Building a Strong Community of Readers Is The Goal
As we continue to build a culture of reading with our students here at school, we need your help at home. Reading at least 20-minutes a day at home independently or with someone, has significant educational benefits for students. These include:
- Vocabulary expansion: Regularly reading exposes individuals to a large number of words, leading to a richer vocabulary and better language comprehension.
- Improved reading comprehension: Consistent practice with different genres and text types sharpens reading comprehension skills.
- Enhanced writing skills: By observing sentence structure and word usage in books, reading can significantly improve writing abilities.
- Critical thinking development: Reading encourages analysis, evaluation, and interpretation of information, boosting critical thinking skills.
- Empathy building: By encountering characters from different backgrounds and situations, readers can develop empathy and understanding of diverse perspectives.
- Stress reduction: Reading can serve as a relaxing activity, helping to alleviate stress and anxiety.
- Cognitive function improvement: Studies show that regular reading can enhance brain activity and cognitive function, potentially mitigating age-related decline.
- Academic success: Students who read consistently tend to perform better on standardized tests and in academics overall.
Do you want to learn skills and strategies to help your child with reading?
