School Pictures This Week: Tuesday and Wednesday
A Message From Mrs. O'Shaughnessy
I hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend. The weather makes it hard to believe that it is Fall, but we are indeed nearing the end of October! Enjoy it while we can.
This past week, I had the opportunity to have two wonderful parent meetings with our Grade 5 families. Our grade 5 students are nearing the end of their educational journey at PS 88q, and are applying for middle school. It was wonderful to have the opportunity to discuss all the options and opportunities with our families this week. I can honestly say that spending time in the classroom and spending time with the families are two of my favorite things about my role as principal. I saw a great quote this week that said "Teach like it's your child in the front row." As a teacher, and now a leader, knowing that as a mother, what I would expect from a school keeps me focused, and time spent in the classroom and with families keeps me connected to what is needed. Please, always reach out to me with any questions, concerns, ideas..anything!
This week we have another packed week. School pictures, the NYPD Jazz Band Performance, Literacy Partners Workshop, Coffee With Ms. O'Shaughnessy and Title I Meeting, and our Caring Closet (Saturday).
Have a great week!
This week we wore pink for Breast Cancer Awareness, Purple for Domestic Violence Awareness and of course , showed our NY Pride for our sports teams!! Check it out!
This Week In Pictures
Morning Arrivals
How you start your day is so important! I know how stressful it could be to get out the door in the morning. We are so happy to open our doors early each morning, at 7:30am for all of our students. This also gives us the opportunity to see our families each day....and have some fun! From 7:30am to 8:03am every morning, we make it a party! The morning crew, Ms. Laurie, Ms. Nikki, Mr. Anthony, Mr. Hess, Ms. Lowe, Ms. Herman and me ( the one with the old school bell 😂) want drop off to be AWESOME! Music, dancing and off course hugs start our day. Friday, even Grimace joined us! Don't be late, come each day, and you never know who may show up!
Breaking Bread Event @ PS 88Q
The Social Justice Committee has organized a school-wide initiative in honor of Native American Heritage during the month of November.
Teachers will read the book Fry Bread: A Native American Family Story by Kevin Noble Maillard and use it as the springboard for their month’s work. The book centers around the theme of family and the role of bread in the Native American tradition.
We would like to create a Fall 2024 edition of the PS 88 Bread Cookbook. You may send in a recipe for a type of bread commonly eaten in your home (cheese bread, pita bread, naan, etc.). The recipe should include the student’s name and class, country of origin, ingredients, and instructions on how to make the bread. The submissions will then be put together to create a PS 88 recipe book.
Please submit your recipe by Tuesday, November 5th, 2024 to your child’s teacher or you may email Ms. Roldan (croldan5@schools.nyc.gov). Thank you for your support.

From Our New Chancellor
October 16, 2024
My Commitment to You
Dear Families,
I am honored and excited to be your new Chancellor. As a lifelong educator and mom of a New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) student, I am eager to work with and serve you.
When I was a child growing up in the Bronx, my mother taught me that education was the ticket to a life of prosperity and fulfillment. I decided to become a teacher in 2007 because I, like my mother, believe in the power of education to change lives.
I began my career in the classroom at Harry S. Truman High School and went on to become an administrator at both the school and district levels. As chief of staff to former Chancellor Banks, I spearheaded Project Open Arms, a multi-agency effort to welcome and support our 45,000-plus newest New Yorkers. In my most recent role, I served as the Deputy Chancellor of Family and Community Engagement and External Affairs, fostering partnerships between families, schools, and communities.
I know this school system inside and out—and with each passing year, I grow even more amazed at the talent of our staff, the innovation in our classrooms, the dedication of our families and parent leaders, and the brilliance of our students. To become the next Chancellor is the culmination of my life’s work.
I want to thank Mayor Adams for this opportunity and Chancellor Banks for his immense contributions to our school system. The initiatives we’ve launched—from NYC Reads to our reimagined Student Pathways—have been truly transformative, and I am eager to continue these programs. Please know that I am committed to stability and consistency in the day-to-day operation of our schools.
As an NYCPS parent myself, I will work my hardest to ensure our schools are safe and welcoming spaces for our children, that they set a high academic bar, and that they provide rich opportunities for learning and growth. I commit to advocating for each of our children just as I would for my own daughter. And I commit to listening to the wisdom of our families and ensuring we are doing our part as an agency to communicate clearly and often.
I’m excited to continue building bright starts and bold futures for the children of our city, and I look forward to all that we will achieve together. Thank you for choosing New York City Public Schools for your children.
In partnership,
Melissa Aviles-Ramos, Chancellor
