As we wrap up our Community Helpers unit this week, we’ve been busy practicing clapping out syllables in one- and two-syllable words. In math, we’ve focused on addition up to 5, using concrete objects to help visualize the concepts.
Looking ahead to February, our next unit will be From Farm to Table. We’ll explore the journey of food from the farm to our tables, while also diving into subtraction using hands-on activities and objects. We’re excited to celebrate the 100th day of school! Our celebration will include dressing up as if we’re 100 years old and making a fun 100th day snack. It’s sure to be a memorable day of learning and laughter!
A quick reminder: Please ensure your child has a coat for outdoor recess, as we want to keep everyone warm and comfortable!
Hello Parents/Guardians,
Kindergarten has started the 3rd 9 weeks strong! Thank you so much for continuing to work with your children at home. Please remember to work on sight words and reading every night. We appreciate your support. In February Kindergarten will be:
- Reading – Students continue to work on understanding “Why we like stories”. We are working on a variety of genres to include fairytales, fables, and poems. Students are learning about the characteristics of each of these genres. Together we are learning how to make inferences, compare and contrast similar stories, and will discuss rhyme and rhythm in nursery rhymes.
- Math – Soon we will be wrapping up our second visit to addition and subtraction within 10. Students have learned a variety of strategies to help them solve word problems and we have been working hard at learning how to explain our process for solving word problems. We will begin our topic on counting to 100 soon. Students will learn to count to 100, identify patterns within counting to 10 and make groups of 10 and count on to count big numbers.
- Science – Students are learning all about natural resources and practical ways to use rocks, soil, and water.
- Social Studies – Students have learned about customs and holidays and are now learning about maps and globes and how they aid in determining location. We will soon learn about words that can help us identify relative location such as under, right, left, etc.
While we are halfway through the 3rd 9 weeks there is still much to learn in Kindergarten. Again, we thank you for your support in making sure your child’s academics is priority and providing them that quality time of continuing the learning at home.
Our 1st Graders are quickly becoming 2nd Graders right before our eyes! Along with their growing, comes a field trip to the Mayborn Museum Complex! On February 14th, we will embark upon a field study of living and nonliving things to complement our upcoming Science unit. Please be on the lookout for permission slips in backpacks. Payments for the trip can be made via the school store. Simply scan the QR code on the slip and pay the entry fee before February 11th. The bottom portion of the permission slip is due by February 7th to ensure we have an accurate student count. The field-based learning study will take the majority of our day so we will not schedule any celebrations on that day. However, students are welcome to bring treats and cards to exchange upon our return to campus. We look forward to even more learning and growing together in 1st Grade!
Reading: students will learn to identify elements of drama such as setting, characters, dialogue, and plot. Social Studies: students learn geography, map skills, and physical characteristics of places. Science: students will understand how water m
Welcome back! Our second graders are returning from break with fresh energy and excitement, ready to dive into new lessons and tackle exciting challenges ahead! It’s always a joy to see them come back eager to learn and explore new concepts, and we’re thrilled for all the amazing things they’ll discover this nine weeks!
In science our second graders have been diving into the world of weather! They’ve been exploring how we measure temperature, rainfall, and wind speed using tools like thermometers, rain gauges, and anemometers. They will also be learning about extreme weather events like hurricanes, tornadoes, and blizzards.
In Social Studies students are developing skills in map reading and compass usage, as well as learning how to identify and locate specific areas on a map.
In math we have moved into the world of money! Students are learning how to identify and count half dollars, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies. We will soon be moving into even and odd, word problems, and fractions.
In reading, we will be learning about folktales. This includes fables, legends, and fairytales. Students will be reading, identifying the elements, and discuss the author’s purpose of each kind of folktale. In writing, students will be writing different types of poetry. Encourage your child to read nightly and discuss what they have read to check their comprehension.
Third grade continues to work hard. In February, we will complete our unit on Fractions and begin our study on Geometric Figures. Afterward, we'll enter measurements, including perimeter, area, capacity, weight, and time. In Reading and Language Arts, We'll end our unit with a Research Project: Be a Hero. When students enter the music room at Maude Moore Wood, they are entering a portal into the wide and diverse universe of cultures, traditions, and history. Our students are expanding their world cultural encounters while simultaneously gaining skills in teamwork, analysis, listening, and composing. From the stately grandeur of Sergei Prokofiev’s “Dance of the Knights” to the exciting rhythms of a Shona folk song from Zimbabwe called “Sorida,” and into learning based on the civil rights era song “We Shall Overcome,” our students are exploring a treasure trove of experiences and time periods. Our 1st and 2nd grade students are working on some special songs to perform at a public concert in March. Warrior Voices Choir is preparing for a special appearance at the annual KISD choral festival in April. More details to follow.
We are excited about the amazing things we have planned for our students in the PE program this year! Recently, we’ve been focusing on volleying activities and striking objects with short- and long-handled implements. Up next, we’ll start preparing for a very special event—PE Have a Ball Night!
PE Have a Ball Night is a fun-filled evening designed to encourage families to get active together. We’ll teach your children a variety of games and activities, so they can take the lead and show you how to play during the event. Mark your calendars—the event will take place on Thursday, February 13, 2025, right after the Black History Play presented by Ms. Sewell and her talented group of students.
- Black History Play: 4:15–4:45 PM in the cafeteria
- PE Have a Ball Night: 5:00–6:30 PM in various locations throughout the building
Please continue to encourage your children to wear proper athletic shoes so they can safely participate in all activities during PE. Your support makes a big difference in ensuring a safe and engaging environment for everyone.
We can’t wait to see you and your family at these exciting events! Thank you for your continued support.

Maude Moore Wood Warriors are challenged this month to be kind to others, even when it’s hard. Our character trait this month is “Spark the Heart”. Let’s set the example in our classrooms, in our school, and in our community of us leading the way to spreading kindness and compassion. We can accomplish this by writing self-love letters, creating affirmation boxes, and finding ways to be kind, intentionally. We appreciate our families participating by reading our Family Newsletter and sharing your thoughts with your student by using those meaningful conversation starters at the bottom. Our families at Maude Moore Wood are the BEST! This month our counseling topics include being respectful, kindness, and freedom from perfectionism. Random Acts of Kindness Day is February 17th.
