MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Franklin Students and Families,
It's hard to believe that we have one more week of school until winter break. This week teachers have finished grading and submitted quarter 2 progress reports. The reports will be ready next week for students and families to view. This coming week we have tutorial on Thursday and Friday. I have heard several teachers invite students to attend tutorial to work on assignments that may have impacted their progress grades. Students, be sure to take advantage of this time with your teachers. I hope that students and families can check in with each other this week about grades and class attendance.
The Successful Schools Survey deadline has been extended to Monday, December 16th. Please click here to give us your feedback on how Franklin is doing and where we can improve. Thank you!
Have a wonderful weekend and I hope the sun shines for us a bit.

Suicide Prevention & Mental Health Support During the Holidays
Every year, many of our FHS students and families experience increased stress during the winter holiday season and some of our students may experience symptoms of anxiety, depression, and thoughts about death or suicide. Franklin has many school based supports that all student can access, as well as additional culturally-specific providers on site, to ensure equitable access to care for our students who identify as Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC).
If your student is thinking about suicide, please consider using the following crisis supports:
- Multnomah County Crisis Line (& Project Respond) | 503-988-4888 | 24/7 mental health support
- Cascadia Urgent Walk-In Clinic: 42nd & SE Division | 503-963-2575 | Walk in open daily 9am-9pm
- National 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline | dial or text 988 | 24/7 support and many other Suicide Prevention resources
If you are unsure what "signs of suicide" to look out for, the following is a list (from 988) of common warning signs, especially if the behavior you student is experiencing is new, has increased, or seems related to a painful event, loss, or life change:
- Talking about wanting to die or to kill themselves
- Looking for a way to kill themselves, like searching online or buying a gun
- Talking about feeling hopeless or having no reason to live
- Talking about feeling trapped or in unbearable pain
- Talking about being a burden to others
- Increasing the use of alcohol or drugs
- Acting anxious or agitated; behaving recklessly
- Sleeping too little or too much
- Withdrawing or isolating themselves
- Showing rage or talking about seeking revenge
- Extreme mood swings
Remember, don't panic! Talking to your child about suicide thoughts can be intense, but asking them if they are thinking about suicide will NOT give them the idea, and will NOT increase the chance of them making an attempt. Talking with a trusted adult or parent about these thoughts often brings feelings of relief once they are able to start talking about these thoughts and feelings. If you need support having this conversation with your student, please reach out to their School Counselor or the School Social Worker, Jed McClean | 503-729-1626 | jmcclean1@pps.net
Drop-Off and Pick-Up Protocols
We ask that all students be dropped off in front of the school or further away if possible, to avoid congestion on Woodward. We want to do our best to keep the street clear as students walk to and from campus.
Please be reminded that Franklin parking lots are for staff only during the day, not for student use. Cars found in violation are subject to tow at the owner's expense. Drop-offs or pick-ups in school driveways or parking lots are not permitted.
We ask that families and students please slow down on Woodward and be aware of pedestrians crossing at the two crosswalks in front of the school. Blocking these crosswalks puts our students and the rest of the community in harm's way.
A few tips for a less frustrating pick-up for drop-off:
- Give yourself a few extra minutes in the morning. 8:10 is a much less busy time to drop-off than 8:20 is.
- Come a bit after the bell rings in the afternoon. At 3:30 on the dot, Woodward is packed with cars that are unable to move. By 3:45, traffic is moving pretty steadily, and most students take that long to get out of the building anyway.
- Find a spot a block or so away for dropping off or picking up and avoid Woodward all together. Our neighbors will thank you and your student will get some fresh air and a bit of exercise. Win, win!
