PHCS Administrative Team Updates
Steven Coffin- Superintendent of Schools
Katie Jo Thomas- Building Principal
Kate Cruikshank- Assistant Principal
We would like to thank our students, staff, families and community members for their dedication to education and support as we move from a Post-Covid world towards a new normalcy in our Education System.
As we end Quarter ONE and prepare for Quarter TWO we would like to remind you that our
Administrative Focus Areas for the 2022-2023 School Year Are:
** Relationships- Increasing Daily Attendance
** Engagement- Increasing Student/Family Communication
** Intentionality- Increasing Student Learning
Reflecting on Quarter One we found areas in our handbook that needed additional clarification. The Extracurricular Handbook is an all encompassing handbook that provides guidelines for student athletes and students participating in extracurricular clubs or programs (Robotics, Theatrical Performances, etc).
Below you will find specific areas of focus as well as the complete Extracurricular Handbook.
Extracurricular Participation and Attendance:
Extracurricular activities, such as the musical, athletics, and clubs, are opportunities for students to explore their interests and represent the school in a safe structured environment. This can be a delicate balance for students between finding time to do their school work versus finding the time to participate in those extracurricular activities. We urge students to get involved but we also want students to be aware that academics should always be the first priority. The Extracurricular handbook explains, in more detail, what additional expectations exist for students who try to participate in both. An electronic version of the handbook is available using the link below.
In an effort to provide clarity and specificity, conflicting information was shared at our Winter Sports Meeting. As a result PHCS Administration has generated points of emphasis below for different parts of the handbook that you and your student need to know to be eligible to participate in extracurricular activities and athletics.
Morning Attendance:
If students aren’t in school by 8:15 they will not be allowed to participate in afterschool extracurricular activities. In the handbook you will see that there are some allowable excused absences but all require documentation to be returned back to school. Parent hand written notes will not be accepted as excused absences for extracurricular activities.
Academic Eligibility:
Students are encouraged to stay after school if they are failing any subjects. Students involved in extracurricular activities/athletics must stay 10th period for extra help if they are failing 2 or more classes. Students will need to have a 10th period extracurricular pass signed by their 10th period teacher to be eligible to participate in extracurricular activities for that day. All teachers have extracurricular passes to provide students at the students request.
10th Period:
10th period is considered a component of the regular school day. Some students may leave at the end of 9th period and some students are required to stay depending on their individual programing. Students involved in extracurricular activities that take place immediately after school (3:15), and are in grades 7-9 must stay at school 10th period for academic support. This support can take place with a teacher or in the designated extracurricular study halls.
The Complete Extracurricular Handbook Is BELOW:
Contact An Administrator:
The main office determines and enforces all student eligibility requirements. If you have any questions about student eligibility or the application of the extracurricular rules and expectations please reach out to an administrator.
Any students involved in an extracurricular activity (this includes clubs) will be held to these requirements. To ensure that students and parents understand these expectations we ask that you acknowledge that through responding to this quick form.
Rooms Communication Platform:
While some teachers at the Elementary Level may continue to use: Class Dojo, Seesaw, Google Classroom, Remind; the expectation is "Rooms" will replace ALL of these platforms for the 2023-2024 school year.
In order to increase engagement we need to effectively communicate between home and school. If you have questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact teachers directly, if these concerns are not answered in a timely manner the next step would be to contact Mrs. Cruikshank then Mrs. Thomas.
