Principal's Message
Greetings Stuart-Hobson Community!
As we settle into the rhythm and cadence of the school year, I want to discuss Stuart-Hobson’s work in alignment with DCPS’s Becoming initiative. This critical initiative is funded in part by a $16 million grant from the DC Education Trust. The fundamental principle of the Becoming initiative is that all children possess potential skills, waiting to be activated by favorable learning conditions. We aim for our school environment to be structured so that all children to feel loved, challenged, and prepared, which requires intentional and thoughtful efforts beyond academic instruction.
Our work with the Becoming initiative builds on our core instructional practices, fostering a responsive learning environment where educators adapt to the diverse academic, social, and emotional needs of students. This work strengthens students' connection to the school community and fosters a strong sense of belonging. Our educators understand that school climate is directly related to school effectiveness, aligning with DCPS’s mission that 85% of students feel safe and have a sense of belonging.
DCPS has found that schools participating in the Becoming pilot have demonstrated measurable success in reducing absenteeism and serious behavioral infractions.
At Stuart-Hobson, we actively track student engagement in the classroom, responses to surveys, and participation in school activities to ensure they are building a strong connection to our school community. We ask students directly, “How much do you feel you belong at your school?” We clearly communicate our behavior and academic expectations using positive, action-oriented language. We work tirelessly on both the small details—such as improving the morning arrival process—and the larger initiatives, like offering a wide range of athletic and extracurricular activities so all students have a place at Stuart-Hobson and feel a strong sense of belonging.
We were excited to join the Cluster PTA's Welcome Back meeting earlier this week, to kick-off Hispanic Heritage Month with a mariachi concert for our students, and that we will have our first Pep Assembly and the annual Cluster Cup scavenger hunt in the next week. Events like these ensure that diverse members of our school community are able to build connections with one another and find opportunities to belong.
Remember, you can always contact the front office at 202-671-6010 or email me directly at eric.fraser@k12.dc.gov to learn more about ways that your student can get involved or with any other questions or needs.
Warm Regards,
Eric Fraser
Principal

LiveSchool Standings Update
LiveSchool is our platform for tracking student behavior, achievements, and points throughout the school year. By earning points for positive behavior and meeting expectations, students are rewarded for their efforts in the classroom and around the school. These points contribute to grade-level standings, where we celebrate the groups demonstrating strong leadership, responsibility, and school spirit. Back to School Night handouts included information about creating a parent or student account so you can see how your student is doing. On Friday, September 27th, we will have our first Pep Assembly of the year and whichever grade level has earned the most LiveSchool points since school starts will earn a dress down week the following week!

2024-2025 Athletics' Participation Packet
The 2024-2025 Athletics’ Participation packet has been released. All students must complete a participation packet every school year. Additionally, the medical forms must be completed within the prior 365 days. We encourage you to have your healthcare provider complete these forms before the school year and attach them to your participation packet. If your student’s UHC has been updated recently, you are encouraged to complete the participation packet as soon as possible.
Universal Health Certificate (UHC).
Students with certain medical conditions may also need to complete an Asthma Action Plan or an Anaphylaxis Action Plan
Please note that it is not necessary to submit a new participation packet for each season. A complete packet includes the DCIAA forms filled out in their entirety along with a Universal Health Certificate that was completed within the last year. ALL STUDENTS MUST HAVE REQUIRED DOCUMENTS SUBMITTED AND APPROVED BEFORE PARTICIPATION.

Third Annual Stuart Hobson Mock Trial Club
Fridays 3:45-4:30
Sept. 27, 2024 – Feb 28, 2025 (final trial date tbd)
Who can participate?
For this year’s program, we welcome any incoming 6th grade student as well as any mock trial veteran (returning student) to join us in learning about and bringing to life a mock criminal trial!
This is a great program for any student- introverts, extroverts, wanna-be lawyers, actors, writers, free thinkers, those good-at-arguing-with-siblings, and everyone in between.
Program Description
Over the course of the year, students will prepare to conduct a mock criminal trial, where the students themselves will take on the roles of lawyers and witnesses. In February 2025, the program will culminate in a full mock trial before a real D.C. judge in a real D.C. courtroom (and an audience of family and friends).
During class, students will learn the nuts and bolts of trials and will gain skills in effective trial advocacy. The majority of our class time will be spent preparing for the mock trial. But students will also have the opportunity to discuss the legal system, some current events that pertain to the law and to hear about careers in the law from law students and practicing attorneys.
Students will work in teams (the defense team or the prosecution team) to get their “case” ready for trial. Depending on their role, the students will write opening and closing arguments, as well as questions for direct and cross examinations of witnesses.
The first class will be Friday, September 27, 2024.
Questions? Feel free to reach out to Ms. Boccardi amy.boccardi@k12.dc.gov or Kyra at kej73@georgetown.edu.
Ready to join?
Interested students (or their guardians) should complete this form by September 9, 2024.
If there are more interested students than can be accommodated, a lottery will be used to select the final class list. Accepted students will be notified by email in mid-September.

Save the Date - 2024 Renovators House Tour - October 20, Buy your Tickets Today!
The 2024 Renovators House Tour will be held on Sunday, October 20, from 12:00 to 5:00 PM. All proceeds benefit the Capitol Hill Cluster School, a public school in Washington, D.C. This event began in 2001 when three Capitol Hill mothers, looking for a way to support their children’s public school, came up with the idea of showcasing renovated homes in their historic neighborhood. Their goal was to highlight stories of transformation and change, and since its inception, more than 4,500 people have participated in the tour, raising over $200,000 for the school. These funds have supported essential initiatives, from new classroom technology to arts programs.
Each year, generous homeowners in the community open their doors, sharing their unique renovation stories. The tour never repeats the same renovation, offering fresh inspiration and ideas for those considering their own home projects. It’s also a wonderful way to spend a Sunday exploring Capitol Hill, enjoying beautifully transformed homes, and supporting a local public school’s growth.
Visit https://www.renovatorstour.org/about for more information and to purchase tickets.
