Dr. Ronald E. McNair ES Parent News
June 2024
Dear Families,
Hello June! We hope you are enjoying the shift to warmer weather. It means we are nearing the finish line! It has been an amazing year and we know the next few weeks will not be any different.
Before looking ahead, we wanted to reflect on a recent event. We congratulate all of the students who braved the stage for the 6th Annual Talent Show! Thank you to Mrs. Taylor, Mrs. Shorter and parents for allowing our students to shine. Thank you to the PTA and all the families who helped us celebrate the best staff in the UNIVERSE! Staff Appreciation Week was a success. Congratulations to Mrs. Martinelli and Mrs. Woodworth on coordinating our Art Night. We hope you enjoyed seeing your student's artwork in a gallery style setting. We send out congratulations to our fourth and fifth grade Instrumental Music students. Their performance under the leadership of Mrs. Rebekah Pedrick was awesome. Our students' hard work and dedication paid off! Thank you to every parent, family member, staff member, and student for making the evening successful. We appreciate the information on avoiding summer slide presented by Mrs. Raffo (Parent Community Coordinator), Mrs. Harrigan (Reading Specialist), Mrs. Baick (ELD teacher), and the MC Public Library Representative. It was very informative! Additional thanks to Mrs. Rogers, all staff, and our parent volunteers for a great field day! The weather was also beautiful! As an MCAP testing incentive, Mrs. Hilbrecht (Staff Development Teacher) and Mrs. Harrigan coordinated prize bags for students to win. Our students were motivated to do their best on the tests and cheered each other on as the winners were announced. Thank you to our students for showing ALL that you knew!
Thank you to all of the families who completed and returned the form informing us on whether your student will be returning to or leaving Dr. McNair ES. As we begin creating classes for next year, this is very helpful information.
End of Year:
In the upcoming days, we will have many end of year events at the various grade levels. Please be sure to check all correspondence from your child's teacher and the school. If you are a parent who enjoys a good game of kickball and has some time, please contact jessicamaeanderson@hotmail.com about playing during our Staff vs. Parents Kickball game at 2:30 on Monday, June 3. We are excited to see a version of our staff versus parents tradition live on. On Wednesday, June 5, we will be clapping the graduating Seniors of Northwest High School who will be joining us to walk our halls on their final day as a MCPS student. If you know a Northwest Senior have them to reach out if they are unaware of this. Our 5th grade parents should mark their calendars for Grade 5 Promotion at Northwest High School on June 10 at 10:00 am, with students arriving at 9:30 am. Our 5th graders will be honored in a clap out on June 11.
REMINDER!!! The last day of school is Thursday, June 13, 2024, which is an early release at 1:20 pm.
Thank you:

CONTACT INFORMATION
Emergencies can arise at any time. It is important to your child’s safety that we have your current address and current home and work numbers on file. If your address or phone number changes, please be sure to notify the office.
Sick Student?
We understand that students will be sick and we want to help you. When your child is sick, in addition to informing the classroom teacher, please be sure to inform the main office. The best way to do so is by completing the Student Absence form. We appreciate you keeping your student at home when they are ill.
Health Room Updates
Medication Pick Up
According to MCPS Regulation JPC-RA students are not permitted to take their medications home at the end of the school year. A parent/guardian must pick up all medications in the health room by the end of the school day on June 14, 2024..
To arrange for pick-up please contact School Health staff directly: wendy_wininger@mcpsmd.org & nicole_b_eyman@mcpsmd.org or 240-740-6832.
It is important that your child’s medication is picked up NO LATER than 2:00 pm on Thursday, June 13, 2024. There will not be any staff in the health room after that time to assist with pick up.
Therefore, non-emergency medication and expired medication of any kind remaining in the health room will be destroyed on: June 13, 2024 at 3:00 pm unless alternate arrangements have been made directly with School Health staff.
PREPARING FOR THE 2024-25 SCHOOL YEAR
Medication/Treatment Orders from your Health Care Provider
The medication/treatment authorization form(s) specific to your child's health/medication needs must be renewed at the beginning of each school year.
Maryland regulation dictates that we determine expiration dates as follows: (1) one year from the dispensing date on the pharmacy label or, (2) the expiration date on the medication package, whichever comes first.
To ensure your child's medication/treatment needs are met at the start of the school year submit medications/supplies, and completed forms to the health room on or after Friday, August 23, 2024. Please contact the health room in advance to ensure availability of School Health staff. Please be sure to include the appropriate medication forms, MCPS 525-13 (for oral medications, creams or inhalers) or the MCPS 525-14 (for epinephrine auto injectors, (treatment of anaphylaxis).
School health staff will review physician orders/medications. It is the parent/guardian responsibility to ensure that medications/orders are compliant with state regulation. Please do not send your child to school with medications. Per MCPS regulations, it is the parent/guardian responsibility to deliver physician orders/medications directly to School Health staff.
Thank you for your cooperation!
Leader In Me Parent Survey
Our school is implementing a whole-school transformational process called the Leader in Me, which teaches 21st-century leadership and life skills to students and creates a culture of student empowerment based on the idea that every child can be a leader. Dr. REMES will be conducting surveys to learn more about key areas of strength and areas of needed growth in our school. For us to have a holistic picture of what is going on in our school, we are asking all full-time staff members, parents/guardians, and students in Grade 4 and up to participate.
Parent Participation
If you decide to participate, you will be asked to complete a survey (without sharing your name or other identifying information) that will be available through the weblink below. The survey is completely voluntary, but we do hope to get feedback from one member of every household. The parent/guardian survey takes about 12 minutes to complete and will ask questions about your child and about their experience in our school. If you have more than one child attending the school, you will be asked to think about the oldest child's experiences as you answer questions related to their growth.
Please take this survey: https://www.leaderinme.com/s/ronald-mcnair-elementary-school/families
Please complete the survey by: June 9, 2024'

Staffing Updates
Farewell
As we close this current school year, we begin to look ahead to the next year that is on the horizon. First, we would like to wish the following staff members well in their retirements as they say goodbye to not just Dr. McNair, but to their career as educators as well:
- Ava Archer (Music teacher)
- Lynn Cavanaugh (Prekindergarten teacher)
- Sarah Feeney ( Fourth grade teacher)
Additional well wishes to these staff members as they move on to new adventures in other schools and states:
- Jennifer Dorfman (special education teacher)
- Jill Goldsborough (fourth grade teacher)
- Jessica Graber (principal intern)
- Kate Lamiman (0.2 speech and language teacher)
- Mary Veroxie (special education teacher)
We say farewell for a variety of reasons, such as, transitioning to teach at another school, promotions, moving out of state, or reduction in staffing. No matter the reason, we will always consider them a part of the Dr. McNair family and we wish them the best of luck.
Looking ahead!
We are projected to have the following sections of classes for 2023-2024:
- 1 full day Prekindergarten,
- 5 Kindergarten,
- 5 Grade 1,
- 4 Grade 2,
- 5 Grade 3,
- 4 Grade 4, and
- 5 Grade 5 classes.
We will be closely monitoring our enrollment throughout the summer to determine if any changes need to be made to our classroom sections. Please keep in mind that staffing is also based on our student enrollment and potential budget shortfalls. Therefore, changes could be made to the number of sections at each grade level.
New English Language Arts Curriculum
MCPS is excited to adopt Amplify CKLA PreK-5 and Amplify Boost Reading K-5 across English Language Arts classrooms for the 2024-2025 School Year. There is a lot more information to come in the coming weeks, yet we wanted to make sure you were able to begin understanding how to best support your students.
Summer Programs
Summer Programs have been modified for all schools within MCPS. Dr. Ronald E. McNair ES will not have any summer school programs. However, we encourage you to have your student practice their skills throughout the summer.
One great way is through the Montgomery County Public Libraries’ Summer Reading Challenge.
This challenge will take place June 14 through August 31.
Kindergarten Orientation
For the 2024-2025 school year, Kindergarten registration will be online through the ParentVUE portal starting March 18th.
