Principal's Corner
Ponderings from the Principal's Desk
There is so much in today's readings that ask one thing of us ... to love. "Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you." Lk 6:27
Loving others, even those we like, is not always easy. This is what we are called to do by Christ. Are you finding it hard to "love your enemy" or someone who has wronged you? Perhaps today you can take the first step in exploring how to let go of the anger and hurt and work towards forgiveness.
Accolades and Achievements:
I-Read Performance Recognition
St. Louis Catholic School will once again be recognized at the Department of Education Fall Literacy Celebration for those schools whose students' performance was 95% pass or higher. Way to go third grade!
Teachers Completing Science of Reading
In a letter from Dr. Katie Jenner, some of our teachers were recognized for completing the science of reading modules from Marian University and the Indiana Learning Lab last spring. In her words, "The completion of these modules is no easy feat, and requires a great level of discipline, time management, and genuine passion for learning ... all qualities that make a great teacher even greater. We had three teachers on our staff complete the modules, Mrs. Jan Narwold, Mrs. Mary Beth Linville, and Mrs. Jessica Laker. Congratulations!
We also had other teachers complete the 80 course through Keys to Literacy already. This is not an easy feat either as those that have completed it also had to spend seven full days of being present online for the virtual coursework presentations. Teachers who have finished this course are Mrs. Rebecca Hardebeck, Mrs. Theresa Swain, and Mrs. Kristina Brooks. Hats off for your determination.
NWEA results
Our K-2 students are moving through the first round of NWEA benchmark testing. Grades 1 & 2 have completed the ELA portion and will finish the math portion this week. Just an overall shout out to the kids as their group performance. The second grade students had an average RIT score of 188 in comparison to the national average of 172 on the ELA portion. In math, the class average RIT score was 192 in comparison to the national RIT average that was 174. Our first grade had an ELA RIT average of 171 and the national average RIT was 155.
New Server Training
There will be Server Training for new servers in grades 4 and up on Thursday, September 19 from 3:00pm - 4:15pm in the church. Students will be given the forms and guidelines at the training. This is only for those students who have never served before.
HALLOW coming to our classrooms & student devices
Thanks to a generous donor St. Louis staff and students will have access to the many wonderful tools of HALLOW. Our teachers are hooked up now and the next step is to get it out to our students. If you are not familiar with the Hallow App or website, we hope you explore a little bit or a lot with your student.
Festival Gratitude
Thank you to our students and families who have pitched in with items for baskets, patiently waited at dismissal and drop off times, and pitched in to help set up tables and chairs. It all makes a difference! Hope you also have time to come enjoy the "Adult Night" Saturday or the Church Festival itself on Sunday.
Super Sunday Bingo Volunteers
Save the date and make plans to chip in as we prepare for our next Super Sunday Bingo on October 20th. Many hands make light work and this event definitely takes many hands. Look for information coming out soon on how you can help. This is the largest school fundraiser and is so super organized that those volunteering really simply need to show up.
No Bus Service
Our next day without bus service is Monday, September 23rd. We will handle pick-up and drop off in the same manner as last time the only difference will be that we will have our afternoon PreK parents parked for pick-up in their normal pick-up location.

The Sacrament of Baptism
The fifth grade students took a deeper dive into the sacrament of Baptism this week. Fr. Suresh shared with the students the prayers said at Baptism, the individuals who are involved in the sacrament, and the items used during Baptism. He also discussed the details of the ceremony from start to finish.
Students had the opportunity to say a reading and to stand in place as godparents, as well as be the one getting "baptized." (Disclaimer: no one was actually Baptized during the instruction). This was a fun way to bring to what we are learning to real life.
2024 Veteran's Day Invitation

Egg Towers
The eighth graders had to design walls for Humpty Dumpty (a raw egg) to sit upon. The wall had to be at least 10 in. tall, 4 in. long, and 2 in. wide. Their egg had to sit on the wall for at least 10 seconds. The only materials they had to build with were notecards and masking tape. All towers were successful, but very different. The students learned that there can be many iterations to solve a problem, and yet be successful. We discussed strengths and areas where our walls could be improved.
Archery info - grades 4th - 8th
St. Louis Archery (NASP Program) is going to start up again soon. We plan to begin the season the
Tuesday after Fall break (October 15 th ) and run the season through our last tournament on February 8 th . We plan to have one practice a week on Tuesday nights and participate in 6-8 tournaments. We may offer one additional night for those that want extra practice depending on interest. Final practice times will be determined by participation levels. We will be competing in the Elementary Division (Grades 4 and 5) as well as the Middle School Division (Grades 6,7, and 8).
NASP is a structured archery program for all kids to enjoy and we would encourage all students to
consider joining us. No prior archery experience is needed. We will teach them. The club fees for this
year will be $50 to help offset equipment and tournament fees. We will also be hosting 3 tournaments at St. Louis to help raise funds for the program.
We will have an informational meeting Tuesday September 24 at 6 pm in the Old Gym. Please encourage your kids to sign up. If you have any questions feel free to reach out to me via email or cell phone. My email is robertdking623@gmail.com and my cell phone is 812-212-3665.

Youth Cardiac Screening
The Southeastern Indiana YMCA is hosting a cardiac screening Friday, October 11, from 8 am-4 pm for kids ages 12 and up. The cost for this screening is only $15 thanks to the generosity of Giving Hearts a Hand. There is a flyer below with additional information for anyone that might be interested in signing their child up for this screening.
Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is a life-threatening emergency that happens when the heart stops beating. It happens in people of all ages, including kids, and comes on with no warning. It’s NOT a heart attack – it’s a structural or electrical issue with the heart. SCA can be fatal if it’s not treated immediately, but the best way to protect your child is through testing to determine risk for SCA.
The Southeastern Indiana YMCA in conjunction with Giving Hearts a Hand is offering low-cost, $15 screenings at the Y on Friday, October 11, from 8 am-4 pm. The screenings are sponsored by the MCORE Foundation, a nationally-recognized nonprofit dedicated to preventing SCA in youth and young adults through education, screening, and research.
The screenings are for kids ages 12 and up. Each test lasts around 10-12 minutes.
To sign up for a screening, please visit https://www.mcorefoundation.org/scheduler_schedule/event/118925/?20240904154041

BMS XC at Rising Sun 4-Way 9/5/2024
The Bulldogs traveled to Rising Sun to compete in a 4-Way meet against the Shiners, the Jac-Cen-Del Eagles, and the Milan Indians on Thursday, September 5. The teams faced the most challenging conditions of the year thus far, battling the heat and a hilly course. This did not deter the dogs from dominating and coming away with wins by both the boys and girls teams.
Ava Wade was the meet champ on the girls side and she was followed closely by Elia Wade in 2nd, Ana Shane 3rd, Emmalynn Allgeier 4th, Aubrey Weberding in 7th, Sydney Britton in 8th, and Bailey Feldmann in 9th place for the varsity team. Girls JV team members also earning ribbons by placing in the top 20 were Audrey Dieckmann in 10th place, Alyssa Cummings in 13th, Annabel Eckstein in 16th, Myka Perry 17th, and Addie Cummings in 20th. The girls had a team score of 16 while Rising Sun had 42. Milan and Jac-Cen-Del did not have complete teams.
For the boys, Cael Luhman was the meet champ. Wyatt Essick was next for the Bulldogs finishing 3rd overall, followed by Timothy Quillin in 5th place, Coleman West in 6th, Miles Lawrence in 8th, Duncan Fish 9th, and Lucas Gadberry in 10th to round out the varsity members. Other Bulldogs placing in the top 20 and also earning ribbons were Gavin Linville in 11th place, Luke Raver in 12th, Salvador Schutte 13, Nathaniel Fuentes 16th, Sam Patterson 17th, Alex Kaiser 18th, and Grayson Parcell in 19th. The boys team bested Rising Sun by only scoring 23 points to their 31 points. Milan and Jac-Cen-Del did not have complete teams.
