A MESSAGE FROM DR. ELLISON
Dear Parents and Guardians,
October is anti-bullying month! Bullying is an issue that we work hard to address through our social/emotional learning lessons and supportive programming. Starting this week we will be launching our bully prevention unit in each classroom. Every student will receive lessons from the Second Step curriculum that include recognizing bullying, reporting bullying, refusing bullying, bystander power, and digital safety. This preventative program provides supportive language and tools to create a safe school environment.
We believe that all students should be free from worries about being bullied. Previously, the District shared information about the D34 Bullying Tip Line and Safe2Help Illinois.
The Board of Education policy on bullying begins with this goals statement:
Bullying, intimidation, and harassment diminish a student's ability to learn and a school's ability to educate. Preventing students from engaging in these disruptive behaviors is an important District goal.
Bullying is defined as follows:
Bullying means any severe or pervasive physical or verbal act or conduct, including communications made in writing or electronically, directed toward a student that has or can be reasonably predicted to have the effect of one or more of the following:
Placing the student in reasonable fear of harm to the student’s person or property.
Causing a substantially detrimental effect on the student’s physical or mental health.
Substantially interfering with the student’s academic performance.
Substantially interfering with the student’s ability to participate in or benefit from a school's services, activities, or privileges.
Bullying, intimidation, and/or harassment may take various forms, including, without limitation, threats, stalking, physical violence, sexual harassment, theft, public humiliation, destruction of property, or retaliation for asserting or alleging an act of bullying.
Our school staff members will respond immediately and compassionately to a student who reports bullying or school violence. We will inform you whenever your child is involved in a bullying report. Our staff members intervene immediately to stop bullying incidents.
We understand that this can be a complex topic and we encourage you to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
In partnership,
Kate Ellison

STUDENT MATERIALS & LUNCH DROP OFF DURING THE SCHOOL DAY
We will continue with the procedures put in place last year as a result of improvements made to all D34 buildings. The outer door to the vestibule will be locked throughout the school day. While this is great for safety and security, it will make it a bit more challenging to receive forgotten student items during the school day. While we understand that students forget things from time to time, we also want to minimize classroom disruptions and traffic in the office.
If you are dropping something off for your child in the middle of the school day, please leave it labeled on the cart in the vestibule. Our office staff will do a morning and afternoon check of the cart and notify teachers. We will also do a student delivery of materials before lunchtime to ensure everyone has what they need for lunch and recess.
NEWS FROM THE LRC
It’s Pumpkin Time!
The Optional Pumpkin Character Contest is back again. Students will be voting for 5 categories. The winning pumpkins will be announced and given a handmade ribbon by a student volunteer.
Please encourage your children to use these 5 categories when planning their pumpkin:
1. The most creative use of materials
2. The best representation of a book character
3. The best representation of a book hero or a book villain
4. The most unusual book character representation
5. The best representation of a book
Real or fake pumpkins can be decorated just not carved. (We don’t want any rotting ones). We are encouraging everyone to focus on just the pumpkin to tell the story, not on an elaborate background. Students can bring in their decorated pumpkin starting Wednesday, October 16th through Tuesday, October 22nd. If any student has difficulty getting a pumpkin and/or supplies, please reach out to me. We want everyone who would like to participate to be able to. Students may work on this with family or friends. Pumpkins need to be taken home by Friday, November 1.

SCIENCE NEWS
We continue to explore force and motion in 3rd grade by looking for patterns in motion and data to help make predictions. Our young scientists have been introduced to 2 new learning experiences this school year: a Newton's Cradle prediction making demonstration and a measuring the force of gravity in Newtons to look for patterns in data we collect. This is the first year and first group of students to interact with both, and so far the results and reactions have been awesome! If your Gator scientist would like to try to make one at home, check out this YouTube video! We will soon be moving on exploring two additional invisible forces: static electricity and magnetism, so stay tuned for more science fun!
All 5th grade classrooms are officially in Unit 1 this week, with some just getting it kicked off and some others getting ready to explore physical and chemical properties of matter to solve a problem. If you remember from the last Gator News, I mentioned something about pancakes in science. Let the curiosity end here! Next week, some of our 5th grade chemists are ready to investigate if the batch of pancake batter they received should be recalled or not. They will collect and analyze qualitative data to make their decision, and write like a scientist stating their position with evidence. It will be a full week of getting our hands dirty all in the name of science!

Supporting Our Children in Their Hardest Moments with Dr. Doug Bolton
Our children are facing emotional struggles like never before, and as parents/guardians, we often don’t know how to respond effectively. Recent brain science offers new insights into emotional regulation and provides tools to support our children in their toughest times. This workshop will equip parents with strategies to better understand and help their children during challenging moments.
The Debra Gelfand Children’s Foundation has invited Psychologist Doug Bolton to speak to all D34 families and the Glenview community on Wednesday, October 23, at 7pm at Attea Middle School (2500 Chestnut Ave). Interpretation and childcare services are available to in-person attendees.
Doug Bolton is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and Director of School Consultation for Formative Psychological Services. He spent over 20 years as a psychologist and principal at North Shore Academy, a K-12 therapeutic school in Highland Park. Dr. Bolton provides consultation, supervision and professional development to caregivers, educators, and clinicians throughout northern Illinois to create communities that help foster child and adult resilience.
The Glenview Community Winter Wear Drive, from October 10-24, aims to ensure that local families in need stay warm and comfortable during the cold winter months. We are collecting new and like-new winter coats, hats, scarves, mittens, and gloves to provide warmth and comfort to those who need it most.
From October 10-24, drop off donations of new and like-new clean winter coats, hats, gloves, and scarves at the following locations:
- Roosevelt Pool Club House (2239 Fir St) temporary Youth Services location
- Attea School (2500 Chestnut Ave)
- Springman School (2701 Central Rd) main entrance on Washington St
- Glenview Public Library Lobby (1930 Glenview Rd)
- Glenview Park Center (2400 Chestnut Ave)
Check out our Amazon Wishlist, or you can skip the shopping and donate at tinyurl.com/GVWinterWear. Every contribution, coat or cash, big or small, helps us make a difference in the lives of our neighbors. A shopping event for those in need will take place later this fall.
This initiative is made possible through the collaborative efforts of District 34, Youth Services, the Debra Gelfand Children's Foundation, and the District 34 PTAs.
The Glenview Community Food Drive to support the Northfield Township Food Pantry runs from October 21-25. You can drop off items at collection boxes at any D34 school or deliver food or check/cash donations directly to the pantry at 2550 Waukegan Rd., in Glenview (in front of the Jewel on Waukegan Road).
