What Every Spartan Needs to Know
Prom Guests
Reminder that anyone bringing a guest to prom who is a 9/10 grade MHS student, a current student at another high school or a 2023 MHS graduate of MHS must complete a guest form and turn it into the front office NO LATER than 315pm on Monday, April 29th.
Exchange Street Update
The Exchange street project has been impacted by the last few rainstorms. The current traffic patterns will be in place until April 29th instead of April 22nd. We will update new information for April 29th by April 25th. Here is the link for more information on our website.
Direct Admit Wisconsin
McFarland High School is participating in a new state program called Direct Admit Wisconsin. Direct Admit Wisconsin is designed to provide a place for all Wisconsin high school students to access a world-class public education by proactively offering them admission to the Universities of Wisconsin.
Based on a review of your student's 11th grade transcript (grade point average, math coursework, progression towards graduation), you and your student will receive an email in August indicating which UWs are providing them direct admission, and the next steps necessary in order to learn more about enrolling within the Universities of Wisconsin.
Participating in this program does not commit your student to attend the Universities of Wisconsin.
There are 10 UWs participating in Direct Admit Wisconsin for Fall 2025: UW-Green Bay, UW-Milwaukee, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Parkside, UW-Platteville, UW-River Falls, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Stout, UW-Superior and UW-Whitewater.
To facilitate the administration of this program, the following information will be shared by the school with the Universities of Wisconsin: Name, WISEid, Local Student District ID, contact information, legal sex, race/ethnicity, GPA and high school transcripts.
If you DO NOT WANT your student's information to be shared with Direct Admit Wisconsin, please email Principal Brett Jacobson (jacobsb@mcfsd.org) by May 15, 2024.
For further information on Direct Admit Wisconsin please see the following FAQ.
Please note, there is another program, called Wisconsin Guarantee which is also new for the Class of 2025. This is separate from the Direct Admit Wisconsin program. We will be releasing more information regarding that program soon, and information is also available at this website.
Also know that in addition to these programs, the traditional application process continues to be an option for any student.
Celebrations
Model UN at Northwestern University Competition
Students did a great job at the Northwestern University Model United Nations conference this past weekend. They debated, collaborated, created coalitions, and solved problems throughout the weekend. One of our students, Ava, won Best Delegate in her committee about Tenochtitlan 1519. Great job Spartans!
Badger Conference Top Scholars
Congratulations to our Badger Conference Top Scholars. The Badger Conference recognizes the Top Scholars of each school in the conference at a reception, which was held at Oregon High School on Sunday, April 14th.
Eco Club
Eco Club students visited the first grade classrooms and showed them how to plant sunflowers.
Poli Sci, APUSH, AP Gov
Our Political Science, AP US History and AP US Government classes had the pleasure to go to the Overture Center to see the play "What the Constitution Means to Me". The kids were able to learn about the constitution and its connections to ordinary people. The play, through a personal story, showed how the constitution and culture has changed and stayed the same over time.
BSU
The MHS Black Student Union attended the first annual Dane County Black Student Union Coalition at Madison College. The students shared ideas and connected with BSU students from Oregon, Middleton, Memorial, Sun Prairie West, Waunakee and Monona Grove. The Madison College BSU led the amazing workshops. The group also had the pleasure of hearing from local educator Percy Brown. Great job spartans.
Upcoming Events

Student Services
Attendance
The best and most accurate way to report your student's attendance is via IC. You are able to enter your request directly into IC at any time of day, even for short notice requests. (Instructions). If you are concerned that the office staff is not receiving your IC absence request, please make sure you allow push notifications for the Infinite Campus app on your phone. Once the IC request is processed you will get a notification.
Health Services
Bridging Brighter Smiles Dental Clinic
Bridging Brighter Smiles Dental Clinic will be back at MHS on Tuesday, April 30th and Wednesday, May 1st for their spring visits! It's not too late to enroll! See flier information for more details and how to enroll; as well as the MSD Health Service website for additional Dental Resources.
Spring Allergies
April showers bring May flowers--and pollen! If your student suffers from Spring allergies, Health Services can help. We are happy to keep over-the-counter allergy medicines such as Zyrtec, Claritin or Allegra for your student to take during the school day. If this is something you're interested in doing, please fill out our over-the-counter medication consent form, sign the bottom and send it to your student's health office. Medications must be sent in the original container-please no pills in baggies, tupperware or other unlabeled containers. Each health office does keep oral Benadryl in stock, for those with life-threatening allergic reactions. It is not recommended to be used as a first-line treatment for seasonal allergies and careful consideration should be taken when administering Benadryl at school, given that it can result in drowsiness.
It can be difficult to determine whether red, itchy and watery eyes are a result of Spring allergies or are a result of a bacterial or viral infection that may need further evaluation. See below for a quick run-down of symptoms, treatment and the District's guidelines on exclusion from school for pink eye.
Bacterial pink eye: Symptoms include yellow or green colored, sticky discharge from the affected eye. Eyes are often very itchy and the eyelids may become swollen. You may notice your child's eyelids are crusted shut, especially in the morning. This must be treated with antibiotic ointment or eye drops and will then typically clear within 5-7 days.
Viral pink eye: Discharge is normally watery but may be sticky and yellow in the morning. Eyelids can become very swollen. Symptoms typically follow a recent cold or sore throat. Antibiotic ointments or eye drops will not help with viral pink eye. Eye wash solutions such as Artificial Tears can help relieve symptoms. Contact your Provider if symptoms do not improve within 7-14 days.
MSD's Health Services Department follows the DHS Wisconsin Childhood Communicable Disease guidelines for exclusion practices from school. For the majority of pink eye cases, students do not have to be excluded from school. Circumstances that would result in your student being excluded from school include fever or if the student is unable to refrain from touching their affected eye. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Stephanie Peplinski, District Nurse, at peplins@mcfsd.org.
Parent/Guardian & Emergency Contact Information
Emergencies can happen at any time, so it is crucial that school staff, especially Health Services staff, are able to get in contact with a parent/guardian or an emergency contact during the school day. Please take a moment to review your students' listed emergency contacts in the IC parent portal to ensure the information listed is the most current. If there are special circumstances where you know you will not be available for calls during a specific time of day or if school staff should utilize an alternate phone number such as an office line, please ensure that this is communicated and/or make sure that your listed emergency contacts are aware of this, as health office staff may need to contact them if your student is seen in the health office and parent/guardian notification is required. To make changes to your emergency contacts please see here for steps to update contact information. Thank you for our partnership in helping to keep our students safe and healthy!
