A message from Career Academy Principal, Mr. Eric Kilburn
Happy October Pathway Parents!
Our teachers are hard at work educating your students on skills & techniques they will need to be successful at the job or at their next level of education! This is often the time in the school year that students begin to become pre-occupied with other life activities: Homecoming, jobs, or general boredom or apathy. It is important to remember that the coursework we provide is often associated with college credit. There are seat-time requirements as outlined by Western Iowa Technology for this coursework. Your teachers will be reaching out if your child is not meeting the minimum seat time requirements due to attendance. We will always bend over backwards for our students by providing makeup opportunities; however you and your children should be striving for a higher standard in this coursework, which promotes their future endeavors!
Lastly, we need your help! We are forming the first ever Parent-Teacher Advisory Committee for the Career Academy. If you have a child that is currently taking any Career and Technical Coursework and want to get involved at a higher capacity, please reach out! We’d love to have you on this advisory committee. The requirements will be minimal and your input extremely valuable.
I consider it an honor to work with your children and shaping their programming now and in the future. If there is ever anything I can do to support your child please let me know!
Yours in Education,
Eric Kilburn
A message from Career Academy School Counselor, Mr. Jeff Lucas
Scholarships: Seniors, remember to be checking for scholarships in your homeroom/advisory course in Canvas. You can find the link to scholarships in the District High School Advisory Course. Each high school has its own monthly list. Monthly lists are updated weekly.
College Applications: The next couple months are a busy time for submitting applications to colleges of interest. Along with the online application most colleges will want an official transcript and an ACT score with your admissions file.
Common App and Navigator: Seniors, your Navigator account is now linked with Common App. If schools you are applying to use Common App you can use the Common App link found on the home page of your Navigator account.
Transcript Requests: Seniors, part of the application process for colleges is submitting an official transcript to the colleges you are applying to. In order to submit your transcripts, you will need to log in to your Navigator account and click the ‘My Transcript Request” tab. See your counselor with questions.
FAFSA Update: For students who plan to attend college or career/trade school between July 1, 2024, and June 30, 2025, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) processes and system will be getting big updates. This includes a new and improved FAFSA experience for students and families. As a result, the updated FAFSA form will be available in December 2023.

The District is committed to providing all students with a safe learning environment in which everyone is treated with dignity and respect. The District’s Anti-Bullying, Harassment, and Hazing policy defines bullying and harassment as well as the procedures for reporting and investigating bullying or harassment complaints.
Bullying and harassment are defined as any electronic, written, verbal, or physical act or conduct toward a student which is based on any actual or perceived trait or characteristic of the student and which creates an objectively hostile school environment that meets one or more of the following conditions:
· Places the student in reasonable fear of harm to the student’s person or property.
· Has a substantially detrimental effect on the student’s physical or mental health.
· Has the effect of substantially interfering with a student’s academic performance.
· Has the effect of substantially interfering with the student’s ability to participate in or benefit from the services, activities, or privileges provided by a school.
If your student feels they are being bullied or harassed, encourage your student to visit with the student involved and tell them to stop. They should also tell a teacher, principal, or trusted adult at their school. An online discrimination, bullying, harassment, and hazing complaint form is also available on the District’s website and may be completed by the student, parent, or school employee.
