South Middle School Newsletter

A Note from Mr. Barney
This week, we rotated unified arts classes, which means we are about 12 weeks, or a third into the school year. This week we had Tuesday off for election day, and next week we are off on Monday for Veterans Day. At this age, students do have strong feelings about the election. I noticed an uptick in negative comments associated with the the election that are a bit concerning. My aim is to encourage that we all respect the views of each other and work toward making things better for the whole, not the part. Yes, I am tasking middle school students to engage in more adult like behavior and I am asking parents to support that mission. I appreciate everyone's support of our work at South Middle School.
Next week we have another visit from Model Schools on Thursday, and we will be halfway through the second weeks reaching the interim mark on Friday, November 15. I encourage everyone to take a pause on Monday and honor our nation's veterans. If you are out and about and see someone who served, shake their hand and thank them for their service. I hope everyone has a great three day weekend.

What's Happening at South Middle?
The competition is on!
Student Leadership is hosting a PEP Rally on Friday, November the 22nd. Starting Tuesday, November 12, 2024, we will be collecting loose change, and each grade level will earn points toward the spirit stick that collects the most change. We will have a spirit week during the week of the PEP Rally from Monday, November 18th- Friday, November 22nd. The grade level team that earns the most points by participating in Spirit Week Activities, showing school spirit during the PEP Rally, and collecting change will win the Spirit Stick the day of the PEP Rally!!!
Student Leadership Elections
Members of Student Leadership will be campaigning for class president, vice president, treasurer, and secretary. Students are encouraged to look at the posters hanging in the cafeteria to see who is running and why they are running. On November 19th, all students will have the opportunity to cast their votes for their peers in their grade level.
