Health Class @ LME with Ms. Stacy

Dear Families of Intermediate Students (grades 3-5),

We hope your child has been enjoying health class this year. We would like to provide you with some information about potentially sensitive topics our curriculum is covering. If you have any questions or concerns or would like to review the lessons for the topics identified below, please contact me.

Puberty — Students will learn about the physical and emotional changes that occur during puberty. Students will also learn about internal and external reproductive anatomy. Instruction will occur in the co-ed health classroom.

Tolerance — Students will be talking about respect and the harmful effects of bullying. Students will discuss the importance of respectful social interaction with all people, despite any differences in race, gender identity, sexual orientation or beliefs.

HIV — Students in 4th and 5th grade only will learn about the HIV virus and how to prevent infection.

Sexual Harassment/Privacy — Students will learn about body privacy, refusal skills, and the importance of reporting sexual harassment.

This week we are starting Unit 4. Students will identify what is and what is not medicine. We will commit to informing others about the dangers of taking medicines not prescribed for them. First graders will practice differentiating between medicines and non-medicines. Finally we will compare and contrast candy to chewable vitamins or chewable pain reliever.

This week we are starting Unit 4. We will describe what the heart does and explain why it is called, "the hardest working machine." Students will develop respect for the importance of a healthy working heart. Second graders will practice being aware of and recording one's own pulse at different times. Finally, we will compare and contrast oxygenated blood with deoxygenated blood.

This week we are starting Unit 4. By the end of this week's lesson, students will identify the major organs of the respiratory system and describe what they do. Fifth graders will describe the physical, emotional, and social benefits of abstaining from tobacco products. Students will practice proper breathing techniques for maximum health benefits. Finally we will predict the effects of poisonous gases on the respiratory system.
