Be sure to talk with your Lions each night about what standards they are working on and what activities they are doing to master those standards! Here is some general information to get the conversation started.
In Math, students use the Open Up curriculum. Click here to see the Open Up lessons for all grade levels! Click here to see the Math 1 Open Up lessons. 6th graders are working on fractions; 7th graders are practicing with expressions, equations, and inequalities; and 8th grade working on functions and volume.
In ELA, students are finishing up their second set of book studies. This unit they are reading informational texts. 6th grade is reading The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, 7th grade is reading Patient Zero, and 8th grade is reading Omnivore's Dilemma. Stay tuned for the research podcasts from our 7th graders!
In Social Studies, 6th graders are learning about the ancient Greeks, 7th grade is learning about WWI, and 8th grade is exploring the industrial revolution.
In Science, 6th graders are working on waves, 7th graders are learning about weather or genetics, and 8th graders are learning about ecosystems.
Day At The Farm 8th Grade Field Trip 👩🏽🌾
What a HUGE success!! Thursday our 8th grade classes attended a field trip at the A&T farm.
Students had the opportunity to participate in educational sessions that focused on the 8th grade curricumlum from all subjects. ELA is reading the Omnivore's Dilemma focusing on the food cycle, Science is working on ecosystems, and Social Studies is working on conflict and cooperation in North Carolina, while Math across all we do is a necessity.
It was a day of learning for students and adults. Take a look at the photos below of some of the great things our students had the pleasure of participating in.
Arrival
Q&A
Students learned lots of great information and had the opportunity to engage by sharing their knowledge gained during the question and answer session.
The Animal Unit
Students attended sessions learning about livestock and how we benefit from animals each day.
The Taste Test
Every student was given a tray that contained foods that were made locally, naturally and or processed. Students had to identify which one was the healthiest form and how we as consumers have to make these choices every meal. They had chips, cheeses, pickles, soda and crackers.
The Taste Test
Students had to track their choices throughout the tasting and share it with their peers.
The Taste Test
Mr. Stewart
From the A&T library shared the history of how the A&T farm came about and the impact it had on Greensboro community.
Mr. Stewart
Shared artifacts from the A&T library with our students.
Dr. Melvin C. Swann
Mr. Stewart shared an artifact about our very own Dr. Melvin C. Swann and his contributions to the development and history of the A&T farm.
Thank you to our parents who volunteered & made this trip even better!! 🤗
Thank You A&T! 🤩🤩
🎉🎉CONGRATUALTIONS!!! To our Battle of the Books team for placing 2nd in the county and moving on to the next round!! Way To Go Ms.Shirk! Go Lions!!
Math Moments
6th Grade
In 6th grade, students are putting fractions to work in real-life situations. See if they can apply that knowledge to this scenario. To give their animals essential minerals and nutrients, farmers and ranchers often have a block of salt—called “salt lick”—available for their animals to lick. A rancher is ordering a box of cube-shaped salt licks. The edge lengths of each salt lick are 5/12 foot. Is the volume of one salt lick greater or less than 1 cubic foot? Explain your reasoning.
7th Grade
In 7th grade, students are learning about expressions, equations, and inequalities. See if they can apply the concepts to these scenario. Here are two stories:
1. A family buys 6 tickets to a show. They also each spend $3 on a snack. They spend $24 on the show.
2. Diego has 24 ounces of juice. He pours equal amounts for each of his 3 friends, and then adds 6 more ounces for each.
Look at the two equations to the right. Which equation represents which story? What does X represent in each equation? Find the solution to each equation. Explain or show your reasoning. What does each solution tell you about its situation?
8th Grade
In 8th grade, students are learning about functions. See if they can apply their learning to this scenario. Two cars drive on the same highway in the same direction. The graphs show the distance, D, of each one as a function of time, T. Which car drives faster? Explain how you know.

Character Trait of the Month
In February, students will be talking about PERSEVERANCE in their Friday SEL lessons. Watch this video about perseverance with your student: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eY-SCapwK3g. What does it mean to have grit? What was a time in your life when you showed perseverance? Share that experience with your student. Let them share an example with you?
