St. Paul's Trumpet
November 7, 2024
“Generations of disciples, reflecting God’s love, to our community and the world.”
Dear Friends,
Once upon a time Sunday was a special day, a holy day, a day different from the other six days of the week…. This was a time when people like those I grew up with still believed that it was enough to spend six days a week trying to make a living, … fretting over the future, despairing over whether life would ever get better. Six days of worrying were enough. The Sabbath was the Lord’s Day, a momentary slowdown in our ongoing struggle to survive and an opportunity to surrender ourselves to the rest only God offered. Come Sunday, we set aside our worries about the ordinary, uninspiring daily living, and renewed our love and devotion to God, through Sunday worship and fellowship.
Our hearts were ultimately fixed on one thing alone. Sunday held out to us the promise that we might enter the Sanctuary, our Sunday School rooms, and the Fellowship Hall and find a sacred moment and blessing from a week of hard work and daily responsibilities. Remembering the Sabbath, where I grew up, meant being more connected to God and the people I called friends and loved ones. Ultimately, in good company, with fine clothes and countless potluck meals, we would gather to pray, reflect, laugh and support one another. The Sabbath allowed us to mend our tattered lives and restore dignity to our souls.
We rested, giving ourselves over fully to the divine dimension, where in God’s presence we found “rest” not in stillness and in repose but in more labor—a different kind of labor. The Sabbath meant more than withdrawal from labor and activity. It meant to consciously enter into a realm of the sacred, to worship and praise. Sunday was set aside to recultivate the soul’s appreciation for beauty, truth, love, and eternity. The Lord’s Day allows us to bring our souls, our emotions, our senses, our vision, and even our bodies back to God so that God might remember our tattered, broken selves and put our priorities back in order. The Sabbath makes sure we have the time to do what’s really important and be with those we really care about.
I miss the Sabbath of my childhood. I miss believing in the holiness of time. There is little in this culture, and hardly anything in my adult days and nights, to serve as a timely reminder of how precious life really is, to remind me of sacred moments. Perhaps, I should begin to look for new ways to celebrate Sabbath that is just as meaningful in this new time and place. How do we offer Sabbath to stressed out and burned out families who wake up on Sunday morning not to worship but rather to do housework and shuttle children to a day full of activities? How does Sabbath happen on the edge of a soccer field or near a park or anyplace that people gather? How does the church become missional on Sunday morning? We receive the sacrament of Holy Communion and make our way into a mission site. Imagine a new kind of sabbath.
Blessings,
Pastor Chad

Ways to Give at St. Paul's UMC
Your financial gifts help sustain the mission and ministry of our congregation as we "reflect the love of God to our community and the world!" There are several different ways that you can give to St. Paul's, the details are below, and we are happy to answer any questions you may have along the way.
1. Online Giving – This is a safe and convenient way to support St. Paul's with either a one-time or recurring gift. Click here to set up your account, and if you need assistance, contact our St. Paul's Treasurer, Cindy Balentine.
2. Cash or Check –On Sundays during worship, you can place your cash or check in the offering plates or offering box. There are offering envelopes in each pew and in the back of the Chapel so that you can designate your gift. Checks should be made out to "St. Paul's United Methodist Church" and designations can also be noted on the memo line. You can also mail your gifts to St. Paul's at 324 S. Jackson Street, Papillion, NE 68046.
3. Automated Bank Withdrawals –This form of giving allows your bank to withdraw money directly from your designated account and transfer it to St. Paul's UMC. There are no fees involved and it's as simple as filling out a form -- contact the Church Office or St. Paul's Treasurer, Cindy Balentine to get started!
4. IRA Distribution or Savings giving –This is another wonderful way to help sustain the ministry of St. Paul's UMC. It requires you to work with your bank or broker to determine the details, but you can also contact our St. Paul's Treasurer, Cindy Balentine, to get an outline of this process.
Every gift helps make a difference -- thank you for your generous support of St. Paul's United Methodist Church!
