April Student of the Month
Each month the staff nominates and then votes on a student to win the Student of the Month award. For the April Student of the Month Award the winner is 11th grader Surya Raja Amudhan!
Here are some of the things the staff had to say about Surya:
- Not only a dedicated student, Surya is our Car Club President. Surya and a group of friends created the club this academic year 2023-2024. Surya makes weekly correspondence with club members, which can equate to 15 to 30 students in my classroom on a Monday afternoon. Over the year, Surya has created trivia games, presentations on car types, and most recently coordinated a car show. The time and effort that Surya was able to orchestrate from others in the club and himself demonstrated a level of leadership that is rarely taken by high schoolers. In order to execute the car show, Surya reached out to the police department, fire department, district facilities management, and local board of health. He had personal meetings with each department, dragging me along to some as the token advisor, and fulfilled every expectation that was requested to make the event happen. The Hop News article offers a great synopsis of a multi-million dollar sample of cars that the high school displayed on April 27th. While maintaining all academic expectations, Surya has been a captain to a group of students, an event coordinator, and a community advocate. As a teacher, it is tough to teach a student the life lessons that Surya was able to experience by simply following his passion. Most importantly, Surya is happy to share this experience with others and encourage others to join him all along the way.
- Surya is a self-starter who has taken his passions and put them into action.
If you see Surya, please congratulate him on this award! Thank you to the HPTO and ReMax for sponsoring this award!

Civics Project
Students Solving Plastic Waste
Ocean pollution and plastic waste are major issues in our society. But, not many people know about the dangers of ocean pollution. Soon enough, the plastic in our oceans will outweigh all of the fish. Almost 100,000 animals such as fish, turtles, and even birds die each year from eating or becoming entangled in plastics.
Around 80% of ocean trash is from land activity, such as garbage disposal, littering, and food industries; while only 20% is from fishing and water-based activities. We need to stop using single-use plastics (that do not break down for thousands of years) and start switching to reusable materials.
Read more at oceana.org/takeaction and find out how you can help our plastic problem!

Senior Photo Products
Class of 2024 Parents - it's time to celebrate our seniors! Back by popular demand are the door banners with your soon-to-be graduate's photo along with car banners for the June 1st parade and, of course, yard signs. For the car parade, it's fun to have the HHS car banner celebrating this year's graduation on one side of the car, and on the other side of the car, your child's logo for wherever their Fall plans take them. These are multi-use products that look fantastic in dorm rooms and at graduation parties. Also, these products are made next door in Ashland so there's no shipping charges.
