Mitosis & Meiosis Comparison
Differences between Mitosis & Meiosis
The Differences of What is Created
During meiosis only sex cells can form either female egg cells or male sperm cells. In mitosis everything else can be created except sex cells.
The Difference of Functions in Mitosis and Meiosis
The function of meiosis is to halve the number of chromosomes going into the sex cells. The function of mitosis is cellular reproduction and to grow and repair the cell.
The Difference in the Number of Chromosomes
The number of chromosomes in meiosis is half of what the original is because at fertilization the male and female sex cells will provide 1/2 of the chromosomes each- so the offspring has genes from both parents, while in mitosis the number of chromosomes stay the same once mitosis is over because if they didn't then you wouldn't have any stable cells, tissues, or organs in your body.

Events in Meiosis
Crossing Over
Crossing over only occurs in meiosis which is where the chromosomes can mix together, but it cannot occur during mitosis because homologous chromosomes do not pair up during mitosis.
What Type of Reproduction
Sexual reproduction happens during meiosis where two morphologically distinct types of specialized reproductive cells called gametes fuse together. Asexual reproduction happens during mitosis which is when offspring arise from a single organism and inherit genes of that parent only.
The Difference Of What It Occurs In
Mitosis can occur in any organism except viruses. Meiosis only occurs in animals, plants and fungi
