Message from Principal Collins
Hello Evergreen Families,
This week we did our iReady make-up testing. Our 7th graders are learning about the constitution. They know what the difference is between a right and a privilege. Next week, we start our second semester, report cards will go home on February 13th. Be sure to ask your child(ren) to see their report cards and talk about the academic growth they have made since the beginning of the school year. You can also view grades on ParentVue.
Our dedicated teachers and staff have been working diligently to design an engaging and inclusive curriculum that will foster a love for learning and inspire our students to reach their full potential. We will continue to provide opportunities for personal growth, support individual interests, and cultivate an inclusive community where all feel valued and welcomed. As teachers prepare for instruction each day, it is essential to think about how they will set the stage for learning. Through understanding the development of our students, teachers model the expected outcomes by providing direct instruction and clear expectations for the learning targets. Then, it is important that teachers provide students with guided practice. An essential component to any lesson is the evaluation/assessment of learning. After students have the opportunity to independently practice what they’ve been taught, our teachers closely assess their mastery to determine next steps (progress or pause) for their students’ learning. At Evergreen, following this cycle for a lesson exemplifies why our teachers consistently maximize student academic success!
We are getting ready for our 3rd sports seasons. Tryouts and practices will begin soon. Thank you for your support of our Grizzly Athletes. Remember sportsmanship is an expectation and each of us has a part to play in this role. Though you may disagree with an official’s call, there is no reason to berate the officials for what you perceive being an error in judgement. Officials are in short supply and this situation is not improving anytime soon. We can all do our part to ensure officials want to come back to Evergreen to officiate our contests. We can all do our part to make sure we all enjoy our sports.
Partnership between home and school is fundamental to the success of our students. We encourage families to stay actively involved in their child's education through open communication with teachers, attending school events, and participating in student led conferences. We value your input, feedback, and support as we collaborate to create a positive and enriching school experience for our students.
I am confident that this school year will continue to bring many memorable moments, achievements, and new discoveries. Together, let's embrace the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead and make this a truly remarkable year for each and every member of our school community.
Middle schoolers have a bigger role in learning-Middle school marks an important new phase in education. From this point on, students will be expected to take more responsibility for their own learning. Instead of being teacher-led, learning in the secondary years becomes student-led. To foster increased responsibility for learning, encourage your middle schooler to:
- Be assertive. Ask your child “What do you think you need to be successful this school year?” Ten, encourage your child to ask for it. Suggest your child get to know teachers so approaching them will feel more comfortable.
- Participate in class. Your child should ask questions and give opinions during class discussions.
- Get help at the first sign of a problem. Your middle schooler should find out when teachers are available for extra help.
- Work to get along with teachers and classmates. Everyone learns better in a pleasant environment.
- Take challenging classes. Your middle schooler shouldn’t just coast along. If classes seem easy, your child may not be in the right classes. Suggest talking to the school counselor about options.
- Think about learning. Instead of just memorizing information, your child should ask, “How does this topic relate to something I have learned or experienced before
I thank you for entrusting your child(ren) to us and for the sacrifices you make each day to send your child(ren) to Evergreen.

Attend High School Planning Nights between Feb. 4-12
Evergreen Grizzly eighth-grade families,
High School Planning Nights are coming up soon in February. By now, you should have received a special invite from high school principals inviting you to attend their High School Planning Night event the week of February 4-12. I encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity to learn about the various courses, clubs, and programs offered at the school.
This event will help eighth-grade scholars successfully navigate the transition to high school and ensure your child is ready to achieve success in high school and better prepare for college and career. Students and families can speak to current high school scholars and teachers to gain a better understanding of the high school experience.
While most Evergreen eighth-grade scholars will attend Thomas Jefferson High School, you are also welcome to explore other high schools in our district. Note: To attend a high school outside of your attendance area, you must apply for the Choice Enrollment.
Please plan to attend at least one High School Planning Night event to help your scholar prepare for high school.
