Please keep the James Family, and all those who have lost loved ones, in your thoughts and prayers at this time. We continue to pray for those in our community who are unwell or suffering at the moment.

Do you have a child at home who you are planning on starting at Marist School? We are currently taking enrolments for the remainder of this year and future years.

A friendly reminder even if you have a child already at the school, you need to enrol your younger children as soon as possible please.

Over the next few weeks you can expect to see Spotlight posts showing your child/ren working in a variety of curriculum areas. The children may be working individually, in pairs or collaboratively in a group situation.

If you have not set up your Spotlight App yet or have not been using it, please contact Beth in the office on b.lockie@marist.school.nz for your unique ID and instructions on setting up the app. We will be using this tool to share your child/rens progress and achievement throughout their schooling at Marist School. This will be supported with mid year Better Together Conversations and end of year reports.

After weeks of practising, Monday was our school Jumping June event when we stayed active skipping, jumping and having fun for a whole hour!

The House Captains and Student Council organised nine different stations from long rope, elastics, Jump Jam and skipping races, working our hearts hard to support The Heart Foundation. It made us reflect on the gift of health and showing gratitude for having a healthy heart that keeps us active.

Our generous Marist School community raised $9225.75 for The Heart Foundation and we’d like to say a HUGE thank you to you. It also provided a skipping rope for every child in the school so we can continue practising our skipping skills and having fun at playtime.

A reminder that children MUST order their prizes on their profile page over the long weekend as the close date for ordering them is Monday!!!

The Marist School Garden to Table Bake Sale was on Monday. There was so much food that it was two days long. It was so busy. All the year 5s worked really hard. Thank you to all the people who baked and supported our sale by buying baking.

The raffle for the delicious Chocolate Berry Cake made by our Kitchen Specialist Johanna was a huge success. The winning ticket was bought by Mr Rex! Well done Mr Rex.

We raised an incredible $1547.70!

Thank you everyone for helping. The money will be used to help run our Garden to Table programme.

We are pleased to let you know that, from this Saturday, Elizabeth Michael Uniforms (4 Bond St, Grey Lynn) will be selling a new Marist School Jacket. The jacket is warm and shower proof with a built-in hood. Perfect for this wet, cold weather!

This week we have been celebrating Matariki by doing different activities in our House groups!

In literacy in Hub 2 we are reading Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo. In Kensuke’s Kingdom the main character is Michael. Michael’s parents became redundant and decided to sail around the world. Michael has a sheepdog called Stella Artois. Michael and Stella accidentally fall off the boat and they don’t have a lifejacket or a safety harness.

Michael fights to stay afloat but he is growing tired. Finally he falls asleep. When Michael regained consciousness he found that he and Stella had washed up on an island. Michael looks around. When Michael woke up he found two bowls of water for him and Stella. There was also a plate of fruit and raw fish. Michael then knew that someone else was on the island. He started wandering around the island exploring the island and looking for the other person. Later, he got to the top of the island and noticed that it looked like a peanut.

He went back down to the beach and found a shipwreck and there was some glass which he could use to start a fire. He went to gather wood and dried leaves, he aligned the bottle with the sun and slowly but surely there was smoke then… A fire! He went to find wood for the fire. When he came back an old man was putting out the fire. He said his name was Kensuke “ NO FIRE! NO FIRE!” he shouted and dumped more sand onto the fire so it was completely out and by the time he left, the fire was just smoking and completely black. That night Michael couldn't get sleep because of the bloodsucking mosquitoes he was turning and itching all night.

A few weeks later Michael went back up to the hill and started building a beacon of wood and dry leaves so if he saw a ship he would light the fire. Later Michael wanted to have a swim, but as soon as he got in a voice boomed NO SWIM! UNDERSTAND NO SWIM! Now Michael was raging with fury he stamped across the line and jumped right into the water only to find the old man still shouting at him. Next came the pain - it was a jellyfish stinging him. He became unconscious and later he found himself in Kensuke’s cave. He was paralysed for a long while before he could finally move his body. Kensuke gave him porridge and a some fruit juice and some food as well. After he completely recovered he taught Kensuke to speak English.

On Tuesday Marist was in charge of running the Eden Albert Cross Country at the Auckland Domain. This is a huge undertaking and something that wouldn't be possible without the amazing support of our parent volunteers. Thank you so much to those who helped set up, marshall and man the PTFA sausage sizzle. A particular thank you to the Wynyard family for providing and setting up hoardings around the finish line - this made crowd control so much easier!

The Marist Cross Country Team, who represented our school at the event, ran hard and with fantastic spirit. A particular congratulations to the following runners who placed in the top 20 in their events:

William - 9th, Year 6 boys

Indie - 11th, Year 5 girls

Ava - 12th, Year 5 girls

Violet - 10th, Year 4 girls

Beatrice - 16th Year 4 girls

The sun came out, the Domain looked beautiful and everyone competing and watching agreed it was a brilliant day. You ran an amazing event Mrs Kluts! Thank you!

Knitting club is in full swing again and we have such enthusiastic knitters. Some of our original group from 2020 are still knitting up a storm. Check out the beautiful scarf Chiara has made for herself. She's going to wear it on her Queenstown holiday.

We couldn't do it without our fantastic helpers who help out when they can. A massive thank you to Barbara, Jude, Fiona, Bette, Diana, Jana, Miss Lulich and Mrs Young.

This week we were celebrating Matariki at Garden to Table. Watch our video here.

The children were busy harvesting silverbeet, spinach, broccoli, carrots and kale in the garden. They sorted out our overflowing compost bins, did some weeding and watering. They also planted strawberries.

In the kitchen, the children made pakipaki (Māori bread), hua whenua soup (vegetable soup) and kawakawa biscuits. The soup was very popular!

Hub 2 are enjoying learning how to make iMovies!

Netball is alive and well at Marist! This year we have 6 teams from Year 3 to Year 6 playing in the Windmill Rd mid week competition. Grading has been completed and it is full swing into the season. A very big thank you to Mrs Young for going along to support our players!

This year we are continuing with Marist Meals - a pastoral care initiative. These meals are provided to families in the school & parish community when a little extra support is needed (e.g. a new baby, sickness, bereavement). With the impact of covid and many of our school and parish families isolating or unwell, it would be great if we could fill up the freezer so we can help lighten the load for families during these challenging times.

If you would like to contribute, we welcome any homemade, brought meals or baking for our freezer. Meals can be dropped off to the school office.

St Mary's Parish Foodbank is feeding nearly 2000 a month. PLEASE remember them when you are shopping - they are in desperate need of donations! Anything you can contribute will be very much appreciated.

There is a box on the front porch of the presbytery.

On 2 July, Raechelle Taulu, Marist College Principal, will be making a splash in the ‘Iceberg’ 2km ocean swim to raise funds for St Patrick’s Cathedral.
The Cathedral is open and has a bright future but financially, the last two years have been challenging.

St Mary’s Parish, along with Fr Carlo, are holding a training for all new and existing Altar Servers as it has been a very long time since they last served. If you have had your Sacraments and would like to join this Ministry, we would love to see you at the training on Sunday the 3rd July at 11am.
