Learning This Past Week

Language Arts: We continue to read "My Teacher is an Alien" and respond using their writers notebook. We also learned the suffix -ly and practiced spelling words with that ending. This week we are learning the suffix -er and -or. Please continue to have students read 35 minutes a night and complete their reading log.

Social Studies: Students continue to study the Native Americans and their Cultural Regions. They completed their reading notes on all 8 regions and created presentations focused on one specific region of their choice. They will be presenting to their peers this week.

Math: Students have been busy finding the area of rectangles with whole number and fractional side lengths. They are demonstrating great enthusiasm in math!

Science: Students did experiments with yeast to break It out of its dormancy stage. They learned that you need sugar to break yeast out of its dormancy stage. On Friday they finished observing the wheat plants.

Math - Finding area of a rectangle with a fractional side length

Students practiced finding the area of a rectangle with a whole number length and a fractional width using the formula for area, A = L x W. We discussed why the numerator and whole number are multiplied, while the denominator stays the same when finding the value of an expression like 4 x 3/5. Ask your child to explain why!

Big thanks to all the parent voluteers who helped put on a memorable Halloween/Fall Festival celebration! The kids had a great time eating goodies, playing games, dancing, getting tattoos, painting pumpkins, and spending time with their friends!
