LITERACY WEEK
Mrs. Horsley, along with the staff and students of PKS, would like to extend a huge THANK YOU to everyone who helped make this year’s Celebrate Literacy Week such a success! A special shoot-out to CBT Construction and Native Construction for kicking off the week by welcoming our students with a real construction site experience. Thank you also to Eye Catcher Signs for providing the fantastic banners that added to the excitement! In addition, Mrs. Horsley would like to recognize Whitney Trentine, Karly Venezia, Judy Calzadilla, and Maria Rojas Acevedo for their countless hours of prepping supplies, constructing the brick wall, and helping to make this week truly special for our students. And finally, a big thank you to the entire Trentine family for their hard work in prepping supplies and creating the incredible eight-toolbox display! Let’s keep Building Literacy, One Book at a Time! 📚🚧💙
Among the many literacy activities this week, 8th graders paired with 2nd and 4th grade to read.
Coral Shores High Schools Students came over to read to Kindergarten and 1st graders.
The Gran Finale for Literacy week was the Vocabulary word Parade!!
PKS Band attended the All County Honors Band
PKS and KLS Basketball players and Cheerleaders at the last game of the season!
We are excited to announce that Junior Ranger Day will take place on Saturday, February 8, 2025! The fun-filled day will offer ranger-guided programs at both Shark Valley and Royal Palm (Anhinga Trail) and give children an opportunity to earn their very own Junior Ranger Badge at a special ceremony at 2:00 PM.
- Event: Junior Ranger Day 2025
- Date: Saturday, February 8, 2025
- Time: 8:30 AM - 2:00 PM
- Location: Shark Valley (36000 SW 8 Street, Miami, Florida 33194) AND Royal Palm / Anhinga Trail (40001 State Road 9336, Homestead, Florida 33034)
- Shark Valley will offer a free tram ride with paid park admission! Reservations required by calling 786-886-9990. Limited to 1 adult per child to allow maximum participation from other families.
- No reservations are required for any other Junior Ranger Day activities.
- Cost: Note that entrance fees still apply of $35/vehicle (card only - no cash); but 4th graders can get their family into the park for free if they bring a physical Every Kid Outdoors pass or voucher (MUST be printed, cannot be a copy on the phone). Learn more at Everykidoutdoors.gov.

STUDENT OF THE WEEK K-2
Griffin is an amazing student! He is always so kind to his peers. He loves to learn and always does his best. He is always so helpful and is a great role model for his class.

4th Grade Student of the Week (Ammy Dubon)
Ammy arrives at school each day with a positive attitude, ready to learn. She stays focused, completes her assignments on time, and always strives to do her best. Known for her friendly nature, Ammy is always willing to help her classmates and treats everyone with kindness and respect. Keep up the great work, Ammy!
MIDDLE SCHOOL HAPPENINGS
STUDENT OF THE WEEK 6-8
Sienna Cadogan is the Middle School PBIS student of the week. Sienna is always prepared for each day. She arrives to class with all of her work completed and ready to learn. Sienna is also very responsible and takes care of her supplies, completes her work and follows all of the classroom rules. Congratulations Sienna on a job well done.

7th Grade Field Trip
On March 5, 2025, the 7th Grade will take a field trip to see the Honorable Judge Sharon Hamilton at the Tavernier Courthouse? We will observe the criminal arraignment process.
Media Center/Readers are Leaders

Readers are Leaders
Readers are Leaders and Building Better Readers had a wonderful week full of books, friends, and fun. Many thanks to so many special Moms who helped us set up the activities for students. Mrs. Monica Horsley and the Literacy Committee, thanks for the great job.
Dr. Cash ended the week with 5th Grade Guest readers who read to Mrs. Sogegian’ s 1st grade students. These girls gave up their recess and practiced reading during the week to make sure they were ready and were super Role Models.
Kindergarten has a new reading challenge! Your child will receive a 3-layer snowman. As part of PKS Culture of Literacy “Make a Literacy Resolution” you can read 3 books with your student and fill out 1 Fiction, 1 Non-Fiction, and 1 Free Choice book. More information is coming from your Kindergarten Newsletter. We are looking forward to February’s Culture of Literacy – “Let’s Love Literacy.”
“Gung Hay Fat Choy” to you and yours from the Cantonese Lunar New Year that wishes you a Happy New Year. The first day of Chinese New Year was January 29th and is celebrated for 15 days. Students in 4th and 5th grade can earn a Chinese New Years pin when they read a chapter book on their independent reading level. As part of the challenge, I am pausing check out of graphic novels in order to update the shelves. Please encourage your students to continue to work on the Superintendent’s Remarkable Reader Award, see flyer.
