tweet to an Author!

Do you have a question for an author about a book they have written? A character they have created? A sequel you are awaiting? Stop by the library to pick up a Tweet to an Author form. We will reach out to the author and try to get a response to your question!

Forms are available in the library or in Mrs. Whitt's classroom.

Library Shelfie Day

Students celebrated Library Shelfie day in January by dropping by the library to take a selfie with a favorite book. Those who participated were entered into a raffle for a Barnes and Noble gift card. Congratulations to our winner, Danielle Cox! Special thanks to Ms. Johnston for suggesting this fantastic way to celebrate the love of reading!

NMS Book Challenge...

There have been almost 500 books logged by students for the NMS Book Challenge. This reading challenge will continue through May, and students are encouraged to keep reading and logging their selections. Those who read ten or more books will be invited to attend our celebration in June. As a reminder, students can access the book tracker log and list of titles by visiting the NMS Library webpage.

2019 Book Awards...

On January 28th, the American Library Association announced the recipients of the 2019 Youth Media Awards. This event is basically the Academy Awards for books! We live streamed the ceremony in the library and were both excited and surprised by some of the winners.
