Second Grade Scientists!
What's happening in Second Grade Science?
September 5, 2013
I am excited to begin a learning adventure with your child in second grade! I believe in keeping close contact with families and will be sending newsletters throughout the school year to keep you updated on what your child is learning in each subject.
The second grade is beginning their first unit in science, which will be a scientific study of the states of matters. Students will be observing the properties of solids, liquids, and gases. Students will be expected to observe closely, ask questions, work with each other, and most importantly, to think like a scientist! These learning opportunities in science are a great way for students to begin to establish their own understanding of the natural world around them, even at a young age.
This unit will last about two weeks. We expect to be finishing the unit around September 20. After students have completed the unit, we will encourage families to visit our classroom to explore all the hard work students have done in science. More information about this will be sent home as the date gets closer.
Lastly, we need your help! Please encourage your students to look for examples of solids and liquids in your home. Talk about the differences with your students. For example, what observations do you notice when making Kool-aid or salad dressing at home? Can you find examples of different solids we use everyday in the kitchen?
If you have an extra materials at home that you would like to donate to the classroom, this would be greatly appreciated. For this particular unit, we could use:
- Paper or plastic cups
- Sugar and salt
- Zip-close bags
- Paper towel
Volunteers can be particularly useful in science because of the hands-on atmosphere. If any family members would like to volunteer in the classroom, please let me know. We have science on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2- 2:45. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
We are looking forward to beginning our exploration into the states of matter. We plan to learn many new things and also have fun! Please do not hesitate to let me know if there is any other way I can help your child succeed in science this year.
