Early Notification of Separation Incentive
In an effort to assist HCPS with forecasting budget savings and project staffing needs for FY 2023-2024, an Early Notification of Separation Incentive is currently offered to employees. A memorandum of understanding has been executed with each collective bargaining unit and includes the following information:
- Incentive. HCPS is offering a one-time payment of $500 for employees who provide notification on or before Tuesday, January 31, 2023, of their intent to separate from employment with an effective date of separation of Tuesday, February 28, 2023 through and inclusive of Friday, June 30, 2023. Written notification of intent to separate must be received in the Human Resources Office no later than 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 31, 2023. An email including the signed letter of intent to separate is also acceptable. Send email to Ms. Lori Hatfield, Administrative Support Coordinator, at Lori.Hatfield@hcps.org.
- Eligibility.
- Separations pertaining to this incentive are limited to separations resulting from retirement or resignation.
- The early notification incentive does not apply to probationary employees.
- An employee must be in good standing on the date of his/her submission of intent to separate from employment through the date of his/her separation. Good standing means that the employee has no disciplinary investigation/action pending against the employee.
- If the employee’s separation from employment will result in a breach of his/her teacher contract, he or she is not eligible for the early notification incentive.
- Any staff member who, prior to the execution of this MOU, provided written notification to the Human Resources department of his/her intent to separate effective Tuesday, February 28, 2023 through and inclusive of Friday, June 30, 2023, will be eligible for the early notification incentive.
- Payment. The payment for early notification provided pursuant to this MOU shall be issued on July 21, 2023 or with final reconciliation check, if earlier. HCPS reserves the right to deduct from the $500 incentive payment any amount owed by the employee to HCPS, at time of separation.
The full memorandum of understanding regarding this incentive can be found on the Human Resources SharePoint page or by clicking here. Questions regarding this information should be directed to C. Mae Alfree, Ed.D., Director of Staff and Labor Relations, at Mae.Alfree@hcps.org or 410-588-5226.

Tips and Tricks for Resumes in 2022
- Highlight relevant skills and experience.
You should use a different resume for every job you apply for. Your resume should be tailored to the specific job you are applying for. - Ditch the objective statement.
Objective statements should be used when making a career change or transition. - Use keywords.
Using keywords from the job description gives your resume a better chance of being noticed in applicant tracking systems
If you are looking to transition or advance within HCPS and would like more resume advice, please email maranda.scott@hcps.org.

The HCPS Maryland Leads Grant
The Maryland State Department of Education launched a new grant initiative to support school systems in targeted strategy areas utilizing federal funds to overcome the learning loss resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, accelerate student learning to narrow opportunity and achievement gaps, and provide more targeted support for historically underserved students and their communities. HCPS is excited for approvals and partnerships that are now in place for the following strategies:
- Grow Your Own Staff- Led by Talent Pathways Project Manager Vicki Jones, this strategy requires school districts to launch initiatives to grow the pathways of teachers and other professional staff.
- Staff - Support & Retention – Led by Supervisor of Teacher Preparation and Professional Development Rebecca Spencer, this strategy focuses on retention, coaching, and supporting National Board Certification hopefuls.
- Reimagining the Use of Time – Led by Director of Middle School Innovation Natalie Holloway, this strategy supports the education services innovation teams through consultation about restructuring of the school day and to support the development of the middle school career explorations and pathways programming.
- Innovative School Models/ Harford Investment Program – Led by Supervisor of Magnet and CTE Programs Curriculum and Assessment Rob Limpert, this strategy focuses on providing career and technical education while expanding apprentice opportunities to students. Through this model, students will have access to a program that will equip them with career readiness, exploration, and work-based learning while still in high school.
- Transforming Neighborhoods – Led by Grants Specialist Roclande White and Executive Director of Student Support Services Buck Hennigan, this strategy maximizes the community schools’ model to go beyond academics to serve students and their families. Through this grant, four more schools became Community Schools: Riverside Elementary School, Edgewood Middle School, Magnolia Middle School, and Joppatowne High School.

Health for the Holidays
Looking for a way to relieve holiday stress and maintain balance? Picture yourself having a healthier, happier holiday season by joining us in Health for the Holidays, a lighthearted online wellness program. As you record daily health behaviors, you paint a winter scene – brushing on more color and detail – while earning inches of snow. The more you do, the more your painting comes to life and the more snow builds up, reinforcing your healthy holiday accomplishments. Every week there’s a new scene – with surprises that inspire you to keep at it until you finish each painting. Your goal is to record daily exercise, healthy eating, and special Gift Box behaviors (there’s a new one each day). You add an inch of snow for each of these activities… piling up to 21 inches a week. And you complete a painting by recording activities 5 or more days a week. Aim to accumulate 60 total inches of snow and finish 4 paintings during the 4-week campaign. Participants can log their daily activity on a computer or on their phone using the Health for the Holidays app! You can even connect a tracking device to record your daily steps! The participant with the most points at the end of the 4-week program will receive a grand prize, courtesy of our partners at CareFirst.
Don’t miss out on the perfect way to wrap up the year feeling more energetic and resilient. Click here to view a brief promotional video for the program. This program is available to all HCPS employees, free of charge.
Registration is NOW OPEN and the program will begin on Monday, November 21, 2022! Click here to register!
